Wookies. They're better to look at than Ewoks. I'd rather listen to the whining Chewy did as communication than to Ewoks going "Yup-Yup" all over the place.  :P  Chewy is big and strong - believably.

Well, while I'm not a Star Wars buff, I prefererred the ewoks.  Only because I thought they were way cute.  ;D  
As for Jar Jar, I did think he was an annoying creature, though he didn't tick me off nearly as much as he bugged my husband.  He thought he was the worst part of Episode 1..my only thought is that when they put him in there, it was to attract kids.  I mean, adults, like my husband, were just crazy about seeing the movie because he'd been such a huge fan of the original trilogy..they'd have gone regardless.  But Jar Jar made the little kids laugh.  Sure there was Anniken, as a kid, but we all knew how he was going to eventually turn out!  ;)  So the kids that went with mom and dad had "someone" that they could somehow relate to with Jar Jar.  
Personally, my favorite has always been R2D2 anyway... :)

Yeah. I agree that the Ewoks and Jar Jar were essential for the kiddies.

From a marketing standpoint, toys and merchandise are huge and kids are the biggest target.

From a parental standpoint, it does make it more of a pleasant family movie outing when the kids have something that keeps their attention.

I'm not quite sure about that.  I believe the song played at the end of Return of the Jedi (before the credits) was entitled something similar to "Ewok Victory Celebration".  Of course, they weren't named in the dialogue of any of the movies, but then, neither were the Gammorian Guards, Quewaa (sp), Wampa, Calamari, Rodan (sp... Greedo's race), or a ton of other races...
