Subject: Best Intros to 80's songs

Written By: Criz on 05/29/02 at 12:22 a.m.

This just came to mind while listening to the Depeche Mode song 'Behind The Wheel'. What are the best introductions to popular songs of the 80's - there must be hundreds! Other good ones that come to mind would be:

OMD - Enola Gay and Souvenir ( Very catchy - they get my tapping the tune out!)

Berlin - The Metro

Corey Hart - Sunglasses At Night

Eurythmics - There Must Be An Angel ( Love Annies tune at the start)

The Smiths - Queen Is Dead and Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others ( the fading in and out part - good, but why?)

The Vapours - Turning Japanese

New Order - Blue Monday ( What else can I say aprt from fantastic tune!)

Yazoo - Situation ( The most sampled bit of music ever is Alison Moyet's laugh - bit of trivia for you :) )

Duran Duran - The Reflex

Transvision Vamp - Baby I Don't Care

Cure - Inbetween Days

Alphaville - Big In Japan

More to come I'm sure :)

Just out of curiosity I downloaded the song and listened to it (I knew I heard that song before...) and, as far as the intro, once all the helicopter-like noises and stuff is finished (when the riff begins) the intro rocks!  I suppose that would be the 'after-intro'.

Funny to hear "Magic" by the Cars. Now to think about it, didnt a few of the cars songs have similar intros? not a note, but a noise?

I like the little guitar thingie intros to these two by Smash Palace
-No Love Lost
-Living on the Borderline

sad to see that they only had one self titled ablum in 1984.
OK, so that isnt true. They changed songwriters and released a CD in the late 90s, but it is all modern-punk rock and sounds like all other modern punk rock out there (yawn)...

Off the top of anyones mind, does anyone know what kind of keyboard Colin Campbell played for Corey Hart in that song?
Im guessing a DX-7 by the sound, but I am not sure.

This is not an intro, but it is one of the best instrumental interludes of any song I have ever listened to. Just listen to Mister Mister's "Broken Wings" at around 02mins/30secs and then again at 04mins/06secs into the song. I can't explain why every time I hear this song I must stop what I'm doing so that I can catch those two parts of the song. Yesterday I was at the supermarket and this song was playing and I just stood there motionless in the middle of the aisle, listening intently :P :)

Pretenders - Middle Of The Road (I love that short drum sequence)
Men At Work - Who Could It Be Now?
Prince - Sign 'O' The Times, Controversy, If I Was Your Girlfriend (album version)
Huey Lewis & The News - Hip To Be Square, Do You Believe In Love
Nu Shooz - I Can't Wait
Go-Go's - Head Over Heels
Debbie Gibson - Only In My Dreams (especially the backing vocal part that goes "uh...ah-uh...ah-uh...ah-uh")

I think you mentioned most of them, especially "Let's Go Crazy", "Final Countdown", "Blue Monday", and "Money For Nothing."  All I can think of now.

For Metal I'd have to say "House of Broken love" by Great White (off of "Twice Shy"): The intro to that tune broke all the rules and habbits of all the other Melodic Rock/Metal song writers of that day and still sounded good.

A close second would be the prelude to "Crusader" from Saxon (really sets the mood of the song).

For New Wave I'd say it's a tie between Duran Duran's "Rio" and "Route 66" from Depeche Mode.

Hmmm...my top four or five faves:

How Soon Is Now, The Smiths.
How much more classic can you get?  That freaky, reverb   guitar sound has no equal anywhere in rock music, and is    unmistakeable.  Johnny Marr is a genius, as is Morrissey.

Purple Rain, Prince.
The definitive power ballad, if you ask me.  This comes on in the car and the stereo goes ALL the way up.  That cool echo just bounces around the car.

A Little Respect, Erasure.
Even people who don't like Erasure or synthpop know this intro.   And the song itself, of course, is a gem of synthpop magic.

Just Can't Get Enough, Depeche Mode
The archetype of 80s synth-dance, probably the most recognizable synth riff there is.

Regards,
Snidely

"Rock and roll party in the streets" - Axe Great piano intro, kinda a prelude to what Savatage would do later on.

"Angels on the balcony" - Blondie Very different type of music at the time this came out in '83, almost a prelude to Industrial/techno stuff

"Love song" -Tesla great Ballad!

"Uncle Tom's Cabin" - Warrent The nephew of the lead singer did this, pretty good!

David Bowie- Fashion..I can't describe it, but its so great, I immediately crank up the radio when I hear that.
David Bowie- Lets Dance- No explanation, its just like a countdown to get your postierior on the dancefloor.
Adam Ant- Stand and Deliver ;D... I can't believe no one thought of this one!!!! IT IS AWESOME!!!    "Stand and Deliver!!" and the trumpets!? Please let this one appear on some lists!
Adam Ant- Prince Charming ;D... that one still freaks my friends out when I play it. I love to crank that one too!
U2- where the streets have no name....When ever this one starts it has that kind of feeling when you just KNOW that something big is coming.
Peter Gabriel- sledge hammer  ;D... the very beginning is so quiet it makes you turn it up to hear it, then the horns come in loud and clear and wake the dead!

A good intro, to me, is one that leaves absolutely no doubt in your head what song it is you're about to hear.
If you don't realize you're about to hear "Stand and Deliver" then you're probably deaf!
Unfortunately, some intros are close enough that they can throw you off a sec or two.  I used to get that with "How Soon is Now?" and (of all things!) "Hippychick"!    :-/
