Subject: "Do Over", Show Set During 80s...
The new comedy set during the 80s, Do Over is set to make its premiere this week. Here's some more info:

Premieres September 19, 8:30/7:30c
Now, back in 1981 with his 34-year-old mind trapped in his 14-year-old body, Joel (newcomer Penn Badgley) has the unique opportunity to make things turn out differently, both for him and his embarrassingly dysfunctional family. The ultimate wish-fulfillment comedy, Do Over proves that sometimes it does take a boy to do a man's job. Josh Wise, Angela Bethany Goethals (Storytelling), Gigi Rice (The John Larroquette Show), Michael Milhoan (Something So Right) and Natasha Melnick (Freaks and Geeks) also star.

after "That 80s Show" I cringe whenever I hear of a new show set during the 80s.. let's hope this is like Freaks and Geeks (high quality) but a little more popular than Freaks and Geeks was..

I know what you mean, Chucky. But I think this show will be vastly superior to the egregiously awful That 80s Show. Here's a short review I found in Star magazine:
Quoting:"This adorable little comedy tells the story of a 34-year-old loser who gets a chance to be 14 again and goes back to high school so he can turn his life around. Not only is this series more entertaining that the similarly themed That Was Then on ABC, this show has a lot more laughs!"End Quote
I'm hopeful! :)

I don't imagine too many people will be watching. This show is on against the premiere of Survivor: Thailand... :-[

;D Survivor sucks! 80's rule! I'm watching Do Over.

It's on Right Now and It's Actually Pretty Good.

The show was a little weird, but I liked it. It reminded me a little of Wonder Years for some reason. I hope they don't over-exaggerate the 80s references. They did a pretty good job of not overdoing the stereotypes in the premier.
Unfortunately I will be busy on Thursdays for the next couple of months, so I'll try to tape it. I'll be taping Smallville anyway.

I liked it! Definitely far better than That 80s Show! The lead actor has a natural charm. Just a few anachronisms, such as the fact that Wham!'s "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" was playing on the alarm radio when the main character woke up, and the show is set in 1981. ("Wake Me Up" came out in '84) All in all, I felt that it was an enjoyable show and plan on watching it again!

I also saw in the preview for next week's episode that Joel lets the cat out of the bag that Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker's father. Well, in 1981 we already knew that Vader was Luke's old man. "The Empire Strikes Back" was released in 1980. I hope they mention "Revenge of the Jedi" since that's what we thought the last Star Wars movie would be called. In fact, I'm sure I had a "Revenge of the Jedi" patch from the Star Wars Fan Club.
Anyway, I suspect this show is going to be like "Happy Days" in that it represents all of the 80s, not just one year. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with it.

Luckily, I'm not a musical purist, so I don't have a problem with the show using music from a later time frame in the 80s as part of the soundtrack. Another example from the show is that everytime the main character sees the girl of his dreams at school, Dead or Alive's "You Spin Me 'Round (Like a Record)" plays. Now, we all know that song is definitely not from 1981! The music from about 1983 on completely changed and has a vastly different vibe and energy to it! So, I think the creators and producers of the show should have set the show later on in the 80s if they wanted that particular vibe to the program. Then again, perhaps the producers thought the show might click with viewers and wanted the show set in the early-80s in case the show lasted a while!

Last night's episode of Do Over was quite good! I loved the references to Lionel Ritchie's "Hello" video! And the music was great, especially the choice of Oingo Boingo's "Dead Man's Party" when the main character was headed off to fight the bully. And I liked the scene with Darth Vader and the Storm Troopers! Funny!!! ;D

Am I the only one who noticed this?
I'm almost positive that in the premier of "Do Over" when the coach asked Joel what year it was, the coach said that it was 1981. Afterwards, in this topic thread, a few of us commented about things in the show that were not around in 1981, and I mentioned that the big secret Joel was going to reveal about "Empire Stikes Back" was already known in 1981.
This week, when they showed recaps from the premier, the coach clearly said the year was 1980. Did they change this or were we just victims of faulty memories to begin with?
I think they changed the year when they realized some of their continuity errors. Would someone who taped the premier clear this up for us? :)

Has anyone else noticed non-80s expressions used in the 80s flashback show "Do Over"?
A couple of weeks ago the mother used the term "male bonding" and she said something else in the same episode that I thought was modern, but I forgot it.
This week, the pretty, blonde girl that Joel likes said she was having a "bad hair day."
Does anyone remember those expressions being used in the early 80s? I don't.
I like the show, but it's fun to catch mistakes.
