Subject: The unknown history of "General Hospi-Tale"

Written By: XenaKat13 on 08/13/02 at 11:46 a.m.

This was published in my local newspaper's gossip column (called the Track) yesterday and I thought it would be interesting to people. I couldn't find it online so I'm typing it out.

** Twenty-one years ago, when Luke and Laura were the king and queen of afternoon TV, a ditzy intern at KISS-108 penned the tune "General Hospi-Tale" to pay homage to the soap superstars.
The song was recorded by a studio group and went to No. 33 on Billboard's Hot 100 before fading into obscurity. But now Lisa Tedesco, aka Lisa Lipps and "General Hospi-Tale" are getting a second go-round.  The tune is featured on the new 142-song compilation CD "Like, Ohmigod! The '80's Pop Culture Box" and, maybe will be profiled on VH1's  "One Hit Wonders".
"In 1981, I was working nights at McDonald's in Revere," Lisa told the Track. "During the day, I interned at KISS and did the 'Soap Update'.  I wrote the song with Harry King, who came up with the hook, 'I just can't cope without my soaps', and recorded it as a goof, with comedian Jimmy Smith.  Well, (late KISS legend) Sunny Joe White put it on the air and the phones exploded!"
The record companies got wind of the response and MCA put together a studio group, the Afternoon Delights, who recorded the song.  The rest is, as they say, history--albeit, rather obscure history.
Lipps said she got a call from VH1 a couple of weeks ago and they were trying to locate the Delights--lead vocalist Rebecca Hall, Janet Powell, Suzanne Boucher, and Robalee Barnes--and footage of them performing the song on the old "Solid Gold" for the "One Hit Wonders" show.
"I'm hoping this will rekindle interest in the song," said Lipps, whose last royalty check--thanks to the compilation CD--was for 81 cents.
"We'll see what happens," she said. "But even if nothing does, it's better to be a one hit wonder than a no-hit wonder!" **
