Subject: Long Hair, Short Hair Or No Hair...?

Which did you like best in the 80's? This applies to both guys & gals! Have your preferences changed since then?

I couldn't help but drool when I seen a guy with long hair! :P

However, It never really mattered to me, so long as it was clean. ;)

Back in the day I preferred men with long hair.  Now, I think that they look better with shorter hair.  There are a few with long hair that still look good.  As long as they keep it neat.

I assume you mean how we liked/like hair on the heads of the *other* sex...

Really had no preference back then.  Now, I prefer short hair - stylishly short, no butch haircuts sported by chicks going to NOW conventions.

I prefer short hair..It really depends on the man some men can pull off long hair and look good, but I think short hair looks best...I don't however like shaved heads.

For me, it's all about the attitude. If a man can pull off long hair without making me wonder if he takes more time to do his than I do and, God forbid, he own more product, then I'm all for it. Out here, sadly, that never seems to be the case. There's something about an overly-coiffed man of any hair length that smacks of checking himself out in department store windows, if ya know what I mean.

My question is very general and all around. So, this is what I think:

Long hair - Sexy on both genders

Short hair - On girls, No Way above the chin length. On guys, no crew cuts.

No hair - Some guys can pull this off with good results, even sexy results! Girls, No way. Just think G.I. Jane.  :P  Yuk.

I used to love guys with long hair. Now I prefer it to be short (no locer than chin length).  Women, IMO, can get away with just about any style, with the exception of shaved heads.

Uh-oh, Hairspray, you and me is gonna have to go round and round. The longest hair on my head is maybe all of two inches and I happen to look quite pixie-ish, thank you very much. I love short hair on women. It's less to hide behind and a bolder statement. Not that I don't admire flowing locks as well... just not on me.

Men: Most look better with short hair, although there is a sort of collar-length cut (not a mullet) that looks good on a lot of men. Really long hair looks good on a few guys, but just looks dumb on most of them. Shaved heads look yummy on a few men: Michael Stipe, J. August Richards. (I have to throw Patrick Stewart's name in here too, though he does not shave his head.) A great movie for admiring varying hair lengths is The Mummy: John Hannah has a sort of generic guy haircut, Brendan Fraser has longish floppy hair, Oded Fehr has really long hair and Arnold Vosloo (Imhotep) has a shaved head.

Women: With the right kind of face, short haircuts can be beautiful. I tend to like short and layered better than short and spiky. Really long hair, though, can also look either great or geeky depending on the person. I mostly don't like shaved heads except for Sinéad O'Connor.

For women, it doesn't really matter to me, as long as it looks good on her.

For guys, back in the 80's I preferred guys with long hair, or some other sort of "exotic" hairstyle. (Odd colors, shaved, spiked, dreadlocks ect.)

When I was working at the comic book store in the 80's we would get a lot of "punks" and "goths" coming in to the store.  The manager would always run and hide, leaving me to wait on them. (He was from a very rural part of New Hampshire, and was convinced these people were aliens bent on sucking out his brain with a bendy straw).  Most of them were really nice guys, and I had a lot of fun flirting for hours at a time.

A few years back, I had a bad experience with a guy who had long hair, and would not look at another long-haired guy at all.

Nowadays, hair length on a guy doesn't matter to me, as long as it looks good on him.  But I'm still more inclined to give a guy with an "exotic" 'do a second look. (even if it's just to wonder if he really is an alien.)

;D ;D ;D ;DJust as a clarification, patrick stewart DOES shave his head sometimes--not a lot of people notice much of a difference, however.then of course there is Montel williams.he was in the army at a time when shaved heads weren't allowed;he shaved his head and was told he wasn'r supposed to do that.later he joined the marines, where shaved heads are ok.The Everly Brothers had to shave their heads when they joined the marines, and they actually looked better than a lot of young guys do today(look for photos on the net). But they only had to be completely bald when they first joined .I don't think it was their favorite look, but there was an advantage in that when they absentmindedly stuck a lit cigarette behind their ear like a pencil, they didn't have any hair to accidentally sret on fire.Nonetheless, that wasn't their favorite look, and in beteenn reserve duty, they went as long as possible without cutting their hair.Cheers! :D :D :D :D :D :D

thru the 80's I had the Annie Lennox look - never more than 2cm long, spikey, blonde on top and black at the back.

Then - on Dec 6 1987 (not that the date is embedded in my brain or anything !!) after a week of home bleaching, I went to the salon to get it redyed to get just the right shade of white (to be a bridesmaid a week later).  Well my hair said NOOOOOOOO and turned into jelly and slid down my back onto the salon floor.  I was left with sparse teeny blonde tufts.  On the day of the wedding the hairdressing literally took each hair and curled it over her finger and set it in place.  In the photos it looks like I have more hair than I actually had !

So then in Feb 88 I left the country !! I came back 3 years later with shoulderblade length brunette curly hair - that was how it grew back.  I didnt go near a hairdressers for 5 years.

So for the 90s I wore it just above bum length and occassionally dying it black for parties.

On saturday it got chopped to above my shoulders.  I am still not use to it !!!!

At the start of the 80s my hair was down to my shoulders, hanging limply is greasy, straggly clumps. I was 17 in 1980. At school there was a "badge of honour" thing going on over how long you could go without washing your hair at all. My mate Pete won - 3 months. This look went with dirty, oily denims (or, if you could afford it, leathers) with the logos of your favourite bands carefully embroidered on the back. AC/DC, Rush, Scorpions, Led Zep,  Black Sabbath, Judas Priest etc...
Mine said "The Runaways" , "The Clash" and "Talking Heads".

Throughout the early 80s my hair got gradually cleaner and shorter. By 1984 it had settled down to a clipped cut with a short quiff sort of thing going on at the front. I guess I must have been influenced by Morrissey of The Smiths. It's pretty much stayed like that ever since.

I mean the "boy cuts" girls get sometimes. I don't find them to be femenine at all. Women tend to look mostly masculine after one of those cuts. No offense.

As far as "baldies" go, the only one in your particular list I think looked "handsome" with his bald head was Yul Brynner. I do not find the others in your list to be handsome, even with hair. Well, I guess Brad Pitt would qualify as handsome to most.

That's as much of a general opinion you'll get outta me!  ;D   ;)

Well, in the 80's, I had shoulder length hair.  I have tried to grow it longer, but the longer it gets, the curlier it gets so it always looks the same length.

I have always usually preferred short hair on men, however it depends on the person.

Now, it's a little shorter than shoulder length.  I'm trying to grow it again, but it's doing the same thing. ::)

I've worn my hair the same style my whole life: short. I am a guy. I used to want long hair when I was like 10 years when long hair was in about 1988. In 1990 I got the Vanilla Ice spikes which I hated. I remember everybody had spiked hair back then. That was the last time I ever got a specific style for a haircut.

Women: only a few women can pull the short hair length off: Lisa Stansfield, Halle Berry, Nia Long, and Natile Imbruglia. Natile Imbruglia and Nia Long have long hair now. Right now shoulder length hair is in for women. For me womens hair I mostly like it to be either shoulder length or long.

As for the bald head look on guys its kind of getting overpopular. Alot of guys don't look good with a bald head. Rick Fox(L.A. Lakers)tried a bald head and I don't think it works for him. I don't think it works for Kobe Bryant or Doug Christie(sacramento Kings)either. Anybody seen Ben Wallace of the Detroit Pistons? He's trying to bring back the afro. I think Michael Jordan, and Montel Williams look good with a bald head. I like the braided hair like Allen Iverson or Carmelo Anthony(Syracuse) wear.

For most white guys(that would be me) the long hair went out a long time ago.

But women, especially in the corporate world, were trying to add some masculinity into their look just to be taken seriously. That's also why the big shoulder pads. Remember, this was a time when women were still not quite up to the same level as men. They were not equal. They were being paid less and still were mostly hired for "female" type jobs. But it was progressing!

I've always dug the short, spiky look on guys.  Thank gods that shorter hair is "in" now for guys.  I just hate long, scraggly hair on men....the worst were the "hair" metal bands of the 80's.  Ugh!

Something about it just skeeves me out.  When I see a picture of Rob Thomas from Matchbox 20, with that ambiguous longish stringy hair, I have to turn away in disgust!
