Subject: Pyromania or Hysteria?

Written By: CeramicsFanatic on 05/28/02 at 04:11 p.m.

Which Def Leppard album do you prefer?

I've noticed that many people here mention Hysteria more than Pyromania.  Personally, I prefer Pyromania...it was the first album I ever heard by them and IMO every track on it is awesome!!! ;D

Both are very good, but if I had to choose one it would be Pyromania.

Pyromania. It seems just a little harder (music-wise). Hysteria is definitely close behind in the "likeability" scale.  ;)

I'll add my fave song from each (just because I feel like it  ;)):

Pyromania - Rock Of Ages

Hysteria - Armageddon-it

"As the '90s began, mainstream hard rock shifted away from Leppard's signature pop-metal and towards edgier, louder bands, yet the group maintained a sizable audience into the late '90s and were one of only a handful of '80s metal groups to survive the decade more or less intact." - allmusic.com

Both are great but I prefer Hysteria because of the
song "Pour Some Sugar On Me".  ;)

I love both of these albums as well but I have a deeper affection for Pyromania, as it was the album that introduced me to Def Lepard, my favorite rock band of all time!!!  :)

Oooh, a thread for ME!!!

Where to begin...  Pyromania was phenomenal, as it truly launched the band into the mainstream.  It was a major stepping stone, as it was the first album partaking of a line-up change, adding Phil Collen and removing Pete Willis.  You can truly hear the influence Phil brought into the band, as it is the first album of Def Leppard's that didn't have a taste of 70's metal in it, but rather is THE rock album of the 80's to date, whose sound is copied repeatedly by other 80's rock bands up until 1987 - 88.  Joe's voice lessons have greatly imroved his vocal range, and their songwriting is really beginning to have that fun kick in it.  Mutt's influence is STRONGLY evident here.  A great all-around album, and amilestone for 80's music.

Hysteria - After a 3.5 year disappearance while Rick Allen recovered from the loss of his left arm, Hysteria limps onto the scene.  Yes, limps, as Women fails and then Animal doesn't chart high enough.  As the band is preparing for defeat, Pour Some Sugar On Me is released.  It's rocket fuel for the album, which takes off and never looks back.  People are now listening to Hysteria, and realizing that Def Leppard has NOT been dead these last 4 years, but have actually been laying down some serious tracks.  7 out of 12 tracks are released, 2 of which hit number 1. (This is based on R and R ratings, not Billboard.  Billboard shows only one number 1 hit).  While the songs of Pyromania have a more raw feeling to them, those on Hysteria are slicker, more finely produced, and in most opinions more fun to listen to and party with.  The band has meshed more completely.  Rick is hitting the skins tight as ever.  Hysteria has become the new benchmark against which all rock albums will be compared until about 1993.  Bands carbon copy the sound of Hysteria for the next 5 years, until the end of the so-called "Hair Metal" age.

Now, my choice?  Hysteria, for the reasons mentioned above.   ;D

Pyromania was one of the first albums I ever had, but I think today I'd prefer Hysteria.  One of those albums I could listen to all the way through...
