Subject: 80's Sitcoms Good then, but Horrible now.

Written By: Screwball54 on 09/28/02 at 11:25 p.m.

I was a big fan of certain 80's sitcoms in the 80's but now it seems like I can't believe I watched them.  Granted I was pretty young in the 80's but could I really have not noticed how dumb they were?

sitcoms I hate now but liked then:
Who's the boss
Mama's family
Charles in charge
Full House

Sitcomes I liked then and still like now:
Family ties
Cheers
Taxi

Can anyone list other sitcomes that you loved then, but can't even watch now do to their stupid nature.

Here is my list of shows I don't care for anymore:

Alf
Facts of Life
Different Strokes
Just the ten of us
The Ropers
Three's a Crowd
Webster

Shows I still like:

Three's Company (I know it is a very corny show but I still love it)
Perfect Strangers
Bosom Buddies
Mork and Mindy
One Day At A Time
I miss the Young Ones....the british comedy they aired on MTV.  So weird and strange it was great!!!!

I really liked Alf as a kid but I could not watch an episode today! It's just not funny! I also used to watch A Different World then but I caught an episode recently and it was just a bad show, period!!! :)

I feel the same way about those 4 shows.  I used to love them in the '80s, but they are just way too stupid and campy to watch now.  Though I think I stopped watching the long running Full House series sometime in 1993 or '94.  When D.J. became an older teenager and started getting more mature and responsible, she was no longer funny, and I never cared for the other girl or those two Olsen babies.

Here are some other shows I used to love but can't watch now:

Perfect Strangers
Mr. Belvedere
Webster
ALF
Facts of Life
Gimme a Break
The Love Boat
Different Strokes (probably because I keep thinking about how crazy the cast became)

Here are '80s sitcoms that I think are so well made, they still hold up for me:

Family Ties
Night Court
Growing Pains
The Cosby Show
Three's Company
Cheers

Shows from the 80's I used to watch but not watch now: Alf, Who's The Boss, Full House, Webster, and Cosby Show. Shows I can still watch: Different Strokes, A Different World, Growing Pains, and Threes Company. In conclusion some shows age well and some don't.

I know it's not a sitcom, and it's probably late seventies, but I ordered the TimeLife collection of Muppet Shows? Yeah. They are not remotely as magical and entrancing as I remember. Broke my heart.

Still loves me mah "Simpsons" though...

I still love "The Simpsons" too, and I wish the show it started on, "The Tracey Ullman Show", was still on the air.

The early FOX network ... ah, those were the days...

Never liked "ALF".  I tried to watch "Different World" then but while it was OK, was never that great.

I could never watch "Full House".  I liked the brothers alright (esp. the blonde   ;D), but that father guy irks me.  My revulsion was confirmed seeing him on that "Funniest Videos" show.  Stupid comments and I wasn't crazy about his demeanor.  I mean, he seems like basically a nice guy but not entertainment material in my view.

Now that I think of it, even then I rarely watched TV.  I see these shows listed here and can only think how I didn't watch 80% of them.

The shows I mostly recall and still watch today are "Cosby Show" and "Golden Girls".  But I obviously missed the last gasps of Cosby.  I've seen some lately that I never saw - they had that kid in them as well as the twin babies.

That's the other thing - bringing some young kid never in the show before is the death knell of said show.  It's either a new baby, or some adopted kid.  It never fails.

That is exactly the point of www.jumptheshark.com , the moment in a television show when it starts going downhill.  :)
