Subject: Weather in the 80s

Doesn't it seem like winters were much colder and lasted longer in the 1980s? Just another reason the 80s were great!

well that all depends on which part of the world your in. I'm orginally from arkansas. I thought it got cold there till i moved north to Illinois where im at now. I've never seen this much snow in my life! It's snowed at least once a week and its snowin now. eek!! But as far as back in the 80's back home our winters only lasted about 4 months and it seems the same.

I remember having to deliver newspapers in the early part of the 1980's and one day we had double-digit subzero cold.  I had a lot of clothes on and I was burning up in the truck, so I opened the window, and the driver told me to roll it back up!  It was so cold the snot froze in your nose!  That was disgusting!

so you're saying you enjoy long and cold winters?

Anyway, I remember winters when I was younger that were occasionally warm and dry, and others that were cold and wet.  Just like they are now.

I wouldn't know...I lived in Florida.

How about the hurricanes? Hurricane Hugo, Gloria, Elena, Alicia? Anyone have any stories on any of them?

During the 80s, when I was in Florida, only one hurricane threatened my town...Hurricane Floyd in 1987 (not to be confused with the Floyd of 1999). I was in fourth grade, and believe me, it was so surreal. At 8 AM, there was no sun out....it was dark as midnight. We were in school for half the day, just watching the local news. Then I went home to go shopping with my mother at Publix...it was mobbed and most of the shelves were empty. Then the storm came...it passed well south of us, and it wasn't a strong storm at all (only a category one hurricane). But that storm really made me interested in the weather...and that is why I am going to graduate school in the fall to study meteorology.

I thought winters were better in the 80s because we actually had snow. This year we only had snow for like 2 months February and March really. I live in Wisconsin by the way. Two weeks ago we had temperatures in the upper 80s and then the next day is snowed. I wish we still had winter wonderlands.
