D2 were definitely the ultimate 80s New Wave band! Sure, they looked good in videos but they also had the talent to back it up, as they wrote their own songs and actually played instruments. They put the current influx of boy bands to shame...

Q #1: I never knew why Andy and Roger Taylor quit the group. Why did they?
Q #2: Do you listen to their current music and what do you think of it?

"By 1985, Duran Duran fever was beginning to cool off, and after the band completed the the title track for the James Bond film A View to A Kill, the group went on hiatus. Andy and John Taylor formed the supergroup the Power Station with vocalist Robert Palmer and former Chic drummer Tony Thompson in January, releasing their eponymous debut album in the spring; it spawned the Top 10 singles "Some Like It Hot" and "Get It On (Bang a Gong)." The remaining members of Duran Duran — Nick Rhodes, Simon LeBon and Roger Taylor — responded with their own side project, Arcadia, which released an album called So Red the Rose in the fall of 1985; the album launched the Top 10 hit "Election Day." Early in 1986, Roger Taylor announced he was taking a year-long sabbatical from the group; he never returned. Several months later, Andy Taylor also left, reducing Duran Duran to a trio." - All music guide

Their last album release (2000), "Pop Trash", was pretty good, though it lacked the passion for which they were known, IMO.
Then again, there were just 2 of the original members left by that point.
These songs from "Pop Trash" are the ones I listen to most often:
"Lava Lamp"
"Playing With Uranium"
"Pop Trash Movie"
"Mars Meets Venus"
Thankfully, they finally got it together and did us all a favor and regrouped as Duran Duran was always meant to be - The Original 5. :)
Subject: Re: Duran Duran
I do listen to all their music past and present. I will confess I prefer their past material with the original 5 members. ;)

Didn't Nick turn 40 this weekend? Thought I saw a blurb about it on the bottom of my screen while watching E!...

I never thought about their birthdays/ages. Maybe April will come around and enlighten us as to that respect. ;)

Cool thread!!! Yes, Nick Rhodes turned 40 June 8th. That just seems so unreal to me! :(
Anyway, if you go to their website www.duranduran.com, you can hear a snip of one of their tracks that will be on their new album. The song is called "Bedroom Toys" and it's a very funky track. I love it! I keep hitting 'refresh' hehe.
One of my best friends from middle school and high school (I got her into Duran Duran) has been in contact with me recently and we've decided when they come on tour around here - we're going!!! I can't wait!! (If I can find my old JT hat, maybe I'll wear it! I already threw away my white jazz shoes)
Also, here is a copy and paste from their latest news section:
Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Museum
The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame Museum in good ole Cleveland, OH is featuring some Duran Duran in their latest exhibit. "50 Years of Rock and Roll" is a timeline that showcases Nick and JT. At the end of June, another exhibit will open that will feature clothing worn by Nick, John and Roger.
Whew, I'm done rambling now :)

Is this the symbol you're referring to? http://www.latebarradio.com/durantattoos/images/djtat.gif
If so, that's another reference to "7" (as in Seven and the Ragged Tiger). Count the ends, plus the bar down the middle.
Also, here's the latest from D2.com:
LONDON (Reuters) - British pop legends Duran Duran, which enjoyed a string of hits in the 1980s, wants to convert a new generation of "Duranies" during a worldwide tour announced on Thursday. Duran Duran's business manager David Ravden told Reuters the band had almost finished a new album, which it is planning to release early next year and will follow with a worldwide tour.
The band, which has sold more than 60 million albums in the last 20 years and reformed last year, has not signed with a record label, but Ravden said negotiations were under way."We are talking to and are in negotiations with a number of major record companies, but I cannot name them," he said.
The news will be music to the ears of devoted Duranies who kept the flamefor the idols of the New Romantic movement burning through hundreds of fan clubs from Moscow to New Zealand to Taipei. Although often ridiculed for their stylized videos and penchant foreyeliner and pixie boots, more than 50,000 Internet pages are devoted to Duran Duran. Even Britain's late Princess Diana once gushed that they were her favorite band.
While the original band members -- singer Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes, Andy Taylor, John Taylor and Roger Taylor -- once graced the bedroom walls of countless teenage girls, they are not the young bucks they once were. But Ravden was confident the five, now in their 40s, were in good shape to take on their younger pop rivals in the battle for a new generation offans.
"Obviously when you are 20 you are invariably slightly slimmer that when you are 40. But the labels we have met have commented on how good everyone looks."
Duran Duran formed in 1978 but did not achieve great success until after they recruited frontman Simon Le Bon, who is married to model Yasmin Le Bon.
The band shot to fame with albums such as Big Thing, Rio and Arena in the 1980s but a line-up change and changing music tastes saw it fade into relative obscurity in the 1990s.
The original members came together for the first time 15 years in 2001 to record an album.
God, I can't wait!!!! :D

it was a seven actually.. for the album Seven and the Ragged Tiger, which was a reference to the five members of Duran Duran and their two managers (or was it one manager and someone else, I'm getting a little rusty in my DD2 lore)

Just thinking bout these guys last night as I was up late and happened to see a film clip on a late night video show. It was called White Lines and appeared to be about cocaine. Pretty crappy film clip as it never once gave a decent close up of anyone to see how they all look now. It looked like it was definately John, Andy and Nick in the background, couldnt see the 5th person at all. Simon looked OLD !
I was never a fan in the 80s - liked a couple of the classic hits - and had a secret crush on Simon for 5 minutes that I refused to tell my friends about !

This was their cover version of the 1983 rap song "White Lines" by Grand Master Flahs & Melle Mel, a HUGE old school hit.
