I love hair metal. I think it is some of the best music ever writen. I have so many great memories of hanging out with friends while some Poison or Whitesnake or GNR was playing on the radio. Those were the best times, I was young and free and loved life to the fullest.
By the way, Dee Snider, the lead singer of Twisted Sister has a program on VH1 where he counts down the top 50 hair bands of all time. There are some one hit wonders there too. Great show to remember some songs you may have forgotten about.
We should all get together to make a list of all the Hair Metal bands and have a ranking. If we do that, maybe we can convince the site owner to put it on the wesbite inthe80s.com. Just like that show on VH1 reminded me of some good songs, I bet a list like that would get just about all the groups. One example of a hair band which is not well known would be MSG with their hit "***". Dang, what was there hit?

Poison recorded "some of the best music ever written"? ??? Hmmm...

Yep, back when Snider's countdown first aired a couple of years ago, I wrote down the artists (and the video clips featured), and posted the complete list here. But that was back in the days of the old board...

Depends on which version of the band you're referring to. If you mean the early days when they were known as the "Michael Schenker Group" (pre-"hair metal"), then they never really had any radio hits. In fact, the closest they came was "Rock My Nights Away", a minor AOR hit in the Winter of '84. But if you mean the "McAuley Schenker Group", then your answer is "Anytime", from the Winter of '90, which was at the height of the "hair metal" era. Personally, I preferred the minor hits "Gimme Your Love" and "Love is Not a Game", from their 1987 album, Perfect Timing...

The MSG song was a metal song. I remember some of the lyrics:
In my dreams,
Your still the same.
Your love is strong,
It still remains.
In my dreams,
Your still with me.
Just the way,
It ought to be.
Heck, maybe the title is "In my Dreams". It was released in the very late 80's I think. Great song. I dedicated this song to a girl I dated in High School. Now what was that girls name?? ;D

Poison would not be in my top 25 hair bands list. I just mentioned them because they were played so much on the radio. I wish the genre of Hair Metal was still as strong as it was in the 80's.
Subject: Re: Hair metal, anyone?
I loved 80's "Hair Metal"!!! I still enjoy listening to it. Those bands had the BEST ballad songs! I met Jani Lane from Warrant in Las Vegas a couple of years ago. He was staying in the room next to mine at the MGM and my friends and I actually hung out at the pool with he & his wife and son. He was so nice & we talked about how much music had changed from the 80's and how carefree everyone was back them (maybe a little TOO carefree). Anyway, he was a great guy and even though I wasn't a huge Warrant fan back in the days, I was glad to have met someone from that genre of music.

Yes, the song you're thinking of is indeed titled "In My Dreams". It was a minor hit here in the U.S. in the Winter of '86. But it was by Dokken, not MSG, lol. It was off the group's 1985 album, Under Lock and Key...
And BTW, Dokken had plenty of other hits, including "Breaking the Chains" (1983), "Into the Fire" (1984), "Alone Again" (1985), "Dream Warriors" (1987), and "Burning Like a Flame" (1988 ). Four of their albums have also been certified gold or platinum here in the U.S. So to say they were "not well known" is hardly the case. I've always liked 'em myself... :-)

Frankly, I don't miss most of the pretty-boy "hair metal" bands of the late '80s/early '90s. Personally, I'll take the "real" metal groups of the early to mid '80s, when it was more about the music than the looks... :P

You are right! It is Dokken, how could I have been wrong? Now it is gonna bug me, I can not remember the song by MSG. It was on a dark blue cd, and the song was #3 or 4. It was a very romantic song. It had something to do with leavinga chick or not leaving a chick.
I found another gem today. Firehouse "Don't Treat me Bad".
I am glad this topic started. I am tracking down some good songs. I wonder if there is a site which lists the top 100 songs of each year by radioplay for free (I think Billboard requires $$).

Sorry, not enough info to go on...

Okay, I'll give you that one - always liked that song myself. But I certainly don't consider them "heavy metal" - a pretty-boy "hair band", yes...

At this time, I don't know of any web sites that list that info for free, but I do have a book that ranks all the hits that made the pop chart by year, as well as a book that lists AOR (read: hard rock/heavy metal/hair metal) hits by artist... :-)
Subject: Re: Hair metal, anyone?
The name of the MSG song is "When I'm Gone". I finally found it.
Subject: Re: Hair metal, anyone?
Back in November my girlfriend and I went to a 80's metal night, and it was the best night out I've had out in ages!

Then keep rockin!! I am making a few cd's of my favorite metal. The music sounds just as good as it ever did. Not like some of the panzy house music I had to endure in the 90's. Go and download a copy of winmx and use it to get all the music you want.
Subject: Re: Hair metal, anyone?
I never got rid of it all in the first place.I still have over a 1000 albums on vinyl and about 500 on cd ! I'm just getting my turntable fixed so I can carry on playing the vinyl.Funny how some of it has aged well and some just sounds shockingly bad ! ;D
Subject: Re: Hair metal, anyone?
Hair Metal is by far one of the best genres of rock.
The music videos some of the groups would come out with were amazing.
Dokkens were some of the best ive seen. But its sad that it is dead.
Subject: Re: Hair metal, anyone?

You guys do that, and I'll do an entire show on my station devoted to it, even counting them down. :D
Subject: Re: Hair metal, anyone?
Oh how I long for the wonderful days of hair metal. Ill admit, in a way the look was totally cartoonish. But musically those bands were much more talented than anything that has come out in the last 10 years IMO. Unfortunatly, hair metal might be the last gasp of rock n' roll the way its supposed to be....loud, pompous, in your face and larger than life.
How I long for the days of the wild lead guitar solo, the fast heavy drumming and the fun, often obnoxious vocals. I guess it doesnt work in a Britney, Christina and Nsync world :-/
uugggghhhhhhhhhh!!!!
Subject: Re: Hair metal, anyone?
Now we're talking good music dammit!! I for one still get cold chills when I play tunes like "Walk in the shadows" (Queensryche), "Fool for your loving" (Whitesnake), "She shakes me" (Great White), "I wanna be loved" (House of Lords), "Uncle Tom's cabin" (Warrent), Power and the glory (Saxon), "Wild child" (W.A.S.P.),...etc.
I'm redoing some compilations that would give a grungie an eargasm (which would be their first)!
Subject: Re: Hair metal, anyone?
;D
Hair metal!! Yay!
I was quite the little headbanger in 7th/8th grade through high school. I'm amazed that my eardrums survived the assualt of the volume on my walkman. I still have most of my tapes, though unfortunately not all of them. Still have some of the t-shirts, too :)

lmao! The correct title is "Everything You Do (You're Sexing Me)", credited to Fiona with Kip Winger. It was a moderate hit here in the U.S. in the Winter of '90. It was off of Fiona's 1989 album, Heart Like a Gun. Unfortunately, the album is long out-of-print, although it did come out on CD here in the U.S. I have the cassette myself... :)

Subject: Re: Hair metal, anyone?
No thanks, not a fan.
It's the main genre of 80s music that I particularly don't care for.
Subject: Re: Hair metal, anyone?
in my high school, hair bands were strickly for the popular kids. my group listened to only iron maiden, ac/dc, and sabbath. i remember relentlessly teasing this kid in my math class because he loved winger. i've seen a party go down in flames when someone put on bon jovi in the record player.
admittedly, we've liked def leppard (especially pyromania) and when gun n' roses came around that changed everything. they were marketted as a hair band but really they were kick a** so it was cool for us stoner kids.
