Subject: Bone-Phone??

Written By: Bill Baumgartner on 09/26/02 at 10:32 a.m.

Does anyone remember a radio that came out in the early 80's called the "Bone-Phone"? It looked like a long sock that you would drape over your shoulders and it had a FM tuner. When you wore it and turned it on it would send sound vibrations thru your body without the need for head phones. You could wear it anywhere no one else could hear the music but you.
I know, lottsa drugs in the 70's but this was real, I think?!?
Thanx,
Buffalo Bill

I remember it.  Seemed that it was really quiet unless you had it draped on you.

I actually remember this item.

The "Bone Phone" was sold by DAK Industries.  DAK was a kind of a forerunner of Sharper Image.  They sold innovative and unique gadgets, mostly through mail order.

The ads were in a great many magazines in the bid 70's till the early 90's.  All of the ads featured a clear photo of the item, plus ad copy that was written by Drew Kaplan (the owner of DAK, Drew Andrew Kaplan).

The Bone Phone came out about the same time as the Walkman did.  It was about 3' long, and a little bigger around then a pack of cigarettes.  It was flexible, with a cloth covering (I seem to remember it was blue).

You draped it over your shoulders, and the "bone" part was kind of like a speaker with the cone removed.  This would vibrate, and the sound was trnasmitted through the wearer's collar bone.  YOu could turn it way up, and not have to worry about disturbing people next to you, since no actual "sound" came from it.  They were popular with skiiers, but because of the cost (I seem to remember they started at around $75) they never caught on with the kids like the Walkman did.

They made versions that were AM, AM/FM, and AM/FM/cassette tape.  They are long gone now, but it is something I remember fondly, I wish I knew where I could still get one.  :)

DAK is still in business, if anybody is curious, they are at

DAK was also a major reason for the CD-ROM in computers.  WHen they still ran $500+ in the early 1990's, DAK sold a CD-ROM, sound card, and interface card along with 10 CDs for about $200.  A major price drop, which allowed tens of thousands of people to buy them.  It was this competition that brought the price way down.

LMAO - I remember DAK, I bought this stupid air machine from them, was supposed to generate happy neurons or some bologna, don't think it worked especially on my ex-wife.

Ahhh, you bought an "Air Ionizer".  Funny thing is, Sharper Image is selling one now, I see the commercials on TV every time I turn it on.  They charge something like $300 for it.  They call it the Psyonic Breeze, or something like that.

I wonder where one might find this 'bone-phone', by DAK. thrift store? antique shop? I'm sure there are still a few geeks floating around who have kept stuff like this. I think it'd be funny just to try it out.

I invested in these back in the late 70's.  I still have a couple of cases of them round somewhere.  I even have different colored sleeves for them.  I have both the cassette/am/fm and just plain am/fm ones.  They actually work pretty good.  The Walkman jsut killed sales though.
