Subject: Meaning of lyrics in a Cyndi Lauper song.

Written By: JETTA00 on 01/12/03 at 11:44 a.m.

Hey everyone I have a question.  In "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" Cyndi Lauper sings:

"I come home in the morning light,
My mother says "When you gonna live your life right?"
Oh,mother,dear,
We're not the fortunate ones..."

What does she mean by we're not the fortunate ones??  I don't understand!!

I'll take a stab at this one. Cyndi always seem to embrace the qualities of the "middle-class common man" in her videos. Look at the average household kitchen featured in the video for the song in question or her living in a trailer in the video for "Time After Time".

My guess would be that she's telling her mother that they have to live with the cards they've been dealt. They aren't rich, they aren't upper crust, they aren't anything more than they are and likely never will be. Therefore, they aren't "the fortunate ones" - the ones born to riches or achieving great status through events either brought about by fate or luck or great labor.

Doesn't mean she can't have fun, though. Girls just wanna have fun after all.

Ok,How about "SheBop"? Can you understand what she's singing about in that song:

"SheBop,SheBop,a Lebop
HiBop,HeyBop a LeBop
I don't think you understand.

I know what she means in this song. :) I don't know whether I should explicitly say or wait until we have some guesses first.

Actually, the line is 'I hope HE will understand' . In the lyrics from '12 Deadly Cyns...And Then Some' there is an arrow point up after the 'he' so he represents God. She hopes that God will understand.

When I saw the name of this thread I immediatly thought it would be a bout 'She Bop'. I guess I was wrong, but soon the discussion has turned towards it ;D

Considering the title of the song and the context of the comment, Cyndi could be talking about how males can go out and do what they want without worrying about getting a bad reputation, while females are expected to stay home and "live your life right".

That's just a thought. I'd wondered about that line before, but never gave it much thought until now. :)

Come on, you can't be serious!?!?!  Think of what "bopping" is slang for...a 4 letter word that is not allowed on here... :P  It's about human nature and the "freeness" of society at the time.

oh, and it's she bop, he bop, we bop,
I bop, you bop, they bop,

Actually you are incorrect...the song She Bop is not about fornicating but rather about pleasuring one's self...

As for the Girls Just Wanna Have Fun question, I agree that I always assumed she meant that they didn't have a lot of material things and so she wasn't afforded the luxuries that the wealthy had....

Exactly. But is more specifically aimed at the female gender, beacuse the subject is so taboo.

Seems pretty cut and dried to me. It's about golddigging. It says that people are all thinking of themselves and what they can get out of anything - even something like a romantic relationship. Sure, they'll be good to you for awhile but the moment a more lucrative opportunity comes along, you're out of here.

"They shake your hand and they smile
And they buy you a drink
They say we'll be your friends
We'll stick with you till the end
Ah but everybody's only
Looking out for themselves
And you say well who can you trust
I'll tell you it's just
Nobody else's money"

I agree with Jonman & Chris; "She bop" is clearly a tune about Cindy getting naughty with herself. "...they say a stitch in time will save nine. Oops she bop....". Along with all the other suggestive things said in the song, I'd say the subject is quite obvious.

You're right... Turning Japanese is a song about masturbation.  It's title refers to the squinty look on one's face at the time of climax.

We were listening to my Billy Idol Greatest hits cd last night, and when Dancin' With Myself came on, my hubby said that he had heard that it's about masturbation.  How many more songs must I add to the list of "Songs I merrily sang, LOUDLY, in PUBLIC as a pre-teen/teenager while being totally CLUELESS as to their meaning".   :-[ :P

Yep - it sure is! There appear to be a lot, don't there! If you check the link that I posted on the previous page, you will find out all you need to know on the themes of many 'dirty' songs of the 80s ;)
