Subject: Movies that defined the Eighties

Written By: Serpico on 04/30/02 at 01:21 p.m.

Ok...this has been on my mind a lot lately. I work and live in NYC and often become nostalgic for the late Eighties when I started working on Wall Street. There was just a different feel back then. Can't really explain it any other way. For me, "Working Girl" recaptures that time and feel so well. What do you all think? Any movie that captures that Eighties feeling?

Most of the teen movies that came out in the eighties define the decade. I know I long for the eighties every time I watch them.

"The Breakfast Club" was a pretty good snapshot of a day in detention... although I don't remember my detentions every being quite so eventful.

Most of the John Hughes films, actually.

Looking back to my senior year in high school (1991-1992), Ferris Bueller's Day Off is another movie that is nostalgic for me.   ;D

I would agree that all of the John Hughes teen movies defined what it was like to have been a teenager in the 80s. Another movie that really screams out the 80s to me is The Legend of Billie Jean. Wall Street is another movie that defines the greed and materialism of the 80s... :)

I think John Hughes movies mostly defined the decade. Science fiction films were kinda dying down at the end of the decade though. What ever happened to Hughes anyways?

I would rank it this way...

1)  Back to the Future
2)  Raiders of the Lost Ark
3)  Dirty Dancing
4)  Romancing the Stone (you gotta admit, that was an awesome movie)
5)  The Karate Kid (but none of its sequels!)

and that's my top five :)

This one isn't the epitome of 80's movies but it always takes me back when I watch it - "Real Genius" with Val Kilmore. It's on HBO all the time. They play Tears For Fears "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" during the end credits.

Also, not a defining 80's movie, but a good movie from the 80's, The Outsiders!  Lot of heavy hitters in that one!  And if you like Matt Dillon - Rumble Fish was cool too!

I'd have to say "Pretty In Pink" defines the decade for me, with "Valley Girl" running a close second.

PIP was all about the 80's attitude...the clothes, the music, etc.  There's one thing that always bugged me about that movie, though.  Why does Andie say "What about prom, Blaine?".  Around my neck of the woods, we always called it the Prom.

I always liked the movie "Explorers".  It was along the same lines as "The Goonies".  That was one of the first movies we played in the VCR.

About Tony Hawk:  I was a wannabe skateboarder in the 80s.  I tried for years, but could hardly get the thing off the ground.  I bought skateboarding books back then and they talked about Tony Hawk and how he was one of the best skateboarders in the world.  I admired him because he was one of the only ones that rode like I did, right foot forward.  And now like 15 years later we are just finally starting to hear about him on TV and stuff.

In the early 80's the industry was just learning about how computers can make our lives easier to live with. The movie Electric Dreams pushed the imagination and allowed us to gain a deeper knowledge and love for what we can do. Unfortunately, this film is out of print on vhs and never made it to DVD. I remember the first time I saw this film, it made an impact on me which may have an answer of why I love working with computers as much as I do and own one of my own. I've tried for years to rent the film one last time, all video stores (BlockBuster, Hollywood Video, Movie Gallery) no longer keep it, in the inventory. It's time we make a stand and tell MGM & United Artist we would like to see and feel the magic all over again.

Wall Street---showed the greed and materalism that was rampant in the 80's

Ghostbusters---A very Reagan era film, and best comedy of the 80's

First Blood---dealing with the affer effect of Vietnam in the early 80's.  The first Rambo film, was a good serious film that had some kind of plausibility to it.

Ferris Bueller---best 80's teen film

A few of these listed are like some i still watch all the time.  But i also liked;
D.A.R.Y.L.
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai

Dreamscape
Space Camp (goofy, but didn't everybody like it?)
Streets of Fire
The Color of Money
Iron Eagle (cheap Top Gun)

Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and Desperately Seeking Susan are my all time favorite movies. Ever. :) They should have a course in High School on how to get through high school. Required viewing for that class should be the entire collection of Teen movies by John Hughes. Nevermind all of the shallow teen movies of today, no one will remeber them in five years, except maybe American Pie.
