Subject: David Lee Roth Or Sammy Hagar
Written By: RockandRollFan on 04/24/02 at 07:18 p.m.
Or as I once asked...Van Halen or Van Hagar?
IMO both contributed well to the band, in different ways....Dave could handle the acoustic duties (Ice Cream Man) and was quite the showman....while early on in his 'turn' Sammy was allowed to play guitar and also had a 'zestful' personality. I think that they were two completely different bands, hence the different names (Which makes sense...remember the Journey Topic?)so IF I had to choose I'd take Dave only for the fact that he was the original.

I liked David Lee Roth much better. I think that is because VH with DLR was much funner....Sammy seemed to bring deeper songs to the band....not that that is a bad thing.

I like both, but 1984 is my favorite album so I guess that makes me side with Roth...

DLR gets the nod 'cause of his swaggar and personality.
And the overall sound of Van Halen was better when DLR was there. Not that I don't like Sammy...the first few albums with him in VH were great.

;D I liked both. I thought both brought thier own different style and singing abilities. However, I always like the original line up in most bands. So I go with David Lee Roth.

(Hard to decide...)
David Lee Roth had more of a personality & defines Van Halen.
Sammy Hagar's also great too.
So... I'll go with Diamond Dave. 8)
He is the orignal Van Halen frontman.

Wow! Talk about raising the dead...
Anyway, I used to be a regular visitor to Van Halen News desk.Com, a VH fan site, and the following is a message from the webmaster on the status of the site, and his views of a potential new Van Halen album from about a year ago...
Current Status Of This Site
July 2, 2002 - Apologies for the lack of updates here in the past month. Hopefully this article will help to explain why there have been no updates recently.
To be brutally honest, I've lost the inspiration. No longer do I look forward to jumping on the computer every day to scour cyberspace for every tidbit of Van Halen news and rumours.
After being a die-hard Van Halen fan from my early teenage years right through to adulthood (I'm about to turn 32), I now find myself completely disinterested in the whole Van Halen saga.
Will they get back with Dave? Will they get back with Sammy? Will they release a new album? Will they tour?
I don't care any more.
The whole Roth/Hagar tour hasn't excited me one iota. Maybe if they bring the show down here to Australia I might get into it, but after what seems like years and years of inaction in the Van Halen camp, I'm just not interested.
I had originally written many paragraphs for this article about why I'm so disillusioned, but when I proof-read it I found that I was saying nothing new that I hadn't already said in the past, so I'll spare you the boredom of reading it all again.
All I can say is that it seems moot to have a site dedicated to reporting news related to a rock band that has been inactive for the past four years, has no singer, no manager and no record label. I'd be better off running The Knack News Desk (apologies to fans of The Knack). At least they're still putting out albums!
I'm optimistic that the band and subsequently this site will continue and I encourage you to stop by every now and then to check out what's happening in the world surrounding Van Halen. When things start happening again, I'll be here to report it.
One of my greatest pleasures used to be the excitement of walking out of a record store with a brand new Van Halen album. Hopefully I'll get to experience that feeling again one day.
In the meantime I'll continue to dedicate my time to my family, my real job and the never-ending crusade towards lowering my golf handicap and getting that elusive hole in one.

For me, "1984" was the best of Roth's Van Halen, and "5150" was the ultimate Hagar Van Halen, and I loved both albums.
It's strange how much the band changed with the singer switch. With Roth, Van Halen were rock stars. With Hagar, the band were rock musicians.
I like both singers, with Van Halen and as solo artists.

My vote goes to David Lee Roth. His voice was more suitable for the early VH tunes and he had far more carisma than Sammy. I liked Roth even better when he went solo and teamed up with Steve Vai. Yankee Rose, Tobacco Road, and Just like paradise proved how well Roth could do without the support of Eddy's leads.
Sammy Hagar seems to screech more than sing. The only tune I ever liked from Hagar was "Your love is driving me crazy" from Three Lock Box. When Sammy joined VH, they sounded to me far too commercial (although their slide really began with the 1984 album). From that point on VH lost their edge and sold out to the yuppy crowd. But what the hell? It got them the airplay didn't it?
Subject: Neither.

Hagar gets my vote, hated DLR's attitude toward his fans... I wonder if Dennis Leary made that song about him.... Man what an A$$hole!
