Subject: Best Smiths album?

Written By: Criz on 05/29/02 at 12:45 a.m.

It's very tough, but definitly between 'The Queen Is Dead' and 'Hatful Of Hollow'. What about for everyone else who likes the Smiths?

Probably a tie between Meat Is Murder and The Queen Is Dead. I liked all the songs from beginning to end without having to "get used to" them.

Hi Criz!  Well, for me its Meat is Murder, although every Smiths album has its good qualities!

I can't make up my mind between "Meat Is Murder"(1985) and "The Queen Is Dead"(1986) at all because both are just great.Must-haves for every "serious" music fans.

My two favourites have to be The Smiths (for "Suffer Little Children" and "The Hand That Rocks The Cradle"...two of the best songs Morrissey has ever written, and the rest of the album is great as well), and Meat Is Murder (for the entire album and the best bassline ever in "Barbarism Begins At Home"...and I seem to be the only one who actually likes the title track). Those are tied for first, with The Queen Is Dead a very close second.

Thank you for mentioning 'Hand that Rocks The Cradle'!! No-one seems to mention it - highly underrated in my opinion. It's up there in my top 5 Smiths songs, absolutly fantastic in my opinion :)

If you actually read the words to "The Hand That Rocks The Cradle," it is just pure poetry. A sign that Morrissey was a brilliant songwriter right from the beginning. It is highly underrated, as are so many Smiths songs which are equally brilliant.

Don't worry - I know all the words ;D And do you think it is about child abuse, but it so easily could be entirely innocent? Your very true about most Smiths songs being highly underrated. It's usually those tracks that are better I think, apart from a few exceptions.

The song could be taken either way, depending how you look at it, I suppose. I sincerely doubt Morrissey or any of The Smiths condone the act of child abuse, so the accusations they faced at that time were ridiculous. Personally, I perceive the song to be about a very possessive parent, to the point of obsession. Have you ever seen the film of the same name? The song would have fit in it very well, I think.

So which underrated Smiths tracks do you think are NOT better than the ones which are not (if that makes sense)? I can think of three: Death At One's Elbow, Golden Lights (even though it's not really a Smiths song), and Death Of A Disco Dancer. :D

I completly agree with you on your first two choices. 'Golden Lights' is especially awful!! Yet we can forgive dear ol' Moz as it's not his song. I don't mind 'Death of a Disco Dancer' as much.

So the other way around - which underrated tracks do you think deserve more recognition?

Well...since a lot of people only seem to recognise "How Soon Is Now" (on this side of the world anyway), any other song of theirs could do with some more recognition, aside from the three songs I had mentioned previously. :) Just a few examples of these would be:

Suffer Little Children
The Hand That Rocks The Cradle
Pretty Girls Make Graves
Still Ill
Reel Around The Fountain
What Difference Does It Make?
The Headmaster Ritual
That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore
Barbarism Begins At Home
Meat Is Murder
Frankly, Mr. Shankly
I Know It's Over
Cemetry Gates
Bigmouth Strikes Again
The Boy With The Thorn In His Side
There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
Is It Really So Strange?
Sheila Take A Bow
Shoplifters Of The World Unite
Sweet And Tender Hooligan
Half A Person
William, It Was Really Nothing
etc...etc...etc...

There are several more, but I think I got most of them. :D
