Subject: What wrestling shows were seen in your area?

Written By: SammyReed on 11/28/02 at 09:25 p.m.

In the 80's, I had a theory that there were so many different wrestling shows, seen in so many different areas, that you probably couldn't count them all.
In our area (NE Tenn./SW Va.) for example, we saw the same NWA and WWF stuff the rest of the world saw, but there were other shows that were done more locally or regionally. We watched "Continental Championship Wrestling" out of Alabama, and "CWA Wrestling" (later USWA) from Memphis. In the early 80's, we had "ICW Wrestling" from Lexington, Ky. and "Southeastern Championship Wrestling" from Knoxville.
I wondered if there were other areas of the country that had wrestling shows in their area that we in our area never saw. So that is my question here.
What wrestling shows did you watch out there? Have you even seen the shows I mentioned or not? I think this stuff would be interesting.

The only wrestling I remember from my childhood was a family named the Von Eric's. They had this move they used where they took their hand and attached it to a persons skull, then squeezed until the other person was near death. I forget what it was called, perhaps the Iron Claw or something like that. Other wrestlers I remember were the Iron Shiek, Rowdy Rowdy Piper, a hugely overweight man who dressed as a woman, and Hulk Cogan.

I have not watched wrestling since I was about 10 or 11 years old, but when I was younger I used to like it.

Wrestling = big, sweaty, roid monkeys pretending to beat each other up....didn't watch it...don't watch it...never will watch it...

But that didn't answer the question...we had "Stampede Wrestling" in the 80s...can't remember what it was before that or what it became...

I've been watching wrestling for quite a long time and during  the mid 80's and early 90's,there was the famous WWF(E),NWA and then changed to WCW then went bankrupt. ;D,GWF and the USWA.right now, there is just not enough wrestling shows in New York anymore. The ratings are garbage and the WWF ratings might continue to plummet if they continue what they're doing. -howard- :)

I don't watch today's wrestling, except for a local show called "Southern States Wrestling", and I'm not watching that right now for a while.
My primary topic here, quite obviously, is wrestling shows that were on in the 80's before wrestling went to heck. Those were the really great days for me.

I was never into wrestling, but I do recall that I could pick up WOAY-TV in Oak Hill, WV, and they always had live wrestling from their studios every Saturday night.  I never really watched that, but I do know it was there.

I lived in South Texas in the 80s. We had G.L.O.W. (Gorgous Ladies of Wrestling). A friend of mine and his 5 year old son would sit there and watch it all the time. It was sooooo fake I couldn't stand it.

Female wrestling. Now that sounds promising. Perhaps in jello or oil. I would be willing to tune in to watch that.

In the 70's we had Big Time Wrestling out of Portland Oregon.  That was low budget and before the theartrics.  A few that were based out of here that were known elsewhere was Jimmy (before he was nicknamed Superfly) Snuka
Playboy Buddy Rose
Dutch Savage.
I saw a match in SFrancisco with my dad in mid seventies that had Moon Dog Mane, Pat Patterson, Mr. Saito, Fugi, and others that have escaped my memory.
Haven't been a fan in 25 years.

They didn't have jello or oil. Just chicks in getups. It was really the worst acting I have ever seen.

I caught it a few times, very bad.  Just T&A but very low budget and very little athletic talent.

Let me describe the ladies' wrestling shows of the 80's, such as GLOW and POWW. No mud or oil wrestling here. It was ladies' wrestling that was just like men's wrestling. The same kind of interviews, championships, etc.
To put it nicely, POWW was superior to GLOW.

Or,you could watch WWF and see Dawn Marie,Tori,Stacy Keibler wrestle in jello, pudding, whipped cream or better yet the other night on Smackdown,Tori and Dawn were having a Pilgrim Fashion Show and Tori was throwing food everywhere especially on Dawn Marie's wet bikini. ;D That was pretty much the highlights of that moment.women's wrestling has gone downhill as of late,I'm sorry to say.-howard-

Also PRISM(an '80's premium cable channel)had WWF Wrestling live from the Phila. Spectrum.

In the 80s, I watched Georgia Championship Wrestling on TBS religously.  I also saw some WWF, until it became a cartoon sideshow and Cyndi Lauper and all of that.  Mid-Southern Wrestling (Lawler's fed out of Memphis), USWA, some AWA, and some Championship Wrestling from Florida.

And Howard, WCW did not go bankrupt.  It was owned by Ted Turner.  He just got tired of being in the rasslin' business and didn't have the guys or the desire to compete with Vince anymore.  The backstage was in shambles and everyone was on a powertrip and egos were running rampant.  They ALWAYS had plenty of money.  How else do you think they were able to pay Goldberg, Nash, Sting, Steiner, Luger and Flair the remainder of their contracts long after WCW was sold?  It was just a classic story of something good going bad.

Perhaps it was ECW that you're thinking of that went bankrupt.  Guys weren't getting paychecks and Paul Heyman had to finally throw in the towel.  He just didn't have the money to keep up with the competition.

I know, I know.  More information than you wanted!

How about Bill Watts' UWF?It was on Channel 65 in my area,HSN had the channel on nights that the UWF was not broadcast. Bill Watts proved beyond the shadow of a doubt how insane he was when heSOUGHT-and actually SIGNED-The FREEBIRDS!The Freebirds were the craziest bad guys of 80's wrestling! What was Watts THINKING!?!

In my area (New Zealand) I remember seeing WWF wrestling.  Those were the days with the Ultimate Warrior, The Rockers, The Hart Foundation, Brutus the Barber Beefcake, and New Zealand's own - The Bushwackers!  ;)

I also remember the days when it was called Superstars of Wrestling...and that shows my age real well.  :P

Glad you mentioned Brutus Beefcake. At first he was a heel-solo,then with Greg "The Hammer" Valentine. Then at Wrestlemania 3, his good side came out, then he turned hero! Did any of you know his real name is Ed Leslie, and that he managed to live thru a parasailing accident that almost killed him? I think he lived because he was a FIGHTER,he had good hospital care from the outset, and because his body was in great shape! I miss him,I wish he would make a comeback. PS, this female actually thought he was a HOTTIE!

Yes I liked Beefcake. Another pathologically happy wrestler that lit the crowd up when he entered the ring. To find out the true extent of Beefcake's injuries, here's a quick website to look at.

http://www.wrestleview.com/info/faq/brutusbeefcake.shtml

As far as wrestling goes, Britain had the English stuff shown on Saturday afternoons featuring Kendo Nagassaki, Big Daddy (the most unlikely hero ever in retrospect), Rollerball Rocco, Fit Finlay (the same man went to WCW years later) and Giant Haystacks. It was a time where wrestling was attempting to be a sport and not sports entertainment - it was pretty good though.

I had my fill of WCW Worldwide to start with (1991) which was about 50 minutes of squash matches. Then it reinvented itself a few years later and was only 40 minutes long. From there I tried to watch as much Nitro as I could around a friend's house.

Now I occassionally watch Raw but mainly watch Smackdown on Sky.

Bill Watts was a genius!  I do remember watching UWF a short while before WCW bought them out and picked up Jim Ross, Sting, "Dr. Death" Steve Williams, etc.

I've always known that wrestling is staged, but in those days, it was so cool that nobody cared.  These days, it just doesn't keep my interest  ::)

I think I liked Hacksaw Jim Duggan because he was sooooo lame!  Elaborate props and costumes where all the rage, and all this guy could come up with was a two-by-four. HOOOAAAH!

Who remembers Cyndi Lauper's video for "The Goonies-R-Good Enough?"  There were two parts.  You had Captain Lou, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Andre the Giant, and I can't remember who else.

I briefly worked for "Stampede Wrestling".  But I booked off on those nights... too many drugz for my liking.  :(

I remember a not-too nice confrontation with Bret Hart's girlfriend/wife.
