Subject: Do you think The Smiths?
Personally i think they're the best band ever, nevermind just in the '80's. My favourite album is 'The Queen is Dead' and my favourite song is 'There is a light that never goes out'. ;D ;D

Ok, i just checked out that other thread. Good to see there's loads of Smiths fans on here.
Have to disagree with you about 'Golden Lights' and esp. 'Meat is Murder' as i think they're both great songs. ;D

You can't honestly say 'Golden Lights' is a great song!! I know why people like Meat Is Murder - it's just personally not their greatest song for me.

No way!! You never said that you didn't like 'This Charming Man' - I adore that song!! :)

Ok maybe 'great' is too strong a word to describe 'Golden Lights'. I do think it's very charming though.
Oh and Ghost, how can you not like 'This charming man'. It's sublime. ???

I know, but I never got into those two tunes. I'm amazed you don't like "Meat Is Murder." It's a great song. "This Charming Man" just doesn't sound like their standard fare to me. I don't know why it's such a popular tune among his fans, but then you gasped and you were shocked to find out I think "Oscillate Wildly" is one of their best songs :P

Yes I was shocked. Only beacuse its an instrumental and to me, the Smiths music is nothing without Morrisseys lyrics. :)

Well, yeah. The Smiths were a band and Morrissey was a major part of the band and that's the thing: He was part of the band, not the whole band. Notice how his subsequent solo albums never managed to recapture the same tone and feeling that Smiths albums did back in the day. The only solo album I can see as being up to par with The Smiths is Viva Hate and that's because he was fresh out of the band and had Vini Reilly on guitars (a guitar maestro who can match Johnny Marr's talent).
Indeed, "Oscillate Wildly," to me, demonstrates that the whole is worth more than the sum of the separate parts. Lyrics were a part of the formula. It is an excellent tune, but then I don't know if you're into solo instrumental artists like Joe Satriani and... Vini Reilly :D !

True. The Smiths would not have been The Smiths without Johnny Marr's musical talent (and err, the other 'not so memorable' two ;D). Some guitar pieces in the songs are just fanatstic and so memorable.
So why don't you like 'This Charming Man'?

The one song I don't like and will definitely skip is "Hand In Glove" and it's because of the harmonica. I have nothing against the harmonica - Tom Petty, Neil Young, and even Blues Traveler use it extensively and very well, I might add, but it doesn't sound good in that song. It's very distracting and kind of grating. I'd rather hear the accordion or no harmonica at all :P
"This Charming Man," I can listen to, but it ranks near bottom. I don't really like the lyrics and it's too... "jumpy" and "upbeat" and sort of "optimistic." That's just the impression I get. I haven't listened to the song in ages! I made three CDRs compiling all the songs I like and I left that song out. Those CDRs are what I carry with me everywhere: To school, to work, to shop, to the beach, etc. and "This Charming Man" is safely tucked away in a storage room ::)

Hand in Glove isn't one of my favourites, but This Charming Man is. I guess I like its 'upbeat-ness'. So much of their stuff is way above average, and that's why I like them so much.
Now - I constantly listen to Hand That Rocks The Cradle and
Never Had No-One Ever. A phase which will soon change and I will listen to others more in the future :)
