Subject: Popular food from the 1980s
I work at a community center that is having an 80s night, and I'm wondering what food was popular during that time period that we could serve.
Subject: Re: Popular food from the 1980s
You weren't around then? It's not like people were eating that differently 13 years ago.
Subject: Re: Popular food from the 1980s
LOL! I think the best way to put it, G-Bomb, would be to ask, "what food DID NOT exist in the '80s, so we aren't inaccurate?" :D It also may depend on where you live - what country, even what region. But generally - what Paul said. ;)

I'm sure you mean what particular kinds of foods were fashionable in the 80s.
S'mores and Rice Krispy Treats were popular off the top of my head. TV Dinners were eaten a lot, I understand (we didn't at my house).
Here's a link to some food fads in the 80s:
http://www.inthe80s.com/food.shtml
Some of these are no longer available, but you might make your own substitutes. One thing to consider is to try not to serve something that was not around yet, like Lemon Diet Coke.

There was something called "California Cuisine" during that decade.
I think it involved tropical fruit among other things and involved a presetation style.

Speaking of stuff to eat and drink from the 80's, does anyone else remember Apple Slice? I had one once and it was great, then they stopped making it a day later.

how about Califronia Raisons? They were big in the 80s.
And how about a big bowl of Nerds candy? Were those from the 80s? I remember eating those for the first time in grade school.
And JHC, no I never knew they had Apple Slice. I used to looove Orange Slice, funny though, I can't stand it today. Maybe I had too much of it.

Yeah, I remember going to camp and having a nerd fight on the last night in our cabin, and spending 2 hours the next morning cleaning up melted nerds off EVERYTHING. That's when I stopped eating them.
On a good note, did you guys know they still sell pop rocks? I remember when they took those off the market, because they were dangerous or something.
Now I have my pop rocks back, when can I have my lawn darts ???

JHC, why can't they leave the good stuff alone? I had forgotten Apple Slice for 15 or 20 years, if I remember it was very flavorful but not overly sweet. It was great to wash Cool Ranch Doritios again when they were still a fresh new product. Thank God (or Jesus?) they're still around. Course now I can wash them down with beer, mmm beer.

Lolly Gobble Bliss Bombs.

Kudos were very *in* in the snack category in the 80's.
Subject: Re: Popular food from the 1980s
It seems that foods of the '80's best remembered come in the candy or junk food variety.
Speaking of...
McDonalds has done some stupid stuff over the years, a short lived 80's thing was the McDlt, remeber hot side hot, cool side cool?
Stuff to remeber in the future of this subject is the "salad shaker", who the hell eats salad from a plastic cup? And what was the deal with that "adult burger" idea, can't even remeber the name, just that the marketing campaign managed to alianate kids and adults by insulting them both. If you were a kid you were told that it wasn't a place for kids anymore to enjoy, if you were an adult you got to feel stupid cause you had been eating kid food.
Dumb!

Apple Slice, mmmm, carbonated apple cider, you can't beat it.

I was thinking of that when I started reading your post. This is soooooo stupid! I mean, what do you do? Are you supposed to eat it minus dressing, or are you supposd to put it in there and shake it to get it all wet? But you still have to use a fork; I don't think dumping lettuce pieces down your mouth works too well! So it's not like it's a great "fast" food idea! Duh! ???
Subject: Re: Popular food from the 1980s
Oh my gosh. Something makes SOOO much sense now. When I was little my mom taped Dumbo off of the television and got only PART of a commercial with it and it was a McDonalds commercial where the jingle was "you get a quarter pound of beef on the hot hot side ,and the hot stays hot, big D, fresh lettuce and tomato on the cool cool side, and the cool stays cool, lt. The beef stays hot, the cool stays crisp, its the hottest taste....." and I dont know what was after that cause thats where the commercial cut back into Dumbo. But now I know what thats from.

I remember, as a child, eating a lot of tinned Spaghetti shapes. I think they were called things like 'Haunted House' and 'Space Invaders'.
Now they are merchandised to whatever is fashionable for the moment.

i recall, i think it was in '87 when mcdonald's had some asian variety to their mcnuggets. i remember eating mcnuggets with chopsticks and dipping them in teriyaki sauce. vaguly recall the commercials too.
does count chockula still exist? because i remember two other monster cereals that i ate as a kid. one was frankenberry(?) and the other booberry(?)
Subject: Re: Popular food from the 1980s
I also remember the yoghurts called 'Fiendish Feet'. The pots had drawings of monsters on them like 'Spooky Wooky' (I think) and 'Rattle and Roll'.
Subject: Re: Popular food from the 1980s
The "Adult Burger" after the DLT was the Arch Deluxe -- specially seasoned beef patty, with a secret sauce, on a potato bread bun... And they kept it a secret for almost a year, but they'd mention it but not what it was. I think I was the only kid who liked them.
The "monster cereals" are back, Count Chocula was the last to be brought back... they we're "too violent and amoral" for children
anyone remember the Nintendo fad... there were the little jelly candies, and pastas, and even cereal with the catch phrase "Nintendo. It's a cereal now!" to the beat and tune of the underground Super Mario Levels.
and Zotz! candy... they were intensely sour little white wormy looking things... no one else seems to remember them, then they made a different kind that was a candy with the white stuff inside.
Fruit Roll-Ups were big...
and Slimer Green Kool-Aid... or if you got your kool-aid in the little boxes, it was the before mentioned Ecto-Cooler. And the green Kool-Aid was big. As was color change Kool-Aid, which is re-released now.

WOW - Apple Slice was one of favorites! I was sad when it left. I worked at Sav-On Drugs during the '80s and was privy to all the sodas that came out. One favorite of mine was Nesbitt's Cream Soda. YUM. Another was 7UP Gold. Anyone remember that? It was a spice-flavored soda that was sooooooo good. I also remember when Coke did a special series of 16oz., Max Headroom cans. And does anyone remember the Pepsi "SEX" cans?

Subject: Re: Popular food from the 1980s
If you are doing 80's food, there is one thing I have not seen mentioned yet, that is mandatory:
Quiche!!!!!!!!
Let's not forget all the "Real Men Don't Eat Quiche" bumperstickers, books, t-shirts, etc. That was a running joke also on a lot of TV shows of the time.
ANd of course, you can't mention McDonalds in the 1980's without the classic "Mac Tonight" ads. The man with the moon chaped head, who sings "Mack The Knife" with words about McDonalds and the Big Mac. The Mac Meal would be the grandfather of the current "Value Meals". I think the campaign ran from 1985 till around 1986, and was brought back shortly in the early 90's, right before the new "Value Meal" system came out.
If you want some reminders of this and are in the Southern California area, visit the McDonalds on Beach Blvd, just south of where Knott's Berry Farm. THere are several posters and other things from that campaign in the resteraunt.
Other classic 80's foods, some of which are no longer around:
Space Sticks: Inspired by NASA, were these chocolate sticks, chewy and about the size of a Mont Blanc pen. Kids loved them, and were fortefied to give them an alternative to candy. THink of it as a pre-cursor to the power bars.
Magic Shell: This was a topping for ice cream. I remember chocolate and butterscotch flavors. You poured it on ice cream, and it made a hard crunchy shell.
Pizzaz Pizza: Taco bell, now called either a "Mexican Pizza" or "Taco Pizza", I can't remember which. This was big around 1985 or so.
New Coke: This is long gone, kind of like a Pepsi-Coke combination.
Pepsi Free: Caffeine-free diet Pepsi. Memorable from the first Back To The Future movie, but unless you were around at the time, you would not get the reference.
Bartles & Jaymes Wine Coolers: The original Green one, not the flavors that followed later. And we thank you for your support.
Gummy Anything: Gummy Bears, Gummy Worms, even Gummy Rats (Remember the female commander in V eating the rat?)
Jello Pudding Anything: Come on, Bill Cosby, do we need to say anything else?
Jelly Belly: Gourmet jelly beans, made famous because they were the favourite candy of President Reagan.
I hope that is a good start. :)

i was about to mention the new coke! glad you remember the back to the future pepsi ad. I saw the movie when it was at the theater and they had a competition that if we filled a form saying which scene Pepsi appears, we would get back to the future souvenirs (t-shirts, stickers etc) as well pepsi.
There was also grape FANTA, it was my fave.
Ok, considering that I'm from Brazil, i can't add much stuff about prepackaged foods, cereals, candies etc, we did pretty much everything there back then, of course with some multinationals, so probably we had same products withe different names... but i never ate much junk back then.
The only splurging was often visits to the awesome mcdonald (hey, i was a kid, ok?) that just arrived in my neighbourhood in Rio de Janeiro. It was in front of my school!
anyway, there were other 80s typical foods there too. "prato de verão" which was a plate full of tropical fruits pieces and one or two slices of turkey ham and cheese rolled in a fancy way. It was really cool. Also the sporty, fitness era was very IN so we had loads of tropical smoothies concotions, things like carrot, beets and orange juice, well you get the picture! but the most popular of all these 80s foods in Brazil would be "sanduíche natural", or natural sandwich, that was the super fitness meal around, sold specially at the beaches. It was whole grain sliced bread, served with a crazy salad usually made with mayo, yogurt, tuna and some veggies, i can't remember the mix, but it was a success, very good!
Another fad was selling frozen foods to business people or catering for parties. My grandma had a friend that worked with that and it sold well.
Talking about business people, didn't everyone remember that the super IN food was sushi? all yuppies movies or articles I have mention that one!! even on Madonna's movie "desperately seeking susan", there is a cab driver that talks about it. Also i think it's the coolest when she eats Cheez Doodles (sp?) or her roomate eats Doritos. Those chips were new for us brazilians, back then.
Thanks for the memories!

Hi,
Well when I was stationed over in Germany we ate a lot of red hot sauced whole chickens rotesserie style and Gyro's.
Also, I believe corn on the cob BBQ in tin foil was in.
Yeah we called it "Tin Foil", not aluminum foil.
Shishkabob swewers were the thing as well.
