Subject: Non-Country songs that sound Country

Written By: Screwball54 on 06/16/02 at 00:11 a.m.

I was at the mall today and heard "walking in memphis" By Mark Cohn, It is sort of a quazi -country song.  So that got me thinking of what other songs are sort of country, and these came to mind:

"Walking in memphis" by Mark Cohn
"Heart of the Matter" by Don Henly
"Valley Road" by Bruce Hornsby
"American Dream" by The Dirt Band
"Driving my life away" by Eddie Rabbit

Can anybody think of anymore?

Like that, or a song with a non-country melody but about a country subject.

Just about anything by the Pure Prarie League or Marshall Tucker Band.

For specifics, I would say Peaceful, Easy Feeling and Lyin' Eyes by the Eagles.

Damn near anything by the Eagles or Bad Company.   Perhaps even "Every Rose Has It's Thorn" by Poison and "Dead or Alive" by Bon Jovi.

Some stuff by Chris Isaak is country-like. The San Francisco Days album comes to mind, but the others have similar songs too.

"Sail On"-The Commodores (until the end)
"Rest Your Lovin' on Me"-The Bee Gees (flip side of "Too Much Heaven")
"Black Velvet"-Alannah Myles
"Wicked Game"-Chris Isaak
And of course, "Cotton-Eyed Joe" by Rednex, even though it was a country song in its original form.

I think Elvis Costello has written a few country songs without knowing it.  "Allison" sounds like country to me... I can almost hear the steel guitar in the background.  Also, the song "Girls Talk", written by Costello, but made popular (well, semi-popular) by Dave Edmunds has a country twang to it.  Actually, "Girls Talk" was covered by a female country singer... a friend of mine had the song on mix tape back in the mid 80's.   I have no idea idea who this country artist is, but she did a fine job of the song.

Did you know that Vince Gill was the lead singer on Pure Prairie League's song "Let Me Love You Tonight"?

The introduction to "Bucket, Forks and Pock," by Alice Donut sounds like a country song until right after the chorus.

Pop and country blended a lot in the '80s. One non-country song I really remember on country radio was "Stuck On You", by Lionel Ritchie, which really fit in at the time.

I didn't know this was a Pure Prairie League song until back in January.  I didn't even know Vince was in PPL until a couple years ago.  And the PPL music I was used to sounds nothing like this song (which I always liked) , so I was suprised to find out the artist was PPL.

I grew up on PPL music. My Dad & his brothers had a band (when I was a wee lad) and over the years, whenever they're together, the flat tops come out and the jammin' begins.  Most of the PPL songs (besides "Amie" and "I'll Fix Your Flat Tire, Merle") I grew up thinking were Bailey Boys originals or something.  Same with Grand Funk Railroad, with the exception of the radio hits.

Nothing like the feeling of a 9 yr old excitedly saying, "Dad!  Somebody's singing your song on the radio!!"  And getting the grinning, "No, we were singing THEIR song."  ::)

Yes!  That was an awesome song!  Gotta turn it up!

Regarding Lionel Richie, "Stuck on You" was meant as a country-type song.  I recall Richie being in a cowboy hat on a 45 label or something.

The beginning of Stevie Wonder's I Ain't Gonna Stand For It reminds me of a country song.

Yep, it's one of my favourites, too - been meaning to try it as a karaoke for ages, but never found a Karaoke DJ who's got it :-(
