Subject: '80s are Oldies now?
I see a lot of people write in different places how they are shocked to hear '80s music being played on so called "oldies stations", or stations that only previously played music from decades such as the '50s, '60s, or the latest perhaps the '70s. Now there are reports of the '80s being called oldies.
Is this true? Is it officially seen like the way we look at Elvis, the Beach Boys, and the Beatles? Sometimes when I try to download '80s tunes, I do indeed see them labeled as oldies. I don't want to believe this, but VH-1 Classic airs primarily '80s music videos.
So what is the deal?

Call it "the '80s". Or perhaps "old school". Calling it "old school" or "'80s" is the right way to talk about it. People who grew up back then or liked it will call it either the '80s or old school.
Calling it "retro", or "oldies" is.........well I dunno. Less prefrable, less affectionate. Only some kid who didn't grow up back then, or some older guy who can't let go of the '60s and '70s and never liked the '80s in the first place, would call it oldies or retro. You can always tell if someone really grew up in the 1980s, if they call it "old school or '80s" they grew up back then, if they call it "retro or oldies" they didn't grow up back then.
According to your profile you're 19, so maybey that explains why you have such an indifferent attitude towards this, though I thought kids born in the early '80s wouldn't think that way since you guys did do some kind of growing up back then. To those of us that grew up then and were born before 1980/'81, calling the '80s oldies and/or retro is unpleasant.

you call the 70's or 60's "oldies" ... so how do you think people that grew up then would feel about that...
Subject: Re: '80s are Oldies now?
^No, I didn't.
Anyway, I suppose this was going to happen to every decade sooner or later.
Subject: Re: '80s are Oldies now?
I believe the 80s brought a fresher sound to music than any decade before or since (with the possible exception of the recent techno Renaissance which some despise). This being revisited is a real feeling of the fact that the 80s ARE in fact listened to still today and seen as fresh. And that's why there's currently cover versions of "The Tide Is High" and "Eternal Flame" both in the charts right at this moment. Sure, they're both by the same band, but if we can get these teenybopper kids believing that they're listening to good (ie, eighties) music, then that's got to be a good thing.

As for an oldies station, the oldies station in our area has recently been taken over by another company, therefore bringing to the forefront on the radio eighties music and early nineties music, as well as the previous 60s and 70s that had been exclusive to that station beforehand. Either through specialist shows or via consensus requests.

i tdoesn't suprise me, in the eighties 60's music was considered oldies...
Subject: Re: '80s are Oldies now?
Basically all music prior to the 00s are considered oldies. If its over ten years, then its an oldie.

Or any song over 20 years old is an"oldie".Even WCBS FM here in New York City plays songs from 1987 and 1988.-howard-
Subject: Re: '80s are Oldies now?
I agree with "20 years" makes it oldies.
But I am one who refers to it as "the 80's"
since that was durring my teenage years.
now talking about radio I have noticed that most stations that say they are an "80's" station also include current music that is from Bands that were big durring the 80's
such as Van Halen, Journey, etc.
but im not complaining. if they play it. i will listen.
I work in a CD store so im getting used to people asking if we carry classics and then naming a group from the 80's. LOL 8)

BTW, there's a dance cover of Bryan Adams' "Heaven" out now too.
Subject: Re: '80s are Oldies now?
Well I played Metallica's "Jump in the Fire" on my radio show last week, and afterwards announced that it had been 19 years since it was first released, and suddenly realised how long ago that was...
Subject: Re: '80s are Oldies now?
That's gotta be the clincher. Look what happened to "(In Your Arms) Rescue Me"... now everyone thinks that song is so old.

I am shocked by that myself, but then I have to look at my own views in the past.
In the '80s I was into "oldies" (well, still am - music ecletic). So if I consider that the youngest songs I was listening to in '85 were from '70, well, that's just 15 years!
And - yikes - it's been 15 years!!!
And PS - I never heard of "old school" terminology but believe me, I came of age in the '80s!
