LOVED it!!! ;D Who were your favorites?
Subject: Re: punk rock
I thought it already had come back to a certain degree with bands like the Offspring and Sum 41 etc.
Subject: Re: punk rock
Do you mean like The Dead Kennedys and The Clash circa Sandinista! & Combat Rock. What other punk was about in the eighties? Apart from the clash and the Dead Kennedys I'm a bit of a 1977 - 1979 man myself.

I know of Sham 69 back in the 70s (Hurry up Harry!)
I think the closest to punk in the 80s was groups like 'The Jam' and 'Ruts' (just about).
The punk era kind of metamorphosed into Ska bands like 'Specials' and 'Selecter'.

Those are punk pop bands...watered down punk for the masses.
I love GBH and The Exploited. My first punk show was GBH in 1989. A whole lot of punk came out in the 80''s. It was just more underground than it is now.....

/quote]Maybe so but in a commercial sense it's as close as it gets today.I must admit I was thinking commercially rather than the underground stuff when I answered.

My brother played in a punk covers band a few years ago and it's amazing how popular they were with people getting all nostalgic for songs they probably didn't even like when they first came out !!
Subject: Re: punk rock
There were always punks throughout history, those who were the downtrodden, working class, fighters. In the late 70s, the media tried to crush the movement depicting punks as violent criminals based on their rough style and look, i.e. the bad guys in movies, tv, periodicals always had shaved heads, wore black leather, spiked jewelry, raped everyone, etc. Then in the 80s the 70s punk styles got commercialized and were called the New Wave. What an exploitation of a cool sub-culture whose real members are still poor and often sent to the front lines when there's a war!

How about Crass? Whatever happened to them?
Subject: Re: punk rock
Probably heard them in the mix of all the great punk, but does anyone recall Pearl Harbour and the Explosions? Pearl was a "Betty Boop" like little chick who sang with that "boop" like boop, there was some swell harmony on the song "Driving."
Also my personal punkabilly fave was Robert Gordon with his Fresh Fish Special doo and honey like baritone in "Something's Gonna Happen."
If you really want some psycho punkabilly, have a listen to the college stations bringing back the 50s rockabilly - some of that music just makes you want to ROCK! Check out Sleepy Laboef, The Phantom, Dale Hawkins, Eddie Cochran, et al..It's Summertime music so ROCK ON wit yo bad self, heppa y vamos arriba yeeehawwwww C'mon Everbody!!!!
