Subject: What is your favorite PERFECT ALBUM?

Written By: Trinity on 05/25/02 at 09:41 p.m.

A PERFECT ALBUM is one that is wonderful from start to finish.

One that is connected by content. One that lures you in to stay, until it's over.

I heard one today!  ARC OF A DIVER
                          STEVE WINWOOD  1980.

Some of my other favorites:

           BELLA DONNA-STEVIE NICKS
           THE PRETENDER- JACKSON BROWNE
           RUMBLE DOLL- PATTI SCIALFA

So, let's hear it! What are your PERFECT ALBUMS, and why?

Boston-1976 (Every song Rocked)
Buckingham-Nicks-1973  (Wonderful acoustics)
Fair Warning by Van Halen-1981 (IMO, Thier best Lp)
Get Lucky by Loverboy-1981 (Again, EVERY song was great)
Whitesnake-1987 (Same can be said for this one)
High Voltage by AC/DC-1976 (Bon Scott at his peak)
Player-1977 Just a fun little bubble-gumish LP)
The Long Run by the Eagles-1979 (Thier last & best Studio effort)
Rubber Soul by The Beatles-1965 (Of MANY great ones...THIS was thier "Diamond In The Rough")

80's Favs would be:

The Queen Is Dead - The Smiths
Hatful Of Hollow - The Smiths
Immaculate Collection - Madonna
Thriller - Michael Jackson
Greatest Hits - Bangles
Talk Show - Go Go's (Beauty and the Beat has better songs I must say, but on Talk Show I like a lot all but one, whereas Beuty has a few which I do not like - hope you understand this!)

I'm sure there are lots more, but I can't seem to think at the moment :)

Def Leppard - Pyromania (duh)
Def Leppard - Hysteria (duh)
Anything by Def Leppard, actually with the possible exception of On Through The Night ("X" is released here in the US on July 30!)
Michael Jackson - Thriller
Slaughter - Stick It To ya
Prince - Purple Rain
AC/DC - Back In Black
Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet
Metallica - Black Album
They Might Be Giants - Flood
Poison - Open Up And Say... Ahh
Night Ranger - Seven Wishes

There are a lot more I can add to this list, but will refrain from doing so.

Oh, how I long for the days when record companies and artists released albums that you could joyfully listen from beginning to end, instead of them only having 1 or 2 good songs and a lot of crap you never want to hear again after the first run-through...

This is a tough question for me, 'cause I rarely bought tapes or albums in the 80's, and have made up for that by buying countless Greatest Hits albums though BMG  ;D

That said...some of the few albums I really enjoyed from start-to-finish are 'Thriller', 'Rain on the Scarecrow', 'Appetite for Destruction', 'Kick' (although INXS's album right before that was really good, too), 'Like A Virgin', 'Hysteria', 'Rebel Yell', 'Out of the Blue', 'Synchronicity', 'Sports' and 'Vivid'.  The best start-to-finish album is 'Purple Rain'.  I'm sure there's other good ones out there but I've listened to so few.

You can tell by my tastes I was big into the alternative and goth scene. :-)  Had such little exposure to non-mainstream music back then.

It's cheaper this way for the record companies.  Previously, you had an artist in the studio, and they took the time to make their albums AND their B-Sides, and more work was put into the actual album tracks.  Now they figure, "Screw it.  We'll release the single, and instead of B-Sides we'll add some remixes of the same song and a radio edit.  Stuff like that.  Then we can just throw fill songs on, save time.  Use the B-Sides on the album. and get the promotion rolling on that single!"  We're the ones who get screwed.

As long as you're speaking about what gets played on the radio, I'll agree with you 100%, but since I don't listen to radio anymore - it doesn't apply to the artists/bands I listen to. I'd be having a hard time believing VNV Nation, Clan Of Xymox, Assemblage 23, Ikon, Wolfsheim, New Order, Tuxedomoon, et al. have ever practiced what you stated. Still, I get what you're saying.

The Moody Blues - Long Distance Voyager

I always liked the way the Moodies incorporated a "cosmic" sound into their music.  Long Distance Voyager also incorporates the album art into the flow of the music.  Each song represents an image from the cover.  To me, that was totally cool.
