Subject: DeLorean

Written By: Jelina on 11/12/02 at 10:54 a.m.

Maybe it's just me, but these cars are expensive, maybe becuase they're 'collectors', but I had found one this past spring for under $1000.  So why would this person want to sell it for that much if all the others are selling them for anywhere between 10, 000 and 50, 000 ???

Either he doesn't know what he has, or there's somethign wrong with it and he's tryign to pass it off on some dumb person and dash with the cash

I'm not sure, but the photo was posted with the ad and it was a nice car, I mean no rust, nothin', so maybe he's just an idiot overall..lol...

there won't be any rust on the visible body panels.. they're stainless steel.. the frame on the other hand is not stainless, and will rust out.. the problem of course, is that parts that are unique to the DeLorean (body panels, interior pieces) are not going to be cheap.. so it might be a "parts only" car if enough is wrong with it..

I've often dreamed of finding a cheap DeLorean with a blown engine.. and doing a frame off restoration, rebuilding the frame with stainless steel to match the rest of the body, and reinforcing it hold a larger more powerful engine.. unfortunately my garage isn't that roomy.. and I doubt I could ever find the time even if I could do the rest of the work myself..

I would think a Dolorean wouldn't be practical...could you imagine opening those doors and clocking someone in the chin at the supermarket?

lmao...I can just picture it... You'd end up having to park way the hell at the end, just so you don't kill anyone.

Hi Synchronos...actually, the DeLorean gullwing doors are hinged towards the bar in the center of the roof so they literally open straight up, and they require at least a couple inches less clearing room than a standard door.  The only reason someone would get clocked by a DeLorean door is if they're retarded, like Biff Tannen in Back to the Future Part II :)

In regards to the other concerns...yes, it is a collector's car, and yes, parts are expensive because you can only get them from DMC.

You know, I was just a bit surprised by the cheapness of your subject car, regardless of parts-car status.

But then, I'm even more shocked by what I see as low asking prices for these cars even in VG/Ex (claimed) shape!  Look at this!
http://www.hemmings.com/hemmings/searchesnew/cars/searchindex.cfm?fa=searchpage2&tablename=vCarSearch&&make=delorean&model=&type=&year1=&year2=&keyword=&se
arching=&country=&state=&canada=&make_model=&CFID=7647024&CFTOKEN=13060852

They must not be in much demand by collectors because this is cheap for a car that is rather low-production.  Hell, I've never seen 1 live in my life (barring any car shows - still don't think I've seen 1)!  I could've bought these rather than my new car!

Where the Delorean from?

Subject: Re: DeLorean

Written By: scaryfast on 11/14/02 at 09:15 p.m.

DeLoreans were made by a small company founded by a guy who used to work for one of the big three car companies in the U.S. (I think it was Ford...) The guy's name is John Z. DeLorean. While he started his dream car company, he apparently got into financial trouble that led him to problems with the law, he got busted for money laundering and he was also involved to some extent in drug related charges, he was convicted and I think he was released not too long ago or was about to get out of jail. The cars are cheap because aside from the stainless steel bodywork and unusual styling, they were nothing really special (except one that was capable of traveling through time...) and real car enthusiasts were never interested in the car. Because its performance was not very impressive and poor quality and reliability were well known charasteristics of the cars, their value remains merely emotional for people like us, lovers of all things 80's, but not for people with a genuine interest in cars. There are several DeLorean owner clubs in the US  so parts shouldn't be a big problem, and the engines were manufactured by GM.

DeLorean founded his factory in Northern Ireland with a *huge* development grant - in effect, subsidising the cars he produced to the tune of a few thousand each (pounds, not dollars).  When they didn't sell in anything like the numbers expected, he did lots of naughty things to try and keep the place open, which is pretty much what he got put in jail for, IIRC.

Strangely enough, I went past the old factory site last week...

The stainless steel body was really innovative.  Just don't drive up to 88 mph.   ;)
