Subject: Archie Bunker's Place

Written By: John_Seminal on 01/24/03 at 01:07 a.m.

I caught a show on TV Land called "Archie Bunkers Place". It has Carol O'Conner, the little girl they adopted, and one of Archie's Lodge brothers, but it is missing Meathead and Edith. He made references to them. Does anyone know anything about this show? How long did it last? It looks like a pretty funny show. Oh, the reason I put this in the 80's thread and not 70's thread is because the show has a copywrite of 1980.

I never knew there was a spin off of the original "All in the Family".

The Jefferson's and Maude were both spin-offs of All In The Family.....

I remember the show when it first came out. Gloria and Meathead had actually been off the show since "All In The Family". Maureen Stapleton was on for a little while but decided she didn't want to do the show any more so they had Edith's character pass away in her sleep. I remember that episode when I was a kid but not since and I understand that they will not show it in syndication. So Archie raises his niece Stephanie and another character, another niece I believe. And they did bring Gloria back for a spi-off show of her own.

Why won't they show that episode? I think that would be a huge episode, considering she was a main character in All in the Family. I wonder if anyone has a copy of that show. Was it good? Did they have a good goodbye for Edith? I hope they air it.

All in the Family was a big part of my childhood, we watched it every week.  When Archie died in real life, TV Land I think had a marathon all weekend full of All in The Family episodes.  I didnt watch them all, but I bet they showed that one then.  I know they showed the controversial one where Edith was or was almost raped.

"Archie Bunker's Place" replaced "All in the Family" in 1979. It was cancelled in 1983. (Right when Stephanie was starting to look foxy, dangit.  :'( )

Yeah, I read somewhere that in todays TV market it never would have been canceled with its raitings. Amazing that CBS killed the show. I am starting to watch the episodes for the first time on TV Land.

I'm don't know why they don't show it - my info could be wrong. I remember reading it on a "All In The Family" fan website - unfortunatly I lost the link. I don't remember the full episode but do recall the scene where Archie has finally come to realize that Edith is really gone and he his "speaking" to her - finally saying his goodbye. It would be really interesting to find out if that someone has a copy of that episode.

I searched for info on the "Death of Edith" episode some time back and learned that there never was one.  "Archie Bunker's Place" supposedly picks-up some time after Edith's death and she is mentioned in only a few episodes (in dialogue between Archie and Stephanie), and then, only rarely.

According to TV Guide, that episode will be on today, Saturday the 25th on TVLand. Check your listings.

I for one, want to see this episode. Carol O'Conner is such a good actor. He can set up punchlines better than anyone else I can think of.

Quick question for everyone. Did Edith appear in any of these "Archie Bunker's Place" shows. I read somewhere that her death episode occured at the start of season two. Was she in any episodes in season one?

I'd like to see it again too - thanks for the info.
I've been catching some of the TV Land episodes and Edith does appear in season one.

It was a two part episode, which aired at the start of the second season. I would guess 1981, as the first season aired in 1980.

Thanks for the heads up.  I just watched both episodes and spent an hour bawling like a baby.

It was a good episode, and my eyes got wet too. Archie Bunker's Place is a good series. It is missing some of the edge that All in the Family had, but that may not be a bad thing.

I was a kid when All In The Family was on the air and a teenager when they showed Archie Bunker's Place.  I remember both shows quite well, as well as the episode in which Edith's character dies.  It was very sad.  :(

As cutting as All in the Family was, I expected something more from the Edith death episode. I dunno what I expected, maybe a picture of her; or gloria and mike to make an apperance. I liked the episode, but I think it was missing some important charaters. The kid was a good addition, as it is something else that attaches this show with the old one.

I also like Archie's buisness partner. What a good job of setting up jokes he does. And did anyone notice that the cook is Ben Stillers mom? She has nice jugs too.

Hi!

I've never seen 'All in the family' with Archie Bunker but I do know it was an American adaption of ''Til death us do part' with Warren Mitchell as the ranting West Ham supporter 'Alf Garnet' (Archie equivalent).

The show basically featured Alf Garnet ranting about then modern day life and politics. It was notorious for it's controversial bad language at the time (How many times did he say 'bloody'?) by calling his wife a 'silly old cow'.

The British show had a spin-off called 'In sickness and in health' but wasn't as raw as the initial premise.

I hope I've added a little perspective.

Cheers.  :)
