Subject: 80s Covers

Written By: Criz on 02/10/03 at 01:50 p.m.

Not 80s songs that have been covers, but 80s hits that were covers to begin with!

There are many that spring to mind:

Pet Shop Boys - Always On My Mind (Elvis)
Kim Wilde - You Keep Me Hangin' On (Supremes)
Soft Cell - Tainted Love (Gloria Jones)
Phil Collins - You Can't Hurry Love (Supremes)
Roxy Music - Jealous Guy (John Lennon)
Bangles - Hazy Shade Of Winter (Simon and Garfunkel)
Communards - Don't Leave Me This Way (Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes)
Bananarama - Venus (Shocking Blue)

...I can't have exausted them yet, can I? :)

Lay Lady Lay"by the Everly Brothers. It's on the EB 84 album. The reason they didn't record it in the 60s is because they thought the line,as sung by Dylan,"Lay across my big brass bed."was "Lay across my big breasts,babe>>.."Intelligibilkity was never one of Dylan's streong points.Cheers!

Actually, this was a solo by Midge Ure (was lead singer in Ultravox) and it was the B-side to his hit "If I Was", which went to no.1 in the UK for one whole week in 1985!  But you're right about it being an excellent cover though :-)

On the same subject, Midge Ure's 1982 cover of "No Regrets" (orginally by the Isley Brothers) was pretty awesome as well - and still is, cos he played it at a gig I went to on Monday night!

Not sure if the Soft Cell cover of "Tainted Love" is better than Gloria Jones' - I like both of them!
