Subject: Question About Rap Artists

Written By: TheUnOnesOne on 11/07/02 at 07:07 p.m.

Hello everyone.......

I've entered a contest consisting of questions regarding several artists, but I don't really know the rap artists and was wondering if you could help.  The question is........

"What was the first rap song to hit #1?"

Can anyone help me?  I'd appreciate it!   :)

"Raper's Delight" by The SugarHill Gang?

That's a good possibility, for sure.  ;)

Well, I don't know if this counts but Blondie's Rapture went to #1 in 1981. ???
She's not a rap artist, but I believe this song was "rap" in an earlier form.
Just my 2 cents. :D

Gosh, that may be it!  :D

Debbie Harry brought Rap into the mainstream with the help of a new and awesome channel exclusively devoted to videos 24-7, MTV. Her video with Fab 5 Freddy called "Rapture" was played in regular rotation.

Note: I miss the original premise.... the original MTV.  :'(

R.I.P. MTV

Actually I thought it was Run DMC that brought hip hop into heavy rotation onto MTV ???

According to an old, Googled thread on here...

The first rap song to go all the way to #1 on the pop charts was (drum roll, please), yes, none other than Vanilla Ice w/ "Ice Ice Baby", in November of '90 (yet another white artist). He would take the song to #6 on the r&b charts as well...

Blondie's "Rapture" was earlier, in the first days of MTV.

I'll say that Blondie exposed mainstream to Rap and made it possible for other acts to follow. She paved the way.  :)

"Yo MTV Raps" was born in 1988. Fab 5 Freddy, Dr Dre and Ed Lover were the regular hosts. This was the medium by which many more Rap artists recieved frequent and exclusive video play, thus cementing Rap into the mainstream.
