Oh my god, I thought I'd never see another fan of Zaxon! Thankyou! Thankyou! Thankyou!!! My god, it's been so long since I played that!!!
We now return to our scheduled thread.
Subject: Re: Favourite 80's Video Games
You've already mentioned some of my faves including "Donkey Kong", "Tempest" and especially "Galaxian". I always preferred Mrs. Pac Man over the regular one. I thought it was easier.
On the Atari 2600/5200 I enjoyed playing "Frogger" and "Pitfall".
Subject: Re: Favourite 80's Video Games
I like:
pac man
Burgertime
Mr. Do
Tapper
Test drive
and the sega version of tetris where they had birds and bombs, and weights that would destroy blocks (god I wish I could remeber the name of this game)
Subject: Re: Favourite 80's Video Games
Frogger has always been a favourite of mine, but only on the first version (not the second BBC version, that was truly truly crap) and the recent Playstation update. I bought that, and it was classic still.
Other classic games that have stood the test of time include
Arcadians
Space Invaders (rose tinted specs, anyone?)
Klax
Pong
and many many more.
Soundtracks to these games of old were varied, everything from Jimi Hendrix (I found a Jimi Hendrix track implanted in one of my favourite games), to Fire Track's eternal anthem. The soundtracks had to be good, they made up for the fact that back then, although it wasn't the opinion held at the time, the graphics weren't half as good as they were today. But surely, in terms of gameplay, these games cannot be beaten?
Subject: Re: Favourite 80's Video Games
PAC-MAN!
He's even got his own church at http://www.flamingmayo.com/firstchurchofpacman/
(Remember, it's a joke and not a true religion.)
Also:
Frogger
Berzerk
Defender
Donkey Kong (the debut of Mario!)
Q*bert
Missile Command
And too many more to mention.
Subject: Re: Favourite 80's Video Games
Frogger
Donnkey Kong
Centipede
Tetris
Pac-man
Subject: Re: Favourite 80's Video Games
Q*bert and Gauntlet. But mostly, at the arcade, I headed for the Pinball machines, Pinbot and Taxi being my favorites.

I couldn't name all of my favourites, but here's a couple - they'll change after I've played the others a few times, trust me - and they've changed since last time too.
Fire Track
Dickie Brickie
Klax
Goal
Monsters
Croaker
Magic Eel
Tracer
Labyrinth
Karate Combat
Barbarian
Bolderdash
Impact
Dare Devil Denis
And that's just for starters. I love loads more.

??? :-/ Still trying to remember the names of my favourites.
I liked the first of the games that used the 12 inch version of CD's in the arcades in the early 80's. I remember one where there was a lot of flying over rocky landscape in part of the game, and flying through tunnels in another part. Blowing anything up at all resulted in a fireball that filled the screen. Can anyone identify it from that? ??? :-/

DragonQuest and Space Ace were the first two I knew of that used them.. but doesn't sound like the ones you're describing

Frogger
Turbo
Pole Position was fun, but not as fun as Turbo.
Subject: Re: Favourite 80's Video Games
Oooohh....Q Bert and Burgertime were fun! ;D
But the only video game I really played at the arcade was Centipede! :D
Subject: Re: Favourite 80's Video Games
Pole Position was indeed a good game - it has since been voted one of the best computer games of the last century by biased critics (in the case of ye olde arcade games, that doesn't matter, though, does it?) It must have been one of the first racing games ever out to capture the true idea of speed when racing - although I always used to find myself weaving in and out of each car and getting my times down to 50" each lap - and 52" for qualifying. I was addicted even trying to get these times down - it was fun!
What about Repton - anyone remember any of the editions? As far as I can remember, I owned Repton 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4 and Infinity. Another couple of versions of Repton 3 were produced, including an enhanced version which let you have infinite time, and max-255 lives.

I don't remember it. What format was it on, maybe it could ring some bells with me if I knew the format.
I remember I had two versions of Donkey Kong. The original Nintendo one, and then one with darker, and slower graphics. It was very difficult not to fall through the hole in the screen.
Subject: Re: Favourite 80's Video Games
Popeye was my favorite. When Olive Oyl made kiss symbols fall from the sky,Popeye had to catch them and then you had Bluto right behind ya and when you came to a spinach can,Popeye would eat the spinach and beat the living hell out of Bluto. The hardest level was the ship.I remember playing that game in 1985 and 1986.Man,those were the memories! :(

Subject: Re: Favourite 80's Video Games
Games I spent HOURS playing:
(first, my favorite of all time)
-Stargate
The "big brother" of Defender. "Smartbombs" were possibly the coolest weapon on any video game back then. It was one of those game you could continue on by inserting more quarters, or start off with more ships and weapons by inserting more quarters in the beginning of the game. Longest game on 1 quarter...four hours...and one SORE ass (I think I kicked in the change box out of frustration when I finally lost). A few sound effects from this game (or defender) have ended up as samples in songs over the years...the latest being a hip hop song I heard the other day with the sound sample that played when one of the enemy ships picked up the "people" on the landscape that you were supposed to protect.
-Krazy Climber
Wacky game using two joy sticks moved in sequence to climb city buildings while avoiding objects being dropped from the windows, while gurders rained down from above. The object was to get to the top and get picked up by the helicopter.
-Rygar
This came about towards the end of the decade...and I spent MANY latenight hours in the local 7-11 trying to master this one. What a great game, with many weapons to collect and hidden treasures.
-Russian Attack
Another late nighter at 7-11...this one came prior to Rygar, and was similar in the concept that you were moving in one direction to get through levels and killing things along the way.
-Galaga
There was a glitch in the programming of this game that allowed you to play the entire game without any of the enemy ship firing at you. IIRC, on the first or second wave of enemy ships, if you left one particular enemy ship fly by for about 20 minutes, it would finally stop firing at you. Then when you killed it and the new wave of ships came up, they wouldn't fire at you. I remember achieving success at this, while other times being halted by the arcade employees who knew the secret and didn't want people camped out on their Galaga machines.
And of course...
-Astroids
Nothing will ever beat the feeling of mastering this game while the girl I liked sat back and watched...I felt like such the stud way back then in '81. My 8th grade crush never panned out, but I'll never forget that day in the arcade... ha ha
That's it for now...hope you guys enjoyed my comments.
:-)
Jim
ps. For any of you who live near Ohio and have a chance to visit Cedar Point amusement park, there is a big old arcade there with MANY of the old games from the 80's. Just don't get lost in there and waste your day away!

Not sure...never played the game that long. Either I quit playing out of boredom or the arcade employee shut the game off because I was "cheating". I think I only managed to get it to work a couple of times. Actually, I didn't know there was a final level...I just figured they kept on getting faster and faster (and shooting more and more) the further you went.

Subject: Re: Favourite 80's Video Games
As I have admitted before, I could never get the CHAIN file to work on Galaga, and so couldn't ever play it to see what happened past L99.
In fact, DJ Midas, I think that most of the games you mention (Track And Field, 720, Klax) are available on the Namco Museum games for the Playstation.
Pole Position II? I remember two version of Pole Pos, one which was the normal version, and the Night version of the game. In this version you could either choose to play normal (1982) or the night version for both Qualifying and race proper. DJ, is this the one?
Subject: Re: Favourite 80's Video Games
As I remember there were two games called Spyhunter, the one where you went around shooting things on an A6 sized landscape (could enlarge at touch of F0 to fullscreen), and a game which I never had any idea existed.
Bubble Bobble, too, has come out on Playstation since.
Subject: Re: Favourite 80's Video Games
Pretty much the only video games I played were
Pac Man
Tron
Paperboy
Asteroids
Loved those games so much I didn't have time for others!
Subject: Re: Favourite 80's Video Games
I'm curious... what format did people play Paperboy on, when I was probably playing it on a totally different one?
Subject: Re: Favourite 80's Video Games
Bobo, I played it at the arcade on a pinball type machine. And Tron was on a tabletop machine at the arcade as well.
Subject: Re: Favourite 80's Video Games
Thanks for the info, Jonman. I've got an old BBC Micro, see, still with the same games I've known and loved forever - it played the same games as your beloved Pinball machines.
Tron Cycle Races, right? I'm going to have to pick up a 5.5 of that, sometime, I'm pretty sure there is one floating around.
Subject: Re: Favourite 80's Video Games
There were different stages of Tron but the lightcycle races were my fave!!
Let me know if you find a version floating around for PC...I'd love to play Tron and Paperboy again!!
Subject: Re: Favourite 80's Video Games
The version for Tron PC is Tron V2.0 published by Disney Interactive and released in 2002.

"Prepare to Qualify....."
Yes, I think perhaps my favorite (if there is 1) ARCADE game.
But "VIDEO" is personal TV games.....I never got a PP version for that so I can't say PP was my favorite. But then, again, it's hard to choose! I still love Space Invaders and Asteroids and Pitfall on Atari. Not that I've played them in ages. (I do have the Classic Atari CD for our PC - very good. Never played Breakout back in the day, now it's my favorite at the PC!)

I remember Track and Field so well.I was trying to play the"discuss throw"and I rolled the track ball so much,I caught a blister the next day which was very painful :(And also,I was running the 100 meter dash and I tripped on those bars that you're supposed to jump over and I never qualified. -howard-
Subject: Re: Favourite 80's Video Games
Hard luck j.o. I guess that must have been the precursor to International Track And Field on the Playstation. A great game, much superior to its sequel.

There was an arcade version of Pole Position II. You could choose from one of 4 tracks to race on.

It's not the same one I was thinking of, then. I often think of alternate versions of the same games rather than sequels of the previous. Nightpole was one of my favourite variations on the great arcade racer.

Subject: Re: Favourite 80's Video Games
Yet another topic I thought should be revived, along with some information some of you may not know.
In the early 1980's, arcade games were "custom built". While the cases were pretty standard, the internal parts were all different. A Pac-Man game was a Pac-Man game, and a Donkey Kong game was for only Donkey Kong.
In the mid-1980's, a new standard came out thought, that was JAMMA. Before then, the internal parts were specific for each game and cabinet. JAMMA let manufacturers put in a single controller set into all cabinets, and the arcade could then swap out "game boards", which would let them change the game inside the cabinet.
Game conversions before then involved replacing almost all of the internals, so it was rarely done. When JAMMA came out, this changed everything. A lot of arcades would swap out games as they became old, putting into place newer more popular games. Since the cabinets were mostly the same, it was easily done. This is why a lot of the games you saw back then would have a Pac-Man box, but have a different game. And of you looked at the screen burn, you could sometimes identify 2-3 different games.
If anybody wants to relive some of those old games, you might want to check out MAME. MAME is an arcade game emulator. It lets you play hundreds of different games on your home computer. The problem is in getting the ROMs for the game. A lot of ROMs are available as public domain. Others are in a grey area, where nobody owns the rights anymore but it also is no longer distributed.
I have used MAME for over 5 years now, and have rediscovered such classics as Journey, Popeye, Kanga, Bag Man, and others. I even showed my 16 year old son "Donkey Kong", and he was amazed that there was a game before Mario Brothers, where Mario did not have a name. FOr those of us that remember, he was just called "Jumpman" back then. :)
If anybody is curious, MAME is public domain, and available at
http://www.mame.net/

I have MAME.And damn,it's the best fun I've had in 15 years. 8) :D
