I am going to be the laughing stock of the board, but that's so nothing new. I refuse to be categorized in with those lacking "postitude".

We Didn't Start the Fire
Subject: Re: What Are Your Favorite Billy Joel Songs?
i like we didnt start the fire! but then again, im just a kid...
i also like its still rock and roll to me
Subject: Re: What Are Your Favorite Billy Joel Songs?
Funnily enought I dont own a single Billy Joel album or Cd BUT in the past decade I have seen him 5 times in concert. So my opinions are based not on how I hear the songs on the radio, but how he performed them on stage.
I love Piano Man - he really gets into and so does the crowd.
We didnt start the fire: Brilliant because of the complexity of the lyrics - the history of the world - and he never misses a beat when singing it.
Goodnight Saigon: He starts this with the sound of choppers so loud, so deep and resonating that you can feel it in your stomach and your heart starts beating in time with the chopper blades. All his crew, from lightning to the roadies come out on stage to sing the chorus. Its a very moving moment in any of his concerts.
Big Shot: I love when he does this because he generally acts up while singing it - the first time I saw him do it he climbed the stage scaffolding towering above the stage and then couldnt get down !
Still Rock and Roll to Me: I guess this is my favourite full stop - just cos its a fun song.
You're Only Human: has a soft spot in my heart because it was played at my friends funeral after her suicide.

Devin, I have no problems with your taste whatsoever. You 'n me, kid, I got your back. (Although, I know enough to know that "kids" these days can take me to school so fast, so how 'bout you get my back?)

I like "We Didn't Start The Fire". It's very cleverly done. It's even educational! Shoot.... I'm not laughing. I'm smiling and smiling with you. :)
Subject: Re: What Are Your Favorite Billy Joel Songs?
1. We Didn't Start the Fire (who's laughing, lang?)
2. River of Dreams
3. Captain Jack
But honestly, he has so many great songs it's difficult to choose only three. This would be a different list a few days from now, no doubt.
Subject: Re: What Are Your Favorite Billy Joel Songs?
There's no limit to your faves, so list away!!! ;)
Subject: Re: What Are Your Favorite Billy Joel Songs?
I'm no music critic, so I really can't back up in words why I like 'em but...
1) Anthony's Song (I live in Jersey--is that all you get for your money??)
2) Scenes from an Italian Restaurant (is that the name????) tho' I must say every time at the end I wanna know where Brenda and Eddie are NOW! (I know, I know, he can't tell us more cuz he's told us already!!) but I still wanna know... makes me sad, I guess..
also, I love the music in the "Downeaster Alexa" song (not sure of that name, either..duh!)
:)
Subject: Re: What Are Your Favorite Billy Joel Songs?
Great subject! I've always loved Billy Joel's music. As Wicked Lester pointed out it is rather hard to narrow it down, but here are a few of my favs:
1. "My Life"
2. "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)"
3. "Say Goodbye To Hollywood"
4. "It's Still Rock And Roll To Me"
;)
Subject: Re: What Are Your Favorite Billy Joel Songs?
1. We didn't Start The Fire (In fact, it's next on my station's playlist)
2. Goodnight Saigon
3. You May Be Right (no other song quite describes me so accurately)
Subject: Re: What Are Your Favorite Billy Joel Songs?
Uptown Girl. My former girlfriend LOVED that song when it was done by Westlife, but IMO, they butchered it... (with very sharpened pronged forks - as they do).
Subject: Re: What Are Your Favorite Billy Joel Songs?
1. We Didn't Start the Fire (Langdon, no one is laughing :))
2. Piano Man
3. It's My Life
4. It's Still Rock N Roll to me
I love to hear his music on the radio. It makes me wanna dance....Good thing I don't though, my co workers would think I had flipped my lid...again ;)
Subject: Re: What Are Your Favorite Billy Joel Songs?
My favorites are:
Just the Way You Are (he no longer does this in concert!)
You May Be Right (this is my theme song! You may be right/I may be crazy/But it just may be a lunatic you're looking for)
Uptown Girl (very 4 Seasons-esque)

Those sound like pertinent lyrics for me, definitely.
Subject: Re: What Are Your Favorite Billy Joel Songs?
I'm probably the only one here that cannot stand this man's music. Am I alone in this?
Subject: Re: What Are Your Favorite Billy Joel Songs?
The Billy Joel concert at the Miami Arena in spring '90 was the first arena show I went to. It was a blast! Cyndi Lauper was a guest and came out and sang some Zeppelin song (I only knew it was a Zeppelin song 'cause my roommate, a classic rock fan, knew it - I thought the song sucked).
Some of my fave Billy Joel songs are:
Piano Man
Pressure (one of his best 80's songs, definitely)
You're Only Human/Second Wind
Only the Good Die Young
Still Rock and Roll to Me
Allentown
Uptown Girl
Tell Her About It
Captain Jack
Anthony's Song
Subject: Re: What Are Your Favorite Billy Joel Songs?
Like a few others have mentioned :
Big Shot (it describes one of my friends perfectly !)
and I've always been really partial to
Say Goodbye to Hollywood

"This is the time" is my All time favorite. followed by "Allen Town" and "Moving Out"
Subject: Re: What Are Your Favorite Billy Joel Songs?
I've been cruising these eighties web sites for some time now. It was this topic that convinced me to join as I'm a huge Billy Joel fan!!! I'm proud to say I've always been from way back. You know how some musical preferences come and go, Joel always stayed with me.
So here goes in no particular order...(this is tough as I treasure his whole catalog and have every CD)
1- Scenes From An Italian Restuarant--A great song that I can relate to in a number of ways.
2- This is The Time-- It was my Senior Prom song. Also a song I can relate to.
3- Always a Woman-- Well I love women and all that makes them such special creatures. A beautiful song!!!
Anyway...I can list so many more but I will keep it to three.

Subject: Re: What Are Your Favorite Billy Joel Songs?
Let's not forget "Miami 2017".....I went to the Concert for NYC in October where Billy Joel performed the song. It was very emotional considering the cirucumstances.

Piano Man
The Entertainer
(bought those two on singles when they first came out)

Only the Good Die Young
(his 2 best songs IMHO)
Subject: Re: What Are Your Favorite Billy Joel Songs?
Now you're asking a question! ;D
- River of dreams
- The longest time
- Christie Lee
- We didn't start the fire
- Leave a tender moment alone
- This night

- Keeping the faith
- My favourite is Uptown girl
Subject: Re: What Are Your Favorite Billy Joel Songs?
It's all about soul!!!
Subject: Re: What Are Your Favorite Billy Joel Songs?
1. Pressure, Great video, The exploding television and the water coming out was great for its day! ;D
2. Moving Out (Anthony's Song) I can still remember that there were 2 versions of this song, one with the truck at the end and one without. Me and my best friend used to work together in the Original Hooters and we would bet which version it would be before the end of the song!
3.Dont ask me why.... Great song and it came out my first year of High School! It was my descriptive song!
4. Big Shot Had an Italian friend that fit this description very well, we could never take him anywhere! :P
Subject: Re: What Are Your Favorite Billy Joel Songs?
Well, I guess I am the biggest sap here. My favorite Billy Joel song is "Just the way you are". My husband and I chose that as our wedding song when we got married in 1994. :-* A very close second to that is "Don't ask me why".
Subject: Re: What Are Your Favorite Billy Joel Songs?
BILLY IS A GUILTY PLEASURE
some of his songs are lame
you're only human being the worst
but i like
Pressure (great video made for this)
Scenes from an Italian Restaurant
Just the way you are
i goto extremes
Subject: Re: What Are Your Favorite Billy Joel Songs?
Captain Jack is killer too
i guess it is about a heroin addict
Piano Man (great)
i think of the crappy video made for it now
it was a literal translation of the song...bad idea...
i wish they never made a video of the song
Subject: Re: What Are Your Favorite Billy Joel Songs?
i bought his greatest hits volume one and two (the old fashioned clam style of double cd's)
and they put the friggin single versions of some songs on there!
assholes!
they since fixed the problem on later pressings of this CD
but they took out the live version of say goodbye to hollywood
and used the studio version
the live is probably better...
not sure if i should buy the new version of volume one and two
we shall see
Subject: Re: What Are Your Favorite Billy Joel Songs?
I'm laughing too hard to answer this question!!
Was this supposed to be serious?
Peace,
Loren
Subject: Re: What Are Your Favorite Billy Joel Songs?
I had the old Billy Joel Greatest Hits but someone stole it >:(
I bought the newer version since it has We Didn't Start The Fire and others that weren't on the older version. The new version doesn't have the live Say Goodbye to Hollywood and it doesn't have the cool booklets either >:(
Anyway, Piano Man is Billy's #1 song in my book. Besides the songs above, I also like Uptown Girl, Movin' Out, She's Got A Way, Only The Good Die Young, Scenes From An Italian Restaurant, Miami 2017 and New York State Of Mind.
I love the sound of a piano. It's probably why I'm such a big Billy Joel and Elton John fan.

Subject: Re: What Are Your Favorite Billy Joel Songs?
i just got the remastered billy joel greatest hits volume one and two
the studio version of say goodbye to hollywood is better than the live version that was on the unmastered version
they have the album versions of just the way you are
and pressure on their...the longer versions...about time too
i am gonna ditch my other earlier copy...i hate clutter in my home and cd collection!
cheers!
i've been trying to get into the new White Stripes CD but can't
it sounds like an 80's recording in some ways too...
billy joel...some of his stuff is lame...so is phil collins in a way...but i still like them...
he shoulda called himself William Joel...
Subject: Re: What Are Your Favorite Billy Joel Songs?
Hmm.. although i'm not a BJ fan ( ;) ) I am kinda partial to "You're Only Human (Second Wind)". I was really touched by the lyrics and the accompanying video. The "Pressure" video was pretty neat as well.

Leave A Tender Moment Alone
Uptown Girl
Pressure
and This Night which I believe was only a "B" side song but to me still made the grade as a top song.
Subject: Re: What Are Your Favorite Billy Joel Songs?
My favorite Billy Joel songs are A Matter of Trust and Tell Her About It in that order.
Subject: Re: What Are Your Favorite Billy Joel Songs?
So many interesting songs...
Captain Jack (I knew that guy in high school)
The Entertainer (great glimpse of the music industry)
Scenes From An Italian Restaurant (start out with wine, end up with pills... Also, didn't everyone know their local "Brenda & Eddie")
Allentown (a little guy's view of America's socio-economic woes)
Big Shot (memories of an old girlfriend)
Only the Good Die Young (My friends and I at the CYO dances on Saturday night)
The Angry Young Man ("... I had my pointless point of view..." so much for ideology -- the older I get, the more I relate)
Vienna (words of wisdom being handed down - BTW, an old bull and young bull are looking down on a herd of cows...)
My favorites...
Honesty
Always a Woman
Sleeping With the Television On
