Subject: What was the saddest 80's song........
I thought the saddest 80's song was "Please don't go", but i don't know who sung this or if it was an 80's tune. But yeah, it was really sad! :P

I think Forever Young by Alphaville is sad. It was prom theme the year 4 kids got killed in an car accident trying to jump train tracks. It happened 2 weeks before prom....not cool.

Subject: Re: What was the saddest 80's song........
My "favorite" sad song of the 80s was "Twist In My Sobriety" by Tanita Tikaram.
Subject: Re: What was the saddest 80's song........
I loved Kenny Rogers when I was a younger child of the 80s, and I always thought his "Coward of the County" was a sad song. :'(
Subject: Re: What was the saddest 80's song........
"I've Never Been To Me" by Charlene was pretty sad.
Subject: Re: What was the saddest 80's song........
I would chose "What About Me?" by Moving Pictures and "When the Children Cry" by White Lion for my top 80s weepers... :'(
Subject: Re: What was the saddest 80's song........
"Luka" - Suzanne Vega... I've heard this song many, many times and it still gets me all choked up. :'(
Subject: Re: What was the saddest 80's song........
"Drive" The Cars - that one tears me up all the time...especially the video.
Subject: Re: What was the saddest 80's song........
For me, it would have to be - "I want to know what love is". It came at a time when I was going trhough some rough times with my High School sweetheart. Dag it, did it ever hurt and the song knew everything that was going on in my head/heart.
Subject: Re: What was the saddest 80's song........
I have plenty of songs from the 80's that are sad, but I'll list some:
"Africa" by Toto
"New Year's Day" by U2
"I Need Love" by LL Cool J
"Take These Broken Wings" by Mr. Mister
"Don't Dream It's Over" can't remember the artist
I can go on.
Subject: Re: What was the saddest 80's song........
The Cars "Drive" can still make me cry
Subject: Re: What was the saddest 80's song........
One that gets under my skin is "In too Deep" by Phil Collins :'(
Subject: Re: What was the saddest 80's song........
I would have to say "Just Once" by James Ingram; especially when you hear it at the end of "The Last American Virgin."
Subject: Re: What was the saddest 80's song........
I have to agree with 80sTrivia and say "When The Children Cry" by White Lion...which, if you listen to it now means SO much more since 9/11....
Subject: Re: What was the saddest 80's song........
Saddest song of this 80´ hmmm.
Try listen to Phil Collins "Against All Odds" or Wham "Blue" - the
live version from China with the lyrics.

Subject: Re: What was the saddest 80's song........
"Whirlpool Heart" by the Wild Swans. It is about a middle-aged guy struggling to relive his lost youth. :'(Too bad he will never retrieve it. Very Jungian, I say.
???
Stupid of me to feel so depressed for I'm just 21! ;D
TEXTYeah!
Subject: Re: What was the saddest 80's song........
"Drive" - Cars < This is the most sad song in this world, but i could say "How soon is now?" - Smiths (There's a club if you'd like to go, you could meet somebody who really loves you, so you go and you stand on your own, and you leave in your own, and you go home and you cry and want to die)

Yes, but I think the topic heading means sad as in sorrowful, not sad as in pathetic.
;D
Subject: Re: What was the saddest 80's song........
I agree with all mentioned, even "Africa" by Toto just because of the nostalgia involved and I'll even add "Don't Answer Me" by The Alan Parson's Project for the same reason.
The saddest, in my opinion, is "Lucille" by Kenny Rogers:
Album Title: Lady
Date of Release 1981
Subject: Re: What was the saddest 80's song........
:'( My "fave" semi-sad 80s songs, yet kinda mediocre:
Cutting Crew "I Just Died in Your Arms Tonight"

Def Leppard "Love Bites"
Def Leppard "Photograph"
Def Leppard "Hysteria"
Styx "Don't Ket It End"
Phil Collins "In the Air Tonight"
Phil Collins "I Don't Care Anymore"
Mr. Big "To Be with You"
Scorpions "Still Loving You" (Used to make me cry, BION!)
Michael Jackson "Human Nature"
Michael Jackson "Smooth Criminal"
Thompson Twins "Hold Me Now"
U2 "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For"
U2 "New Year's Day"

Queen/David Bowie/Vanilla Ice "Under Pressure"
New Kids on the Block "You Got It (The Right Stuff)"
Tina Turner "What's Love Got to Do with It"
Bryan Adams "Heaven"
Aerosmith "Janie's Got a Gun"
That's all I got for now. :'(

My dad and I danced to "Daddy's Girl" at my wedding, very cool song.

Subject: Re: What was the saddest 80's song........
I thought "Second Chance" by .38 Special and "Love Theme" (instrumental) from St. Elmo's Fire were fairly sad.

Subject: Re: What was the saddest 80's song........
I nominate these:
The Cars - Drive
Crowded House - Don't Dream It's Over
Loads of songs by The Smiths - especially 'I Know It's Over', 'Unloveable', 'Never Had No-One Ever' seriously, the list could go on, but I'm not gonna name about 30 tracks by them ;D
Edited to add: I can't belive I almost forgot a MAJOR track - 'Do They Know It's Christmas' by Band Aid. Mind you, people may believe its lost its sentiment, beacuse of the amount of airplay it gets from November until Dec 25th!
Subject: Re: What was the saddest 80's song........
I'd have to vote for Me And Little Andy by Dolly Parton. I think it was very early 80s. It's about this little girl who knocks on a lady's door during a blizzard and begs the woman to take her and her puppy dog in because her Dad's out drinking somewhere and her mother left them again. In the end, the little girl and the puppy die in their sleep after the lady takes them in and gives them a bed. It's a beautiful/terrible song. :(
OK, found it, it's 1977, but I'm still using it, so there! :p
Me And Little Andy
(Dolly Parton)
Late one cold and stormy night I heard a dog a' barkin'
Then I thought I heard somebody at my door a' knockin'
I wondered who could be outdide in such an awful storm
Then I saw a little girl with a puppy in her arms
Before I could say a word she said, 'My name is Sandy
And this here is my puppy dog, it's name is little Andy'
Standing in the bitter cold in just a ragged dress
Then I asked her to come in and this is what she said
Ain't ya got no gingerbread
Ain't ya got no candy
Ain't ya got an extra bed for me and little Andy
Patty cake and bakersman
My mommy ran away again
And we was all alone and didn't know what else to do
I wonder if you'll let us stay with you
Giddy up trotty horse, going to the mill
Can we stay all night
If you don't love us no one will
I promise we won't cry
London bridge is fallin' down
My daddy's drunk again in town
And we was all alone and didn't what we could do
I wonder if you'll let us stay with you
She was just a little girl, not more than six or seven
But that night as they slept the angels took them both to heaven
God knew little Andy would be lonesome with her gone
Now Sandy and her puppy dog won't ever be alone
Ain't ya got no gingerbread
Ain't ya got no candy
Ain't ya got an extra bed for me and little (whispers) Andy

And I thought Kenny Roger's "Lucille" was bad.
Subject: Re: What was the saddest 80's song........
Isn't it just as I said? She (Dolly) once said that a man once told her: "It's not bad enough you killed the girl but you had to kill the dog, too?!" I can still hear her singing in that little girl voice to all the little girl parts..... :(
If you want to have a song that stays with you, as this one does because of the death of my father, please listen to (80s, of course! ) "I Guess It Never Hurts To Hurt Sometimes" by the Oak Ridge Boys. Lyrics:
Sometimes I feel a wave
Of the past break in my mind
And I know it's gone for good
And it makes me want to cry
Is this all we get to keep
As the years go rollin' by?
Just a memory
For all the days gone by.
Oh, you're always in my heart
And you're often on my mind
I will never let it die
Just as long as I'm alive
Sometimes it makes me sad
That we never said goodbye
Oh I guess it never hurts
To hurt sometimes.
You try and hold on to the moment
But time won't let you stay
But for every step you take
You lose something on the way
You can't look forward to tomorrow
And still hold on to yesterday
Oh I hope that you can hear me
When I'm saying
(Repeat chorus twice)
the really sad part? I didn't have to look these lyrics up.

Subject: Re: What was the saddest 80's song........
I can't believe this thread got to be three pages long without someone mentioning "One" by Metallica. (yeah, I know everyone's ticked at them for helping to shut down Napster.)
From the second verse:
Now that the war is through with me
I'm waking up. I cannot see
That there's not much left of me.
Nothing is real but pain now.
The video was also sad, and illustrated the horrors of war.
I also think Double's "Captain Of Her Heart" is pretty sad..."Too long ago, too far apart. She couldn't wait another day for the Captain of her heart."
Subject: Re: What was the saddest 80's song........
"Foolish beat" from Debbie Gibson.
Subject: Re: What was the saddest 80's song........
Oh, it's gotta be Chicago's "hard habit to break"
"bein' without you

I could learn to live with it
but I don't want to
being without you
is all a big mistake..."
etc.

One that always makes me cry is
"I should have known better" by Jim Diamond. From England I think...
Per Gessle, of Roxette, made some songs with his old band "Gyllen Tider", that were pretty sad to... But I guess they are only known localy here in Sweden..."Billy" is one of them...

When did Wind Beneath My Wings come out? The first time I remember hearing it was in 89 I *think*. I was in elementary school (cant remember what grade) but we read this book called "The Pinballs" about foster children. It was a fiction story but one of the projects that went with the book was that we had to choose a song that represented each of the characters in the book and that was one of the songs we chose...weird the things we remember

Speaking of John Farnham, "Touch Of Paradise" was another song I found to be a tear-jerker, although it is probably classed as a love song, there is something about the mood and tempo that makes it a sad song for me. :'(

Almost blue
Almost doing things we used to do
There's a girl here and she's almost you
Almost
All the things that your eyes once promised
I see in hers too
Now your eyes are red from crying
Almost blue
Flirting with this disaster became me
It named me as the fool who only aimed to be
Almost blue
It's almost touching
It will almost do
There is part of me that's always true
Always
Not all good things come to an end
Now it is only a chosen few
I have seen such an unhappy couple
Almost me
Almost you
Almost blue

I think Forever Young by Alphaville is sad. It was prom theme the year 4 kids got killed in an car accident trying to jump train tracks. It happened 2 weeks before prom....not cool.
End Quote
Back in '94 a good friend of mine had a terrible car accident, the guy in the passenger seat who also worked with us died, my friend who was driving the car is still alive, can't speak, can't walk, can't coordinate, as if he was a little baby his mom takes care of him. He was very successful and we were very young, he helped me get the job I had at the time and we spoke on the phone just a couple hours before his accident, he told me to drive safe cause it was raining a lot. The stereo was one of those removable units, another guy we knew stopped and removed the stereo from the car and my buddies belongings to prevent them from being stolen, before they towed the car away. Somehow the stereo ended up in my hands, and the tape he was playing had that song. I always think of him when I hear it on the radio.
So definitely "Forever young" by Alphaville

"Faithfully" by Journey and anything off of the "Last American Virgin" soundtrack!
Subject: Re: What was the saddest 80's song........
What can be sadder than someone dying and saying goodbye to those he love?
OK, mid-70s.
The saddest song EVER in my opinion (Drum Roll) is:
Terry Jacks: Season in the Sun.
Amazing that people have heard this song for over a quarter of a century, yet do do understand the lyrics.
SEASONS IN THE SUN
Goodbye to you, my trusted friend.
We've known each other since we're nine or ten.
Together we climbed hills or trees.
Learned of love and ABC's,
skinned our hearts and skinned our knees.
Goodbye my friend, it's hard to die,
when all the birds are singing in the sky,
Now that the spring is in the air.
Pretty girls are everywhere.
When you see them I'll be there.
We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun.
But the hills that we climbed
were just seasons out of time.
Goodbye, Papa, please pray for me,
I was the black sheep of the family.
You tried to teach me right from wrong.
Too much wine and too much song,
wonder how I get along.
Goodbye, Papa, it's hard to die
when all the birds are singing in the sky,
Now that the spring is in the air.
Little children everywhere.
When you see them I'll be there.
We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun.
But the wine and the song,
like the seasons, all have gone.
Goodbye, Michelle, my little one.
You gave me love and helped me find the sun.
And every time that I was down
you would always come around
and get my feet back on the ground.
Goodbye, Michelle, it's hard to die
when all the bird are singing in the sky,
Now that the spring is in the air.
With the flowers ev'rywhere.
I whish that we could both be there.
We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun.
But the stars we could reach
were just starfishs on the beach.

I have enjoyed looking at the list of sad songs because I have to think about the lyrics, rather than just remember the music. I agree with most of the comments so far, and I would like to add a few. Saddest song from the 60's and 70's is beyond the scope of this list, however, Theme from Exodus for the 60's and Theme from Ice Castles in the 70's comes to mind. However, I surely thought you would have remembered this one from 1982. It peaked at #61 and was on the pop 100 for 8 whole weeks. Bill Champlin from Chicago. The lyrics are sad enough, but try finding this on CD? I had to order it from Japan and the price made me start crying.
Sara
(Bill Champlin, Allan Thicke)
How could you let me go
The way we've been getting on
I didn't see no sign of trouble
All of a sudden you're gone
How was I meant to know
I left you alone too long
I never thought you needed all of that
Talkin' but I could be wrong
Sara
I'll never forget your name
The woman is gone
But the feeling is here to stay
Sara
The melody will remain
Though you'll be gone
Before the sun goes down
Sara tearin' apart
The heart you turned around
How could you let me go
And whittle your dreams away
I didn't see you leavin' me
Give me a moment to say
How can I let you know
I'm willin' to give it all
I'll gather your tears from all of the years
And catch 'em whenever they fall
I'll catch you whenever you fall

All Cried Out -Lisa Lisa
At This Moment -Billy Vera and the Beaters
Those are both so sad. :'( But I love them. :)
Subject: Re: What was the saddest 80's song........
I just thought of another one...
"Love Look What You've Done to Me" by Boz Scaggs.
(love that scene in Urban Cowboy) ;)
Subject: Re: What was the saddest 80's song........
I would say is James Ingram and Patti Austin's "How do you keep the music playing".
To be honest, i thought the 60's and 70's had a better selection of sad love songs, especially the 60's and early 70's, with Motown, Spinners, Dramatics and Smokey Robinson's "Ooh Baby Baby".
Some other sad ones are:
"Anyone who had a heart" - By Luther Vandross
"Diggin' Your Scene" by the Blow Monkeys (the song was about a friend dying of AIDS)
"Lonely won't leave me alone" by Jermaine Jackson
"Is This Love" by Regina Belle (I think it's early 90's)
"Careless Whispers" by George Michael
"Holding Back The Years" by Simply Red
"At This Moment" by Billy Vera
"Oh No" by The Commodores (another rare 80's video I'm looking for)
These are not sad, but they're good ones:
"There's Nothing Better Than Love" by Luther Vandross & Gregory Hines
"Make Me A Believer" by Luther Vandross
"Hold Me" by Teddy Pendergrass & Whitney Houston
"Just Call My Name" by Alyson Williams (late 80's)
"Falling" by Melba Moore
"Love Is Contagious" by Taja Seville
"Take It To The Limit" by Ray Goodman Brown

Just in case this one hasn't been added yet, I'll nominate:
The Living Years - Mike & The Mechanics

I'm going to sound so stupid when I ask this, but what is the one song that goes "And you want her, and she wants you, we want everyone..."...God I sound so stupid. Don't blame me. I'm 15. That song makes me cry though. It describes how I feel about love.

Night Ranger - Goodbye
"As the sun hides his head
For another night's rest
And the wind sings
His same old song
And you on the edge
Never close, never far
Always there when I needed a friend
But it's hard living life
On this memory-go-round
Always up, always down
Spinning 'round and 'round and 'round
All this could be
Just a dream so it seems
I was never much good at goodbye
There once was a time
Never far from my mind
On the beach, on the 4th of July
I remember the sand
How you held out your hand
And we touched for what seemed a lifetime
But it's hard
Leaving all this behind me now
Like a schoolboy so lost
Never found until now
And all this could be
Just a dream so it seems
I was never much good at goodbye
Yet it's hard
Living life on this memory-go-round
Always up, always down
Turning 'round and 'round and 'round
And all this could be
Just a dream so it seems
I was never much good at goodbye
And all this could be
Just a dream so it seems
I was never much good at goodbye
Goodbye"

Hi there,
I know an extremely sad song from about '83 or '84, that no one seems to remember. It was called 'Call to your Heart' by a band called Giuffria, I believe. It started off:
Can I ever live without your girl
Get back on my feet again
Now I'm lost in your world.
Theres no simple way to let you go
something something something?
something something something?
I still belive in you
Now I call to your heart
Hear me calling to your heart
Darling, you remember
the dreams that we had
I'd give anything in my world
to hold you again
Darling, together we can make it work out
So stay with me baby, I need you now..
Well, you get the picture, it went something like that. It was a great, sad song. I'd love it if anyone remembers this one.

Very good song, reminded me a lot of Journey. The song peaked at #15 on February 9, 1985, and by this week in 1985 it had dropped to #66.
If you're looking to hear it, go to my website listed below and request it. ;D

"I Can Let Go Now" by Michael McDonald
Subject: Re: What was the saddest 80's song........
I first thought the saddest was "If You Remember Me", by Chris Thompson (right?). It's from the movie "The Champ", but it was released in 1979. And maybe the song is sad mostly because of the movie itself. One of the saddest of the 80's and of all times for me is "Private dancer", by Tina Turner.

And there is also "On my own" (Patti LaBelle & Michael McDonald). Wow!!!

I was hoping someone would mention this one. Also, "Coming Around Again" by Carly Simon would be one. Also there was a song called "Mary's Prayer" by Danny Wilson that I remember being really sad when I was like 11. Oh man, "Close Your Eyes Forever" by Ozzy and Lita Ford! Oh another, "Don't Close Your Eyes" by Kix!
Subject: Re: What was the saddest 80's song........
Most of the ones on here could hold the title. Don't think i could add much to this.

Whoah...I didn't see anyone mention "Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Joy Division. Phew! You can feel your whole body start to shut down on that sucker! It's so miserable it sucks the last ounce of spirit from your soul! I LOVE THAT SONG!

HAHAHHA. I was searching this whole thread for that one. I love it for all the same reasons as you.
There is also a song at the end of Desitigration (I think its the last song). It sounds like funeral music. Very depressing.
