Subject: Forgotten 80s song of the week is...
"19" by Paul Hardcastle.
I thought it would be a fun idea to start posting a forgotten 80s "song of the week" to discuss. I got this idea from the radio station I listen to, MIX 102.9, which has a totally 80s lunch hour everyday @ noon. At the very end of the program, they dig up a "long lost song of the 80s" and play it on the radio. I've heard some real gems on there! They played this one (19) on there Friday. I had never heard it before, but I really, really loved it! I also like that song he (Paul Hardcastle) did called "Rainforest". I promise to have a true hidden treasure dug up every week! Anyway, feel free to post your thoughts, memories, opinions, etc. on the Forgotten 80s Song of the Week.
Rock Steady,
CP

I liked the song... but it took a little while to grow on me. No real specific memories though, other than remembering it playing on the radio when we would play basketball. ;D

I had actually never heard "19" until I bought an 80's cd a few years back... eek!

You couldn't get away from it when it came out in the U.K they played it all the time.

cool !
ever since I typed that 10 minutes ago I have been sitting here humming nnnnnnnnnnnnineteen. Argh - Cant get rid of it now !!!!!
Subject: Re: Forgotten 80s song of the week is...
I've been singing 'Reap the wild wind'since I read the Ultravox thread earlier, thankfully not such a bad song to have on my mind!! :)
Subject: Re: Forgotten 80s song of the week is...
"19" was alright, IMO. I remember not wanting to hear anymore of Vietnam at one point. It's been long since I last heard the song (and since I heard about Vietnam incessantly). I wouldn't mind it as much now. I wouldn't go buy the cd or anything.
Subject: Re: Forgotten 80s song of the week is...
"19" was the very first 12-inch single I bought (at a Musicland in the mall when record stores actually sold records...). The Destruction Mix on the B-Side is the better of two mixes featured here IMO (the Extended Mix on the A), plus a bonus track on the B, "The Asylum (It'z Weird)" is pretty decent.
I remember hearing segments of another version on the radio (probably from a mixshow), perhaps on import? Haven't tried really hard to hunt it down...
"19" had steady rotation in my days @ Five-O...mixed well after FGTH's "Relax"....

Another forgotten song, IMO, is "Pump Up The Volume" by M.A.R.R.S.
Does anyone know what the letters in the group's name stood for?

No, but they need women. ;) Great song BTW.
How 'bout "Beat Dis" by Bomb the Bass? That could be a forgotten song (heard it on one of my old mixtapes yesterday).

Love that song! I love the bit that goes' put the needle on the record...and the drum beat goes like this' Fantasitic dance tune.
Subject: Re: Forgotten 80s song of the week is...
I thought "19" was okay, but the stuttering part gets annoying after a while. I do have the song on a compilation but don't listen to it very often. :-/

Outstanding. There are several versions of this song available for download if you look around (at least 5), at least one of which is mentioned by another poster.

Another lulu. I think this forum is my new paradise -

No, and this is a GREAT question. I'll look into it. Incidentally, there are no fewer than 13 versions of this song (at least I have 13). One is mixed over Michael Jackson's 'Bad'.
BTW, whoever came up with the idea of the forgotten 80s "song of the week is a GENIUS (Cosmic Princess, perhaps?). Keep them going.

The best I can do so far is this: The band was formed in 1987 in London, and
the members were Martyn Young, Steven Young, Rudy Tambala, and Alex Ayuli.
The first letter in their first name only spells "MARS", but I'll keep working on it.

I just have one question. If "19" was about the Vietnam War, and if only Americans and Vietnamese were fighting it, how does Paul Hardcastle know about it? Isn't he British or Australian or something? I don't know if any European countries (maybe the USSR) were involved in this conflict. ???

Two clarifications here.
Paul Hardcastle's "19" is not the Vietnam one. It's the robo-one ;)
Redgum's "(I Was Only) 19" is the Australian Vietnam one. And believe it or not, Australians *were* sent into Vietnam to support US forces.
Subject: Re: Forgotten 80s song of the week is...
Paul Hardcastles's "19" is about Vietnam. Go to my station webpage sometime, request that song and listen to it. It talks about the average age of the US soldier in Vietnam being 19, among other things...
Subject: Re: Forgotten 80s song of the week is...
Oops, pardon me, then. I blame BrianMannixGirl for insinuating the opposite :P
The Aussie one is written from a first-person standpoint of a survivor, BTW.
Subject: Re: Forgotten 80s song of the week is...
Actually thats so bizarre - I had no idea the Hardcastle 19 song was also about Vietnam !
Gosh America - I wouldnt be saying it too loud that Aussies weren't in Vietnam - we lost way too many boys over there, we had the draft just like the US did. My dad was fortunate to miss the draft due to the type of job he had - but my mums first fiance died over there and he was 18yrs & 2 months old. I worked at the Vietnam Veterans Counselling Service 10 years ago and it was a devestating stressful job dealing with men who have never fitted into the real world since their return.
Thundervamp - what is your "station webpage" ? I want to listen to the Hardcastle version lyrics.

There were British men fighting out there too,but at the end of the day I would say from all the media coverage ,T.V documentories, books, survivors accounts etc etc it's pretty easy to find out as much or as little as you want about Vietnam. It's not an exclusive to Americans alone.
Subject: Re: Forgotten 80s song of the week is...
There's absolutly loads of forgotten songs. I actually never hear anything by Yazoo anymore, apart from 'Only You'. Great tracks like 'Nobodys Diary' and 'Situation' seem to be lost.
Subject: Re: Forgotten 80s song of the week is...
Why is Yahoo known as 'Yaz' in the States? It's not like Bananarama is known as 'Banana' in the States.
I have the Upstairs at Eric's CD. I love it. For the longest time back in the 80's, I'd only hear 'Situation' late at night on pop station's mix shows, and never knew who it was or what the name of the song was. We just called it 'The Move-Out song'.
'19' got a decent bit of airplay in So. Florida back in '83 or so.
The song does drone on a bit with all the 'nnnnnnnnninteeen''s, but I do think it's a great song. Haven't heard anything else Paul Hardcastle has done, but I'd be willing to listen to his stuff based on '19'.

I actually have no idea why. In England, we had 'Yazz and the plastic poulation' in '88, but yazoo were around in the early 80's. Im sure someone of this board will know the reason.
Subject: Re: Forgotten 80s song of the week is...
I read in one of the music magazines at the time(I can no longer remember which one :-[ ) that there was already a band in America called Yazoo when the UK Yazoo were about to make their first release.
So, to avoid confusion they "agreed" to shorten their name.
I have never heard of an American band by either name, so I'm wondering if there is a "story behind the story".
Anyone?...
Subject: Re: Forgotten 80s song of the week is...
Hey.. just dusted of an old 80's cd and heard "She's a beauty" by the Tubes... I was totally lovin' it... I always remember when that song played origianally I couldn't figure out what would "cost you a dollar first"... but I liked it anyway...
haha!
