Subject: What are the most definitive songs of the 80s?

Written By: Criz on 02/10/03 at 12:28 a.m.

I think everyone should give their opinions and then maybe we can narrow it down to say 10 at the most?

My votes go towards 'Don't You Want Me' by The Human League, Soft Cells version of 'Tainted Love' and 'Blue Monday by New Order.

Note: Even though the songs are great, "definitive" can also tend to draw into 'overplayed' at parties ;D

Good topic. An 80s sound of the early years in particular had to be heavily synth-driven.

Electricity by OMD

Quiet Life by Japan

hmm tough call.

Too Shy - Kajagoogoo
Photograph - Def Leppoard
Dont you forget about me - Simple Minds
I cant go for that - Hall & Oats

these incluse all the hit genres of the 80s. The synthpop, hard rock, regular pop/rock, and the slow love songs.

Some alternates can sum up the 80s. They weren successful due to that they sounded like the 80s:
Praying to the beat - Re-Flex, Sit Down and shut up - Kaja, Tricks - Gary Numan.

cheers,
Frayo

Even though these 3 songs were released in 1979, I think they pretty sum can define the 80s:

M - Pop Muzik
Buggles - Video Killed The Radio Star
Gary Numan - Cars

All of the above songs are great....and I could add multiple songs to the list as well, but no "quintessential song of the 80's" list is even valid if "Melt With You" by Modern English isn't on it.

Those are some great songs from the 80's, one that I would like to add is "Da, Da, Da"  I don't remember who did it but it was in that '83 flick "Private School" with Mathew Modine.
Maybe one of you folks can help me out with the band. :)

Don't you want me by The Human League is what I would call the definitive song, as it's instantly recognisable, seemingly internationally, as a quintessential 80's tune.

I thought I wouldn't choose a Smiths song for my first 3 - as I don't want to be *too* predictable ;D

Yet, if I had to choose, 'This Charming Man' would be on me 'definitive' 80s list :)

I would probably have to say, "867-5309/Jenny" by Tommy Tutone. I think that song had a great impact on the decade. (It deffinately made hell for the phone company  ;))

Destination Unknown - can't think of the group/artist that did that

Who Could It Be Now?
It's a Mistake               - Men at Work

Thriller - Michael Jackson

Rio - Duran Duran

One Thing Leads to Another - The Fixx

Don't You Forget About Me - Simple Minds

Our House - Madness

Whip It - Devo

Der Kommissar - After the Fire

Do You Hear Me? - (don't know) - but my favorite line is "I think I'll dye my hair blue."

Destination unknown is from Marietta, for the movie "Top Gun"

Der Kommissar - After the Fire

"Der Kommissar" is a song from Falco, and "After the Fire" was an instrumental song made by a group called 1980-F

Oliver is right though too, there is a song by that name on the Top Gun soundtrack.  All these years I thought Kenny Loggins and Berlin had a monopoly on that album. ;D

Getting back to Missing Persons though for a sec, that Dale Bozzio chick sure was something back the the early 80s. 8)  Words is a great song too.
