You are so right.  Its always fun to "go back in time" and play the games we grew up with.  I still deeply regret throwing my Atari and games out when the unit quit working.  If only I knew back then how much I would miss it.

I vaguely remember playing that game and ET falling into a hole for which you could never get him out of, so you had to reset the game and start all over :) :D ;D

I used to do that too.  Or purposely miss the ship.  ;D ;) 8)

There is an Atari 2600 emulator called Stella that you can download for free from a number of different sites.  There are Windows and Mac versions. You can also find free downloads of almost all the old games.  Perfect quality, and you can play them right on your PC.

Tell any kid these old games were state-of-the-art back then and you're guaranteed some odd looks!

Thing was, people had to use their imagination a lot more; no GTA Vice City of Unreal Tournament..those kind of grafix were only seen in films like Tron etc. We were quite content with our 2600 and a couple of games like Berserk and Defender..

Anyone ever taken the 2600 apart? I had to fix one once, expected it to be crammed full of chips (and cobwebs), but surprising the board inside is only slightly larger than a cartridge! Obviously the days of smaller-is-better didn't exist then.

It is always nice to look back :)

I remember Frogger where you'd get the frog to his lily pad before he gets run over by a car. That was a fun game. ;)
