Subject: What did you want to be when you grew up?
I put this in the 80s because most of us love the 80s anyway...and I was a child of the 80s. The question posed: What did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be a scientist, but after my second year of graduate school I decided it sucked a big one so I got my masters and joined the workforce...now I have no clue :-/
Subject: Re: What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to paint pub signs!?! Bizarre but true! Also a travel agent and briefly a vet.
Subject: Re: What did you want to be when you grew up?
I considered veterinary medicine at one point...but I didn't take enough animal biology classes as an undergrad. Darn you, system! Darn you!!!

I wanted to be an archaeologist or a vet..now I'm just someone who has a lot of replicas of greek, celtic, and roman stuff and a bunch of cats!
Subject: Re: What did you want to be when you grew up?
My hope was to become a radio DJ and also thought of becoming a school teacher. Radio is hard to break into and school teching involves young people and I really don't like them much. ;D
Subject: Re: What did you want to be when you grew up?
I don't know.I wanted at first to be an Ice Cream man but I think I would eat all the profits. ;D and I also thought of becoming a singer, but that flopped. -howard-
Subject: Re: What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a teacher. I still do, actually, I just have to get my butt back into school.
Subject: Re: What did you want to be when you grew up?
Well, while applying to college, I had to decide between going to school in New York to get a degree in Paranomal Sciences or going to school in Maryland majoring in English Education. Maryland won out but I didn't become a teacher. The only thing I have always wanted to be my whole life (and I am) is a writer.

I'm very glad you got to live your dream :) Keep on truckin'!

I have always wanted to be an author, ever since I was around eight or nine-years-old. I never wanted to be anything else and, luckily, I'm a published author today! :)

Well done then 80sTrivia !
I wanted to be a Train Driver. I think my chance has passed me by..... :(
FB ;)
Subject: Re: What did you want to be when you grew up?
I always wanted to be a Radio DJ, from the time I was 7 years old. When I graduated HS in '88, I got my chance and jumped in. And in '93 I gave it up, because the industry was switching to satellite feeds everywhere, competition was too fierce, and a family couldn't be raised on part-time jobs. Very disheartening.
Now I at least have my own radio show on the internet! :D
Subject: Re: What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a doctor but then I decided that blood made me want to hurl.
Subject: Re: What did you want to be when you grew up?
I started out wanting to be a veterinarian. Until I found out I would also have to deal with poop, barf, and blood. :-X :-X :-X
Then, I decided I wanted to be a costume designer for the music and film industry. That didn't work out either; my high-school sewing teacher insisted I couldn't be taught how to do anything because I am left-handed. >:( >:(
(I have since taken a neighborhood sewing class taught by a left-handed teacher. I can't make clothes from scratch {yet}, but I can make decent repairs, and take tucks in something that is half-a-size too big.)
When I got my GED, I found I had a talent for accounting, so that's what I studied in college. Shocked the daylights out of my old teachers. I used to hate math, and could never figure out algebra. ::) ::) ::) ::)
Subject: Re: What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be 8) Boba Fett, or Han Solo :D (to kiss :-* princess Leia!) But then again. I must be the the shallowest guy around, I would have loved to be an airline pilot, race car driver or baseball player. Guess I'll have to settle to race vintage cars in my middle 30's (very early midlife crisis!!) thank you for reading, Be good y'all!!
Subject: Re: What did you want to be when you grew up?
I remember in the 5th grade I wanted to be a marine biologist.
My daughter wants to be "a McDonald's worker, babysitter, and a plastic surgeon".
My son wants to be a Power Ranger.
Subject: Re: What did you want to be when you grew up?
I don't remember if I had any actual ideas when I was a child.
As a teen, though - and you can see this by my 2 SAT summaries - I had multiple things on my mind. Most prominently I thought of being either a veterinarian, or an engineer (mechanical, as it turned out, cuz I love machines and thought that's what it means). But I squelched the vet idea, cuz frankly, I didn't want to have to go to school endlessly. Vets, doctors, lawyers - way too much school. Not to mention, I'm not so great w/guts and torn-up bloody tissues and all.
(To the "barf" comment - ironically I don't have much trouble w/animal vomit and them doing it. But I absolutely hate humans vomiting not to mention the product itself; it makes me want to puke myself or faint or run away! I'd make a great parent not to mention doctor! I really, really hate it! I'm totally phobic - including about myself feeling ill!)

Why, thank you FB!!! :) Actually, it took me a while before I was able to support myself as a writer. So, I was a Spanish teacher for a while before I got my big break!!! :)

Absolutely nothing wrong with being left-handed...though I think my parents beat the left-handedness out of me, that might sorta explain why I eat and write with my right hand but play sports with my left hand...hmmm

Actually, I wanted to be a railroad engineer, because I have always lived near train tracks all my life and I'm still obsessed with trains. But I figured there was really no career in that…

When my older brother was in school, being left-handed was considered "bad" for some reason. They literally tied his left hand down to force him to learn to use his right hand. He is now almost perfectly ambidextrous (he can write, toss a ball, or whatever, equally well with either hand).
When I got to school, teachers were no longer allowed to use any kind of force, so most just "gave up" on the left-handed kids. I had more gosh-darned fun naming all the geniuses and rocket scientists who are/were left-handed when I got any flak.
My daughter is left-handed, and now the prevailing attitude in the school is "that's the way the child was born, it's up to us to figure out how to do the best job to teach her/him".
Right now she wants to be a mommy, a Pokemon Trainer and a Veterinarian.
Subject: Re: What did you want to be when you grew up?
Wow, I'm a year older than you and when I was a kid it was not a big deal in our school system, I think they had adopted the " born with it okay" attitude here already. I have no idea why it was ever thought to be a problem.

When I was young, and until maybe 15 years ago, that was the attitude here too. Change lefties in righties.
Talk about something that makes NO sense at all..... ???
Now as you say, fortunately it doesn't happen any longer.
I play (played) soccer left-footed. You would be amazed at the number of people who thought then (and still mention) that it was 'strange'.

Subject: Re: What did you want to be when you grew up?
When I was really little I wanted to be a pop star. How quickely that faded away! I wanted to be a teacher for so many years after that phase, and now I have a part time job with kids. But I don't think I could do that forever.
I found my passion for writing about 4, 5 years ago, and ever since I've wanted to get into popular culture and journalism, but specifically music journalism would be fanatastic. All I have to do now is get into Uni - but my first choice (Broadcast Journalism at Nottingham) needs 2 A's and a B and competition is fierce - but I'm sure all hell gonna try!! :)
Subject: Re: What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a witch when I was little. I watched "the worst witch" (which i had on tape) every day and converted my backyard playhouse into my "witch house" where I had glass containers filled will grass, berries, strange-colored leaves and other things. I also took a large (and very, very old) book which was a collection of Shakespeare's plays and read from Macbeth (crudely) upon my "cauldron".
Not to mention the hours I would spend in the bathtub making "potions" out of the different shampoos and body washes. I was also a big fan of "Teen Witch".
Subject: Re: What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a ballerina, then a teacher, then a social worker, and then I was going to be a nurse....none of which I would like to do now. I'd really like to work with the deaf in some way, or work with teen mothers, maybe a psychologist or something...
Subject: Re: What did you want to be when you grew up?
I still haven't decided what I want to be when I grow up. lol
Actually, as a kid, I wanted to be an actress in the worst way. Yes, I did study acting, dance, voice, worked summer stock etc. That faded. When I decided to go back to school, I thought a teacher. I got my teaching certification but decided it wasn't for me. I thought about being a professional student but got burnt out trying to get my masters (in History) and still haven't finished. I thought about being a writer. I have written some stuff but never figured out how to get them published (besides letters to the editor). So after thinking long and hard, I have decided that what I want to be when I grow up is rich and to be my own boss. That is not asking too much, is it?

When I was like 6 and 7 years old even and someone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I answered with a completely straight face "Spiderman". I really thought it was a possibility back then. sweet.

Me too!! I got 2 scholarships when I graduated high school for broadcasting...but I never did it...I was talked out of radio early on by a DJ at a local station...and when I went to apply to be a music teacher they wouldn't accept me at the local college because I couldn't play a wind instrument!! I was angry!! So I became an actor/musician instead! Not to mention my 11 years as a travel agent!
Subject: Re: What did you want to be when you grew up?
No more travel agent? Now is definatley not the time to pusue them, I coordiante a lot of travel for the company I work for and we have cut down on travle agencies a book most online now. Most our travel is to Alakska and Alaska AIr has a great site that is customized to our business.
Local Raido DJ talked you out it? That was pretty straighfoward of him. Tough world, no money until in a big market and stations changing the format so often you don't know if you have a job from week to week.
Good luck on the acting and music.

My 5 year old daughter wants to be Spiderman. I dont think Mommy can survive that though. I put her in the bathtub the other day and then turned around to get a towel out of the closet and she was upside down with her hands in the water and her feet on the wall yelling "im spider girl"
and then there was the time a couple of weeks ago when she came hurtling down the hallway screaming "ill get your green goblin" and wrapped her arms around my legs and knocked me on the floor"
