Subject: 80s Metal and New Wave. I loved them both.
Although my main passion in the 80s was Metal (Great White, Quensryche, TNT, Whitesnake, Saxon, House of Lords, Riot,...etc.), I also liked bands like U-2, the Cure, the Smiths, A flock of seaguls, Howard Jones, Duran Duran, Bananorama, Belinda Carlisle, Naked Eyes, Spandou Ballet, Icicle Works, the Alarm, Missing Persons, and all the rest.
It's funny; I can only think of two of my Metal head friends in the 80s who had any appreciation for New Wave (most thought it all sucked). And my New Wave friends? Most of them thought of the Metal crowd, as well as the music, to be barbaric and unsophisticated. I was a clean cut Rocker. My hair was long and cropped but I always dressed nice (Miami Vice style). It was kinda nice to be able to enjoy the best of both worlds.

I was more into the metal, like twisted sister and hair bands metal. I also liked duran duran and some of the more mainstream rock like springstien. I never got into the smiths or new wave until after the 80s passed and I was on napster downloading music from the 80s. Now I like it all. For me in the 80's, if they would have played it on Miami Vice, I would have liked it. I was very top 40.

THANK GOD!!! I also was caught in the middle. Being a cheerleader, I was expected to like all of the mainstream stuff, but I just couldn't get enough of Whitesnake, Great White, Ozzy, Metallica, etc. All of my friends thought I was crazy. Nice to know I'm not the only one! ;D 8)

I never did 80s metal until like the mid 90's, but I did like most mainstream stuff......but where I was teased was the fact that I ALSO liked Barry Manilow and the Carpenters!!!!! EEK!

Queensryche? ? ? :o :o :o
I'm a Queensryche fan too! ;) :)
They're not easy to come by anymore. Q's Fans, that is. ;D
I too liked the best of both worlds, "Metal" and "New Wave" (though I remember it being called "New Romantic").

You have to love the hair bands. They were my favorite. What was your favorite group?

I am a Queensryche fan also! You really don't see them around often, but they are great. Geoff Tate has an awesome voice. :)

Yes he does! He sings Opera professionally too. :)

My favorite group? Well it wasn't Barry Manilow, heh! (Although I do confess to liking Kenny G) My favorite Metal group was and is still Great White with Queensryche and Dokken a close 2nd and 3rd. My favorite New wave band was U2.
Oh I'm so glad to hear that I wasn't the only in the 80s who strattled the fence. You should have seen some of the looks I got from the Metal crowd when they saw how I dressed when I showed up at a Hollywood night club like the Troubadour, or the New Wave crowd when they saw my hair when I showed up at one of their parties. They were interesting times that led to many exciting flings, but it was hard to find a girlfriend who shared my broad taste in music and style of dress. When I finally met my match, I married her.

I love both too, especially because I play guitar and keyboards. My favorite '80s song (or any decade for that matter) would be one of the few where good synth and good guitar meet, "Jump" by Van Halen.

Wow, I didn't know that. It sure explains alot, though. :)

ChrisPC: You couldn't have possibly picked a cooler car than the Delorean for an icon. If I was rich, I would make a limmo out of one of those.
I think Howard Jones had good "synth", but one CD you need to get (if you don't already have it) is the CD from the movie "Bloodsport". It's been OOP for years but you can still find a used one on an Ebay auction from time to time. That Bloodsport CD has some of the most radical synth I've ever heard. I used to work out to that CD when I was into Quan Chi. A hell of a good movie too, an 80s classic!

I am a Glam metal queen first and formost but I listened to the charts in the 80's too and liked alot of the bands I heard there.U2 are probably one of my all time fav's but be careful as I found to my surprise they are far from popular on this board which still amazes me!!
