Subject: Music question - please help

Written By: SilentG on 05/16/02 at 05:01 a.m.

UURGh!!  I hope someone can help me with a very mysterious music question - sorry that I don't have a lot to go on (attention angela landsbury!!)

The early 80's, which is when I was most influenced by the music, is a dim memory for me cuz I was really young.  In I think 1981 or 2, there was a song on the radio that was popular at (I think) the same time as the Ghostbusters theme and Late in the Evening (by Paul Simon).

It was sung by a man, black I think, and it was an up-tempo funky, soul-y song about sex.  It started out with solo bass in the slap style that was popular in the Disco era (although the song was definitely not disco).  If I remember correctly, the lyrics were basically get-in-your-pants.

Is there anyone who has any idea what this song, or who the artist, might be?  I've been trolling 80's billboard chart sites, and asking my friends, but with no luck.

Thanks in advance!

SilentG.

Not much to go on, but I'll take a stab and say that you're most likely thinking of "Stay With Me Tonight" by Jeffrey Osborne, a moderate hit here in the U.S. in the Winter of '84. It was off his 1983 album, also titled Stay With Me Tonight. Fortunately, the album is still in print today on CD here in the U.S...

Yup, I just found the MP3, and that's it!!  I can't thank you enough - I would never have remembered it on my own.

Cheers,

WEELLLLL........

I actually DO have another question, one that's equally if not more arcane and oblique:

I don't know how I could have been so far off with the years for the song by Jeffrey that you pinpointed, but the other song I'm trying to track down is definitely not later than 1981 (I hope that for my sake it isn't earlier than 1980 - I wouldn't want the 70's police to nail me).

All I can say is that it was a New Wave song, it got pretty heavy airplay in Vancouver, Canada (which isn't conclusive, unfortunately), and it was remarkably similar to the Londonbeat song "I've Been Thinking About You".  The chord progression (which is a little weird) was almost exactly the same, and the hook had a similar melody and intonation.  From what I remember, tho, it wasn't a dance tune.

Any ideas?
