Subject: Electric Slide
Hey everyone, I was just wondering if any of you knew what year the electric slide came out? I need to know this because I am doing a project for my AP American History project (AP exams are finished!!) and I am doing 1985, and for part of our project we have to have class participation. So, back to my question, do any of you know what year this awesome dance song came out? Thx!

Funny thing is, I'd have sworn this song was even earlier than that. Memory playing tricks, I always thought I'd heard it at school dances in 1987 and 88

I show it as 1990, off Marcia Griffiths' "Carousel" album.
Amazulu's "Montego Bay" sounds a lot like "Electric Boogie," and it was released in '87...

My youngest son is graduating from 6th grade and after the graduation cremony, they are having a dance. This week, his teacher has been showing them instructional tape on dances. He came home yesterday all excited about the new dances that he was learning. He wanted to show me the one that he liked the best. It was the Electric Slide! ;D

I now believe both '89 AND '90 are right. My guess is 12" singles (vinyl) and albums and other formats may have been printed at different times, but within that time frame. Thus, different sources on the net showing both years as correct. Thus, we cannot be faulted for being misinformed. ;) :)
We are all correct!!! :D :D :D

Your guess is correct, Hairspray. Singles are often released before the album is released.

Oh was it 90? I remember doing the "Electric Side" in Gym Class in 1992 I think it was.
Subject: Re: Electric Slide
I had never heard the song until at least 1990-1991---but have no idea how "dated" it was by that time!
Heck..I got married in 1992, and we actually did it at my wedding reception....pretty tricky in that big ol' wedding dress, too, but we all (my friends, hubby, and his friends) were big clubhoppers in the early 90's and we had a blast. ;D

I couldnt stand that dance. It was tolerable when people danced it to the actual song, but it didnt take long for some poor souls to want to dance the "electric slide" to ANY song that came on...AND usually it was an automatic BIG BUTT magnet. EVERYONE (male and female) who had an enormously huge butt seemed drawn to the dance floor to dance the slide and get numerous chances to turn and wag their huge ends at everyone who had the misfortune to watch this debacle...Naa, I put the electric slide right up there with the Macarena and Lambada as really bad dance ideas... :( Mullets and the electric slide...hand in hand...
Subject: Re: Electric Slide
The correct answer is 1989, as I believe Barbara is essentially asking what year the dance originated. In fact, there were actually two hit singles here in the U.S. based on the electric slide. As DJ Midas already mentioned, the first was "Electric Boogie" by Marcia Griffiths, which debuted on the charts in November of '89. It was quickly followed by "Shall We Dance (Electric Slide)" by Grandmaster Slice & Izzy Chill, in December of '89. However, both songs actually peaked on the charts in early '90. So I believe it's best summed up by saying that the fad was born in '89, and peaked in '90... :-)
