Subject: Why was Alternative kept out of the Mainstream?

Written By: Xmutant on 08/22/02 at 06:03 p.m.

I don't like alternative music at all.  I never have.  I just don't "get" it.  Letting alternative into the mainstream back in 1991 with grunge bands such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam seems to be the dividing point for most of us '80s fans.

My question is why was this kept out of the mainstream? (besides the obvious it doesn't sound good answer)  And why was something like it let into everyday radio?

For the same resone that anything unfamiliar is shunned; fear of the unknown.

The emergence of grunge into the mainstream probably arose from the usual disaffection with the mainstram as it existed then (cf. punk vs. disco, disco vs. rock, rock vs. pop, pop vs. crooning etc). Perhaps specifically there was a weariness with too many power ballads, big hair metal and syrupy R&B.

And of course, kids' eternal desire to disrespect anything their elders enjoy ;D
