Subject: female 80's artist

Written By: Whovian on 03/03/03 at 09:33 p.m.

I just heard a song on the radio today that I thought was named, "Faded Like a Rose." That phrase is part of the lyrics and that's what I thought it's name was but I couldn't find it anywhere. The band had a female singer. If anyone can help me find it, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

That would be Roxette's "Fading Like a Flower (Every Time You Leave)" from their 1990 "Joyride" album. It's also on their greatest hits collection "Don't Bore Us - Get to the Chorus!" Hope this helps you out.

BEAST: "Look, Belle, I don't mind you singing in the castle...as long as you don't sing 'Fading Like A Flower'!". :)

Wow that was quick :) Thanks a lot. That was going to bug me until I found out the name and artist. I used to have that cd until I had them stolen from my car in 1996. Thanks again for the help.

I have to ask...If you had the CD, why didn't you know the name of the song or artist?

I had about 40 cd's stolen and it was one that was passed down to me and I really liked it. Basically, it's been a long time since I heard the song and I remembered that it was one in the group of CD's that were stolen. This happens to me all the time, I'll hear a song on the radio and then it jogs my memory, "Yeah, I used to have that one."

Is is true that the lead singer from Roxette didn't speak any English (I think they were Swedish or Norwegian), and sung all of those songs phonetically?  I heard that somewhere.  If so, she did a great job!

They are Swedish - and like all Swedes they learned English in school.
They released many albums in Swedish before breaking out into the UK charts in 1988 with English versions of their songs.  I have the original Swedish version of The Look and its much funkier than the English version.

I have had a swedish penpal for more than 20 years and she has always sent me tapes every year of the latest music each year and I have done the same with Aussie music for her.

Per Gessle - the male half of Roxette - was in a huge 80's band before he and Marie created Roxette called Guyllene Tider.  I would say they had a following similar in size to Police or Duran Duran.  They were massive.  Then they broke up.  In the mid 90's they reformed for one tour only and toured Sweden to crowds of 60,000 or more.  My penpal sent me a doco she taped off tv about the reunion tour.  The build up and excitement and crowds was the equivilent of a Beatles reunion anywhere else !!

Just for the record, Roxette had actually recorded several albums in English long before their U.S. & U.K. breakthrough in the Spring of '89 w/ "The Look", and their then-current album, Look Sharp!. In fact, their first U.S. release was an overlooked 6-song EP, titled Heartland, sung completely in English, and released all the way back in '84! (I have it myself on cassette.) An excellent full-length album, Pearls of Passion (also in English), followed in '86, although it wasn't released here in the States. Both are well worth tracking down...

Don't hold me to this but I believe "Pearls of Passion" was re-released years ago just about everywhere in the world but the U.S. I was lucky enough to have a friend going to the UK at the time of re-release. It really is worth the time and trouble to find.

I didn't know about "Heartland" though! Great. More money spent at some point and just one more thing to hunt down on an ever-growing list.

Yes, the album was finally re-issued on CD in the mid '90s, but sadly, was only available here in the U.S. as an import. In the early '90s - a few years before that re-issue - I'd found a used copy of the original 1986 release on cassette that had somehow made its way here across the Big Pond (from their native Sweden, actually). At that time, hardly anybody here in the States even knew the album existed, and it was nearly impossible to find (in any format). And as I indicated in my previous post, it certainly was worth the three or four bucks that I paid for it... :-)

The re-release was certainly worth the cash. The extra mixes and bonus cuts alone were phenomenal.
