Subject: payphone rate increase
Anybody recall when the price of a local call at a payphone went from .10 to .20 in California?
Subject: Re: payphone rate increase
yeah I remember that! It use to be so cheap to make a call!! No one uses payphones anymore because of cellphones, so they should lower the price to attract more people! Remember when it was just 25 cents and now it's 35...it was so easy just to drop a quarter in...now i have to go looking for a dime as well!! ;)

Actually its .50 here in California. May be different elsewhere.
I was actually hoping somebody knew what year.
Subject: Re: payphone rate increase
i don't remember the specific year, but after it went up to .35, it irked me to watch people put only one coin into the phone on tv shows (just a little pet peeve i have) >:(
Subject: Re: payphone rate increase
I know here it's .35 too...
Do a lot of people still use pay phones anymore? Seeing cell phones absolutely everywhere, it doesn't seem like people even need the pay phones much anymore. ::)

Not very often, some companies have lost a lot of money with them lately.

Cellphones equal the reason for higher payphone charges.....

Hooray for cell phones, didn't get mine until 3 years ago when the price made sense and you could figure out the calling plans.

Pay phones are .50 here too In Memphis...sometimes if you are lucky you stop at one that is still .35, but very rarely. Im with the cell phone thing though. Ive had my cell phone for like 4 years...We have Cricket here. Unlimited calling, including long distance for 46 a month. only catch is, you have to stay within your calling area, wouldnt be good for someone who traveled a lot, But I live in a tri-state area. Takes 10 mins to get to Arkansas and 10 min. to get to Mississippi and just a couple of hours to get to Missouri, Georgia, or Alabama

Payphones just went up here a few years ago. Before it was (believe it or not) 10 cent. Now, I think it is 35 cents. I'm not too sure because I haven't used on in so long.

I can remember making 10 cent calls from payphones in 1983 in western Canada. Learned to phreak in 1984 when the rates "shot up" to 25 cents. heheh. Any canadians here? Maybe you can tell me why payphone rates are still 25 cents in British Columbia but 50 cents in Alberta -- still the same teleco (Telus). Go figure... ???
