Just caught this thread from the depths of...

on 22nd September 1979 Buggles had a chart hit with Video Killed The Radio Star, which hit number 1.

on 26th January 1980 Buggles had a chart hit with The Plastic Age, which hit number 16.

on 5th April 1980 Buggles scraped in with Clean Clean which hit number 38.

What makes this song an 80's icon is the fact that it was made into a video and used to blast off MTV - Music Television.

It was the first video aired on MTV.  :)

Both Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes were brief members of YES... Trevor Horn is best known for his production skills (Seal, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Tina Turner, Sting) and his advant Garde group Art of Noise ("Close to the Edit", "Theme From Peter Gunn", etc.).  Rumor has it that he is working with Genesis, sans Mr. Collins.

Geoff Downes was a founding member of ASIA and still tours & records with ASIA.  He has also worked a lot with Max Bacon, whom you may remember, was the vocalist for GTR.

Totally, you happen to have mentioned two of my favourite artists there with George Michael (both his early and later stuff) and Billy Ocean (especially his famous stuff). Methinks, however, that they qualify as solo artists in the same way as John, Paul, George and Ringo also would, as opposed to the complete unit.

The reason for the Second British Invasion in the 80s was due to MTV. In the early 1980s, very few American bands had videos but the British bands had them. When MTV first aired, they needed videos-the more the better, so they got them from the British bands because they had them. The American audience heard this music and rushed to buy the albums. So we can all thank MTV for introducing us to wonderful groups like Duran Duran, U2, and so many others.

Just a quick note to point out that Video Killed The Radio Star has most recently been covered by Erasure on their latest album (called Other People's Songs, if you wanna pick it up).

The oddity is, the singer for Erasure, Andy Bell, didn't want to sing the song, so they used...a Macintosh to do the vocals.  No, I'm not kidding.  Yes, it's weird, but cool as well.

You need to get your hands on a copy of the paperback book titled The Rolling Stone Book of Rock Video by Michael Shore, which I have myself. Released here in the U.S. in 1984 by Rolling Stone Press/Quill. 320 pages. Frankly, you could easily get all the info you need for your project from that book alone! Unfortunately, it's long out-of-print, but you may get lucky at your local public library...

They did have another song which made (just) the charts soon after VKTRS. Apart from the fact that it was utterly tuneless and quickly disappeared from the top 30 without trace (as did the band for ever) I can't remember the title or tune however, it was that bad! However I am fairly certain that "Buggles" were'nt a REAL band but a couple of producers who put out what was initially expected to be a one hit wonder to show off their use of 1970's electro-pop.

Living In A Box, the group consisting of Andrew Crichlow, Richard Darbyshire and Marcus Vere, from the UK, apparently only had one top 40 hit in America, that of Living In A Box.

Their initial release was called Living In A Box, from 1987, followed up by Gatecrashing in 1989.

Indeed, their single peaks in Britain read as follows:

4 Apr '87 Living In A Box - Living In A Box 5
13 Jun '87 Living In A Box - Scales Of Justice 30
26 Sept '87 Living In A Box/Bobby Womack - So The Story Goes 34
18 Feb '89 Living In A Box - Blow The House Down 10
10 June '89 Living In A Box - Gatecrashing 36

Today I heard this nice song "The boys of summer" on a local radio station but I could not catch the artist's name. Does anybody know who the singer is? ??? I am quite sure by the sound of it that it's an eighties song.

And there was a recent (like last 6 months) remake of "Boys Of Summer" in dance style, with the video featuring two girls, for some reason...

Recently heard a nice 80's song titled "Love of the common people" on a local classics radio station. Does anyone know the name of the artist? ??? ??? ???

DJ Sammy recently recorded Boys Of Summer. A fine feel-good track, whoever sings it.

Paul Young recorded Love Of The Common People first, I believe. Amongst others who have recorded it, though, the Everly Brothers.

Uh... your timeline doesn't support that statement.   ???
The song was written by John Hurley & Ronnie Wilkins circa. 1966 (You may be familiar with their work "Son of a Preacher Man").  The Everly Brothers did record it in 1968.  It has been covered by Elton John, Paul Young, and the Indigo Girls, amongst others.

Thanks a lot for the info.. Wow! I didn't know that this song had such a history behind it. Anyways did Paul Young ever appear in a television series? someone told me that he did appear in a British TV series back in the mid 80's. Is it true?
