Subject: School dance?...School Social?... or SOCK-HOP?

It's funny how many words mean the same thing........but are spelled and said a different way. Some cool 8), some dorky, very dorky. We used to have sock-hops! This sounds stupid! I would personally liked it to be called "School Dance"! ;)

We just called it a school dance most of the time. The first dance of the year was called the Welcome Back dance and then of course they had Homecoming and all that junk. They would also occasionally have sock-hops, where everyone dressed up in clothes from the 50's. I always thought school dances were boring, which is why I only went to a few. I had a much better time causing trouble with my friends.

We had the normal dances (homecoming, prom, morp, sadie hawkins etc) and then we had stomps. These were usually every other friday. They were pretty fun.

Ours were just plain old school dances. The only difference was in which school was holding the dance.
Our local school's dances were pretty lame. But whenever we could, we would go to the schools across town. Not only did they have a bigger gym, they had better dj's ( and hence, better music), better snacks and sodas (with better prices) and cuter guys!!! ;D :-* ;D :-*
As an addes bonus: when we asked a cute guy we didn't know to slow dance, he ALWAYS said yes! :-* :-* :-*
Unlike the losers at our own school......

A few times my sophomore year of high school ('86-'87), administrators got a wild hair and decided to have informal dances after home football games. I don't think they could be classified as sock hops...with Kool Moe Dee, Prince and Run DMC playing, I think it'd better be classified as a 'booty dance' ;-). Not that my lame @ss was dancing :-).

We also had sock hops in jr. high school and you had to be in your sock feet. And then after the dance, you had to throw away your socks because they were just nasty! Now my oldest son, who is in jr high, has mixers-same thing as a dance, just a new word for it.

I think most of ours were called school dances. We had a Welcome Back dance the night of Freshman/New Student Orientation (about a week before classes started), Homecoming, Halloween, Valentine's/Sweetheart Dance, Sadie Hawkins, Prom, Morp...also on occasion we had DJs during our lunch hour on Fridays.
I quit going to school dances my junior year when I discovered the nightclub scene...the lights and sound drew me in...

We had school dances. Sock Hops were when the dance had a 50s or 60s theme to them. These were usually organized by the teachers along with our parents, as the kids wouldn't have chosen to have a sock hop on their own! ;D
