Subject: Michael Jordan of the 80's

Written By: Paul S. on 01/23/03 at 10:17 p.m.

Simply put, the Michael Jordan of the 1980's was a pure, unadulterated, young bad a$$.  He won his championships in the 90s, but in the 80s.......this guy was SO COOL!!!  Most of his flashy dunks came from the 80s, not the 90s.

Remember his gold chains he used to wear?  And those red and black Air Jordans?  In the 90s it seemed like Jordan had to tame his apperance for a more mainstream American audience....simply because he became so popular.  But if you watch old clips from the 80s, you see him in all his young bad glory.

By the way, check out ESPN and download the really cool Jordan Vs. Jordan commercial.  Using fancy computer work, they have the young and cool Michael Jordan from 1984 or '85, going up against the present day 2003 Michael Jordan that is like 39 or 40 years old.  It will also be aired again in the Super Bowl.  And let me tell you, this is one of the coolest SuperBowl commericials.  Seeing the young Jordan from the 80s is a treat.  They got everything right, the shoes, the hair, but they forgot Jordan's gold chains he used to wear in the 80s.

Did anyone ever own those Air Jordans from 1985?

I am a huge Jordan fan. It is amazing how good he still is. If he did not retire, he would be chasing the all time points leader, not just passing number 3 on the list. I think he is the best all time, not just for the number of points he scores, but his rebound, assist, and steals avarages. I hope he leads Washington to a championship this year.

Anyways, I agree, the Jordan of the 80's was awsome. I never owned his original Air Jordans, but I did buy a pair in high school. If I remember correctly, I think they were very expensive at $140.00.

I remember in the 80's the press kept saying that Jordan would never win a single NBA championship, because all he did was score.  It's so silly to think about that now, considering the guy has 6 NBA championships from the 90's.  But back in the 80's most of his scoring was made off of dunks, so the press came down on him for lacking outside shooting skills.

AND, back in the 80's, Jordan was accused of being a ball hog like Dominique Wilkins.  But Wilkins was a real ball hog that never passed to anyone.  Jordan just didn't have enough help around him in the 80's so there was no one to pass to.  Jordan was always under the shadow of Magic Johnson and Larry Bird back then and to a lesser extent even Isiah Thomas.  How times have changed for his Airness.  :)

Living in Chicago all my life, I remember him from the very beginning.  I didn't have a pair of AJ's, but my brother did.  I have to agree with John.  He is the best of all time...

Those originals, if people still have them are probably good collectors items by now.

I read about the Jordan commercial.  They used a body double and airbrushed MJ's face onto the double.

I did like the young Jordan, but remember it was only after he stopped being so selfish and scoring everything, AND had Scotty Pippen and the supporting cast, that he was able to go to the "next level".

There's no way the Wiz are going to a championship this year, but I think with Stackhouse and the new talent they have a solid base for the future.  They might make the playoffs though.

Jordan was every kids hero in the 80s.

However, nowadays, he is just another old player in the NBA.

My question is:  how many times can one player retire and get the big send-offs by the media and fans before they stop caring?

Well, being from Chicago, I can tell you that his first "retirement" from the Bulls wasn't because of his age or anything like that.  Basically, it was a time-out to get his act together off the court:  i.e. gambling, womanizing, etc.  But, I agree 100%.  Jordan, make up your  mind!!!

Y'know what?  He's Michael Jordan.  After what he's done for the sport, and building a legend that serves as the standard for "greatest player ever", he can do whatever he wants.

I'll take Jordan in an armchair at midcourt against the L.A. Clippers anyday ;)  *SuperFans reference*

I do not think Jordan needed Pippen. Look at Pipen now, he is not that valuable. Pipen became good because of Jordan. I think the combination of Jordan-Stackhouse-Hughes is as good as any in the NBA. They are missing a quality center, but they want to see what happens with Brown. He could be good in another year or two, scoring 20+ and rebounding 12+. If the wizards found a decent center this year, who can rebound 12+ a night they would have it won. They are asking too much from Jordan to rebound 8 a game. It is killing his legs for the second half of the game.

BTW, I read that if the Wizards make the play offs, Jordan has a deal set with Euing to come out of retirement to play. I think Euing is over the hill, but if teams take him seriously and double team him, it could open lanes for Jordan and Stackhouse.

I hope the Wizards win it all. It would be the best basketball championship ever.

I  agree!  I always thought of Michael Jordan as really being an 80s icon, NOT a 90s one.  If you were a kid in 1984 or '85, you REMEMBER the news that Jordan generated on your local playground.  The guy just belongs to the pop culture of the 1980s more then he does the 90s, IMO.   His popularity exploded in the 80s, and that was the decade he earned his reptuation and nickname.  The 90s were just the decade Jordan won all his championships.

And as mentioned, in the 80s Jordan was the gold chain wearing young bad a$$.  In the 90s he was the more mature,  fade away/perimeter shooting, actively aware "role model".  In the 80s Jordan didn't seem to know that he was seen as a role model, and it reflected in his ultra bad persona he had then.  I always thought Jordan did get a bit more boring in the 90s when he realized he had to be self concious about what he does on and off the court because of the kiddies and families that began to take notice of him.

Don't hate the human highlight film....he was a bad mo'fo.  All Nique had was Spud Webb.

I guess your perception of the "modern" Jordan is skewed because he's now the go-to-guy on an otherwise poor team...sorta like in Chicago, but in Chicago, he was 20-something.  The fact that he can still play at a high level (for anyone) at age 40 is amazing to me.

And he's not warming the pines like Robert Parish did, sticking around until he could break some silly games-played record.  He's actually contributing to the team.

They're not going to win the championship this year...it'll probably be a struggle just to make the playoffs.  But they'll be better in the future because of Jordan's presence this year, and his front-office leadership come next year.  Not to mention the crop of rookies he has drafted.

I don't like Jordan. Never have and never will. It's all about the Purple and Gold Pride!
