Not so much a band, but I was devastated to learn that Cat Stevens had decided to leave his singing songwriting career to become a muslim. Devastated.

STYX and Journey

Van Halen. They were still a great band after David Lee Roth left and Sammy took over. But, it wasnt the same without Dave. Too bad they couldnt get along. And now Ive heard they are involved in a lawsuit over royalties. Now it really looks like Dave wont be coming back EVER.

Easy, the Bangles.

Yazoo (and when Vince Clarke left Depeche Mode!)

Definitely The Police; they remain my all-time favorite band to this day (well, possibly tied with the B-52's). Their music was awesome! They were the ultimate songwriters and musicians, and they put on one hell of a live show, too. It was sad when they broke up, but they did it the right way...at the height of their popularity.
I've followed Sting's career ever since (the other band members, Andy and Stewart, have only really done obsure thingsA), and I can honestly say he's almost as good alone as they were together.

What he said. It was never the same for me, and I couldn't listen to them as much with Sammy. IMO Sammy isn't a group singer...he is only a solo singer.

Mel and Kim, although that was forced by circumstances beyond anyone's control...
ABBA (Listen to one of their last big hits, "The Winner Takes It All", and tell me this band wasn't going through serious trauma)

I'll admit if I was old enough at the time Wham! broke up I would've cried :'( lol I really like a lot of their songs. Sure, most of the songs are cheese but I think Careless Whisper is a brilliant song. It was written by George Michael when he was only 17! Also, Last Christmas is one of my favorite Christmas songs.

My heart muscle aches :( :'(
But at least they went out on top...and they still have the reputation of being one of the best rock and roll bands of all time.

I go with Eli on this, great band. Unfortuantely Chris Cornell's solo stuff has come no way close to the bands music, not even to his Temple of the Dog release. Matt Cameron is great to have as Peal Jam's drummer though. :)

I am only going to say this once then never respond to this type of post again. The thread is heartbreaking band break ups...it didn't specify 80's. The Beatles were mentioned, were they in the 80's? So if you don't think that Soundgarden should be mentioned, get over it!
