My ex-husband and myself belonged to a fitness center in the 80s. He would lift weights and I would pretend to be doing some kind of exercise. After what I thought was enough time would go past, I told him that I was going into the steam room/sauna and I would meet him at the jacuzzi in a bit. That was the part I liked. We used to jog and I hated that too. The only kind of exercise that I really like (besides THAT) is dancing-any kind.

I remember get in shape girls for kids. It was like a cassette tape and some sort of exercise thing. I had the ankle weights but wanted the "gymnastics" ribbon.

Do any you remember the presidential challenge fitness awards they had in grade schools in the 80s? I think they had them in most schools across the U.S. There were a variety of different exercises you were tested on, 100 yard dash, etc., etc. I can't believe I just remembered that but anyways...

Out here we had something similar called "Field Day" where there were a variety of events that you won place ribbons. Thats so funny that you mention that because about a week ago I drove past my old elementary school & they have the same metal monkey bars that I used to play on & for some reason "Field Day" popped in my head. :D

I'm sure I've still got that ribbon thing in the back of a cupboard somewhere! Remember the theme song from those tapes?
Get in shape girl, you love the feeling
Get in shape girl, it's so appealing...
Oh dear. Scary... but not as scary as that woman with the eyepatch in Jane Fonda's workout book. But which was more annoying - the Get In Shape Girl song, or that woman in Jane Fonda's advanced workout video who sang along to the backing music? Was that ever a good idea? Most likely: No.

It wasn't just the 80s. We also had that in the 70s too. I believe it came out in the 50s under Eisenhower but I could be wrong. We also had field days too.

I have to come to the defense of legwarmers. They do serve a purpose. Having studied dance, sometimes your muscles get overworked. Keeping them warm helps. This is usually done by wrapping it. I have problems with my right ankle. When I do any kind of "heavy" dancing, putting an ace bandage on the ankle really helps. Some people have problems with their calf muscles-this is when leg warmers come in handy. BUT! To use them as a fashion statment was just so... well, you know what I mean. To me, that like wearing exersize clothes as a fashion statment. Does anyone remember those really stupid gym uniforms? I think they were blue and white striped. Man, they were UGLY! I'm surprised people didn't start wearing those and calling it fashion. YUCK!

Yeah, they had it during the 1970's as well. In Canada we called it Participaction. We had the field day exercises and the merit badges (bronze, silver, gold). I remember it was a great time to get out of class and goof off. Weird thing is they didn't have it when I went into high school in the early 80's. By the way, the Canadian government stopped promoting Participaction last year. Right about the same time they released a study showing that obesity among children and adults has hit record highs. Hmmmm.... ???
And just a comment about all these legwarmer pics you all have been posting. I think they're pretty sexy if you ask me.

oh, wow I forgot all about that but yes. And the gym teacher made it seem like such a big deal. ;D You would get a certificate if you made such and such scores.

Does anyone remember the early morning exercise show where there were 3 women (usually) dressed like Jane Fonda, but even less clothes? They were spinning around on these large circles (kind of like a dance floor) while they did their aerobic routine?
The women were gorgeous and there were alot of really close-up shots. I can't remember what channel it would have been on, but it definately was not one of the big 3 networks. The show would have been deemed a little to risque. Anyway, I want to say 7Am, weekdays, early - mid 80's.
Any help would be appreciated.

I was going through some stuff I had kept from my younger years a couple weeks back. In the middle of all of it, I found a certificate from a Pepsi Basketball Hot Shot contest that I competed in the 80s. I don't remember seeing a date on it, but I think it was toward the earlier part of the decade. Anyways, I chuckled when I saw my total score from the event. 69. Juvenile humor, I know, but what cracked me up was the thought I was probably racing around the park that day telling the whole world that was what I had scored and having no concept or clue of its other meaning. ;D
