Subject: What's your favourite 80's Aussie Bands
I was just wondering what Aussie bands (from the 80's) you guys like. Being Aussie I have heaps of favourites - Brian Mannix and the Uncanny X-Men, IceHouse, Mental as Anything, 1927, Noiseworks, Choirboys and INXS just to name a few.
What's everyone else's favourites?
Subject: Re: What's your favourite 80's Aussie Bands
Speaking as a guy from the Washington State in the US I would say INXS was my fovorite.
Subject: Re: What's your favourite 80's Aussie Bands
INXS, by far, I saw them live in '94, they were great, early Midnight Oil was pretty cool, oh! and AC/DC, my god AC/DC... 8)
Subject: Re: What's your favourite 80's Aussie Bands
AC/DC and the Hoodoo Gurus. :)
Subject: Re: What's your favourite 80's Aussie Bands
My fave Aussie band of all time would be Icehouse. They had such fantastic music. Also really liked Mental As Anything and of course, Inxs. There were so many truly great 80s Aussie acts! :)
Subject: Re: What's your favourite 80's Aussie Bands
INXS, Men at Work, and AC/DC.
Subject: Re: What's your favourite 80's Aussie Bands
AC/DC of course ;D
Subject: Re: What's your favourite 80's Aussie Bands
Yeah, out the 80s came some of the best Aussie bands ever.
INXS, Men at Work, Midnight Oil, AC/DC
Subject: Re: What's your favourite 80's Aussie Bands
In terms of chart success (both singles and albums, combined), the most popular Aussie acts here in the U.S. during the '80s were, and in this order:
01) RICK SPRINGFIELD
02) AIR SUPPLY
03) OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN
04) AC/DC
05) INXS
06) MEN AT WORK
07) LITTLE RIVER BAND
08 )BEE GEES
Personally, I collect them all... :-)
Using the same criteria, the most successful Aussie acts of all-time here in the U.S. are, and in this order:
01) BEE GEES
02) OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN
03) AC/DC
04) HELEN REDDY
05) RICK SPRINGFIELD
06) INXS
07) LITTLE RIVER BAND
08 )AIR SUPPLY
Both ICEHOUSE and MIDNIGHT OIL would rank in the top 15 of both lists above (w/ a slight edge going to ICEHOUSE)...
The HOODOO GURUS did make some minor noise here in the late '80s/early '90s, but nothing really major to write home about...
CHOIRBOYS and 1927 both ended up being minor one-hit wonders here, and thus were only minor blips on the radar screen...
And while both MENTAL AS ANYTHING and NOISEWORKS did see their material released Stateside, neither achieved any chart success at all (singles or albums)...
As for UNCANNY X-MEN, they never managed to get popular enough to secure a U.S. record deal, and thus their singles & albums were never even released here, so very few Americans are familiar w/ them...
Subject: Re: What's your favourite 80's Aussie Bands
I would have to say The Hummingbirds - a little Sydney guitar-based indie pop band that was overwhelmed by the marketing push behind Ratcat. In that same vein, The Falling Joys had a few nice songs as well. Also must mention Club Hoy (sweet girl pop duo), and the Clouds (were they Aussie or Kiwi?), whose guitar-pop was a bit moreprickly than the others I previously mentioned.
Subject: Re: What's your favourite 80's Aussie Bands
For the record- I hated Air Supply.
Apologies to any fans out there, during there peak I was a big fan of AC/DC though.
Subject: Re: What's your favourite 80's Aussie Bands
I love Man at Work! INXS too.... and Olivia N. John... well, i like "Lets get Physical", its sooo 80's!

From your list BrianMannixGirl, I can see that this is one of your favourite subjects :D
You have some good taste in music - I loved Mental as Anything (and Martin Plaza) and I thought Iva was soooo cute from Icehouse. Also a fan of 1927.
And we have already discussed Brian Mannix - his mullet haircut, his frosted pink lipstick and ripped clothes - what an 80's hunk! Oh, I liked his singing too ;)
Subject: Re: What's your favourite 80's Aussie Bands
brianmannixgirl, do you know of any web sites with pics of brian mannix with what he looks like now?
Subject: Re: What's your favourite 80's Aussie Bands
I have searched for Brian sites to no avail.
I did see him backstage after he brought Countdown The Musical to Perth a couple of years ago.
He still looks the same !! Only 40 !!
He still wears skin tight jeans, and teeny t shirts, the hair is a little less spikey, but no less in quantity. The face is slightly lined - but I have to say - lookin pretty good for 40. He has two kiddies now. It scares me that he is a father !!
There was recent footage of him on the ABC doco Long Way To The Top.
I recently found my boxes (and boxes and boxes) of stuff on Xmen. There is so much of it - I really should get off my butt and make a website for them. I might make it a 2003 goal. I am already running official fansites for Tom Burlinson and John Waters but I am sure I could squeeze in some time for another one.
Subject: Re: What's your favourite 80's Aussie Bands
I have to say that it is because of Brian Mannix that wipeoutgirl and I found this site. When I first got my computer, wipeoutgirl came over to give me a few tips and we started searching for a few things. Anyway, she was telling me how you can find anything on the internet, so we searched for Brian Mannix - nothing! We then started looking at 80's sites and came across this one and the rest is history.
We have told you before, haven't we BrianMannixGirl, that whenever wipeoutgirl and I get together for a party, the last song of the night we always play is 50 years. WE LOVE THAT SONG - but our younger friends think we're nuts!!! We showed one of our younger friends an old video of that song and she was so unimpressed - she kept saying "THAT'S the guy you are talking about. He's not good looking" Anyway, she's lucky we still talk to her after that comment!!!!!
Subject: Re: What's your favourite 80's Aussie Bands
Awwwwww Gecko that brings back so many memories !! 50 Years is still the song I want played at my funeral - I laughed and cried when I heard it playing on Secret Life Of Us in Wills final scenes !!
Its stupid that I have Brians entire life history (even his baby photos) packed away in boxes. What a waste.
So I will definately look into building a site. I just need to get my other ones up to scratch so it doesnt look like I am neglecting them.
Onto young Iva - havent heard much about him in a while and then just found something in the paper this week ! He is in the middle of digitally remastering the entire Icehouse back catalogue for re release. So thats something to look forward to.

That makes me laugh ;D I missed it being played on Secret Life of Us, but wipeoutgirl said she was on the computer with the TV going in the background when she heard the song played!!! She nearly fell off her chair - who would have thought that they would have picked that song.
