Subject: What ever happened to Fruzen Gladje? HELP!
What ever happened to Fruzen Gladje? I always have wondered this, but have never quite gotten an answer. All anybody I have ever asked simply replies that they don't know, but that it isn't available any more. I absolutley loved their ice cream, not to mention its unique container, but was disappointed when it began missing. I recently rekindled memories of it as I was eating some Godiva lately and now am on a quest to find out what happened to my old favorite ice cream. Please pass along any information you have: Did they go out of business? Where they bought? Who actually made it? Where o where might I find some if it is still around?
:-/???
Help, please! Thanks!!

I remember the name of the ice cream. It's kind of hard to forget! As to what became of the product, I'm assuming it either went out of business or another company bought it out and changed the name! :)

Correct spelling was/is "Frusen Gladje". I'd totally forgotten about the stuff until I read your post here. You might be able to find the answers to some of your q's at the link below. Funny thing is, up until 6 months ago, I lived about 15 miles from the NY address shown on the site...

Thanks for the replies! I tried the link provided, but the 800 number refers me to a 900 number; I don't call 900 numbers ;). The 516 number is disconnected. I would love any other information anybody might have. Thanks for the responses; I was beginning to think I was the only one who remembered this great stuff! If you have any other ideas or info, please pass it on!
Thanks!

Ok, ok, I found out some info...
1984
Kraft, the makers of Philadelphia Cream Cheese, buys Lenders' Bagels and goes on to acquire Celestial Seasonings tea, Tombstone Pizza, and Frusen Gladje ice cream

Frusen Glädjé ice cream
Lane Hartill
Ice cream that you could buy in the grocery store used to be chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry, pretty much. It was pumped up with lots of air, artificial flavors, and additives.
MELTDOWN: The gourmet brand began as a copycat product in 1980 and ended as a mystery.
DUKE UNIVERSITY
Then, in the mid-1970s, Russian immigrant Ruben Mattus introduced Häagen-Dazs to America. The superpremium ice cream had a high butterfat content and a rich taste – perfect for pampering Baby Boomers. (And while the name and container suggested it was imported, the name was nonsensical and the ice cream was made in America.)
Riding the coattails of Häagen-Dazs came Frusen Glädjé, concocted by fourth-generation ice-creammaker Richard Smith. It came on the market in 1980 and took its place beside Häagen-Dazs. (Its packaging also suggested – falsely – that it was imported.)
In 1985, Mr. Smith sold Frusen Glädjé to Kraft/General Foods Inc.
Eight years later, a mystery began. A Kraft spokeswoman states that Kraft sold its Frusen Glädjé license to Unilever Corp. in 1993.
A spokesman for Unilever, however, claims that Frusen Glädjé was never part of the deal. As of today, Frusen Glädjé ice cream has apparently melted into the paperwork.

There's a picture of their infamous container on the page...
Just wish, they had some of the ice cream!!

Oops - I forgot to tell you. There's actually a very good reason why the "516" no. didn't work for you: The area code for Ronkonkoma, NY, was changed about two years ago, and apparently they haven't updated that info on the site, lol ("516" was the old area code). Try that same phone no. using the new "631" area code instead - hopefully it'll work... :-)
