Subject: That 80's show... SUX or NO
I was let down...... ???
Subject: Re: That 80's show... SUX or NO
hey rubix... i started another thread, then i noticed this one.....anywho, this is what i had to say:
was it just me or did you not laugh that much either? i expected a little more flair. the jokes were really corny, and some things just didn't seem right. i guess i'm just critical. as a huge 80s movie watcher, I at least hoped it would compare to some degree. it just seemed like they were trying too hard to mimic 80s (just didn't pull it off). what did you think? am i crazy? :(
Subject: Re: That 80's show... SUX or NO
I just watched the first segment, and am not impressed. I hope it gets better, but don't have much hope. :(
edited to add:
Ok, I am back, not impressed. If it stays like that, it won't last. Too disjointed....didn't feel like it had a story at all. :(
Subject: Re: That 80's show... SUX or NO
i did not expect that much for a pilot. i am sure the episodes will get better if they are given a chance. i hope this is not one of those shows they cancel at the end of the year.
that 70's show is better than this, but this show will have a chance (i hope).

TOTALLY VOMITROCIOUS!
Subject: Re: That 80's show... SUX or NO
Well, I was sooooo disappointed that I forgot to watch it last night, but after reading the "reviews" here, I don't feel so bad! I will have to try for next week though :D
Subject: Re: That 80's show... SUX or NO
I'm trying to stay objective mainly because it is just the first episode. I'll let you know what I Really think next week. ;)
Subject: Re: That 80's show... SUX or NO
Well I loved it!!!
Psych!
The cast is rather atrocious (I can't stand the guy that plays the dad). Hopefully (wishful thinking?) it'll get better.

:-/ I was sooooo looking forward to this show and I, too, was disappointed with last night's premiere. I thought maybe it was just a matter of perspective. You know - in 1984 I was a Grade 9, all-Canadian girl who loved arena-concerts and big hair. The show just didn't seem to capture what I remember (could be selective memory, too I guess). But, I'm going to remain optimistic and keep watching with the hope that it'll improve.
Subject: Re: That 80's show... SUX or NO
pilot episodes are always weak, fact of life.. I got the M*A*S*H TV show season 1 on DVD this week.. the first episode was not what I call a classic episode.
however, it did seem that the jokes were a little too corny, very forced..
anyone figure out the year?
Black Flag poster in the alley had the year 1984 on it, and the main character (the frustrated song writer) mentioned having seen the Sex Pistols "six years ago" which I think nails it down to 1984 pretty good.. I was out of blank tapes, so I didn't get to tape it and figure out how many things came out after the approximate date..
favorite character has to be the record store owner, the best jokes were about the sixties come to think of it.. and considering the 80s did focus on 60s nostalgia for a bit, it's at least not a stretch for the character to be on the show..
I'm willing to give it a chance, but I think it has light years to go before it matches the character development of "That 70s Show", and it certainly doesn't measure up to other shows I watch either.. why they bury Titus at 9:30 and push this show heavily, I'll never know..
Subject: Re: That 80's show... SUX or NO
I agree, Chucky, the first seasons of most shows aren't too great. I didn't care much for "That '70s Show" in the first season either, with corny plots involving disco, Pong, and streaking. "That '80s Show" is good, but it will need time to really develop.

According to the Dish Network guide, the year was 1984. I wasn't very impressed with the show, either. I don't think I laughed once. Let's just hope that it will get better as it goes on (unless they decide to cancel it).

well if the show was being aired in the 80s on Fox, it would run for three or four seasons before that would happen (just think Herman's Head, which I kinda liked).. nowadays, if a show doesn't make it on Fox, it gets squished pretty quick (witness the Tick). Though considering that they're pretty happy about "That 70s Show" performance, and the fact that it comes from the same people, they'll probably be willing to let it ride awhile (like they did with Chris Carter's Millenium) of course when Chris Carter produced a second bomb after Millenium, they canceled it pretty quick, so they don't mess around for long with producers.
Fox used to be pretty cutting edge, and show stuff the other networks wouldn't even dream of running, but lately they same to follow their lead (especially with the large volume of crappy reality TV stuff, Tempation Island and it's ilk)... That 80s's Show doesn't really look like it's going to do anything new, just new characters in a different location in a different time, same formula.. the same bold move they made by making shorter Ally McBeals (remember that grand experiment? cut existing shows to just the plot points involving Ally?)
Subject: Re: That 80's show... SUX or NO
They poked fun at the 80's! I guess it IS a comedy show. :-/
I can't resist!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There's a couple of (possibly) controversial points, but I have to get them out of my system...
1) The show had to be set with a divorced dad right off the bat. They seemed to make too big of a point of it, IMO.
2) Bi-sexuality wasn't one of the main issues of the 80's as I remember them. I believe throwing that into the show, especially in their first episode, especially involving one of the main characters, was unnecessary. It certainly wasn't that big of an issue to bring on as a main topic in the first episode of "That 80's Show".
The reason that was thrown into the show, In My Honest Opinion, was to get ratings. In todays society it's not only socially acceptable but also a very popular TV theme. Just look at shows like "Xena - Warrior Princess" and "Buffy The Vampire Slayer". Now, Canada is opening their "liscensed" Gay network to which I don't know the name to. No doubt the U.S. will come up with their own version.
Many people will find that particular theme and perhaps the show itself ("That 80's Show") objectionable for the younger viewers, I'm sure.
Just to note: I'm not against people's preferred sexuality - To each their own.
Anyway, they could have done so much better, so much more with "That 80's Show"!
The club scenes, especially the one at the very beginning, were cheesy beyong anything I'd ever seen in any B-movie. The only character of any reedeming value was the record shop manager, who had a "Rosanne" type of personality. Too bad they made her make one too many references to the 60's. It was overdone.
Ok. Bad writing will destroy this show real quick before it even takes off. If the next episode isn't any better, I don't think we'll see this show around for long. Networks have a way of axing shows at the drop of a hat when the ratings reflect poor numbers.
I do hope it's improved. If there's going to be a show out there reflecting our awesome decade, I want it to be accurate and well written. There's plenty of comedy potential without desecrating our good memories of the time.
I will add that I do like "That 70's Show". So, I take that as my not being too anal about my critique of "That 80's Show".
Subject: Re: That 80's show... SUX or NO
there is one show that at least has done decent 80s flashbacks, which is the show currently following "That 80s Show" and that would be "Grounded For Life".. I was little disappointed that the episode they ran last night didn't feature any flashbacks, seems like it would have been a perfect excuse to do it.. and Titus a few weeks ago did one as well..
I think the programming directories at Fox should have done a much better job, they could have had an entire 80s night (I don't know about Bernie Mac, it runs against Drew Carey, and I like that show still.. hey they played "Girlfriend in a Coma" as the theme one week, gotta love that)...
Subject: Re: That 80's show... SUX or NO
I think it has potential. Like a few of you pointed out, pilot episodes are never that great. It is the first one so I will watch it a few more times before I judge it.
Subject: Re: That 80's show... SUX or NO
If you watched the first of the show you saw that it said "Berlin Club" 1984
Subject: Re: That 80's show... SUX or NO
Just found this site...I've added it to my favorites...As a big 80's fan that I am...I hated the show. It was too cliche, the characters were terrible, I disliked them all...they were dressed like they were trying to put on a highschool play that takes place in the 80's...couldn't they have done a little more research? Nobody did their hair like that chick's back then either...it was more round...liberty spikes, and punks didnt wear new leather jackets...sorry the show just aggravated me a lot, i was very affended by the whole thing :/
But, wonderful site...I love the 80's yay.

Subject: Re: That 80's show... SUX or NO
Ok,I've seen this come up in other threads to but (forgive my ignorance)what the hell is That 80's show????? Is it a sitcom?? It's obviously something about the 80's right? At first I thought it was like something we had over here called 'I love the 80's' where they did a different year each week. Confused ???

"That 80's Show" is, in fact, a sitcom. It made its series premiere on Wednesday night. Basically, the premise is following a family (sister and brother, as well as their divorced Dad) and their friends and co-workers as they go about their lives in the 80's ('84, I believe it is currently on the show).
There is also "That 70's Show" which... well, umm... now that I think of it, is about a family (sister and brother; but their parents aren't divorced) and their friends and co-workers as they go about their lives in the 70's.
Subject: Re: That 80's show... SUX or NO
Thanks! Now I understand.I think I may have seen an episode of that 70's show though I didn't realise that was what it was called !
Subject: Re: That 80's show... SUX or NO
It wasn't great or anything, but it wasn't bad. A decent way to spend 30 minutes. But that laugh track was overdone to annoyance.

yeah, watching it, I did have to say that I found the laugh track really annoying.. I usually don't notice them, but that one seemed a little over the top.. I always wonder if they're just using the same laugh track from like 50 years ago.. lots of dead people's laughter ("Dead People's Laughter", sounds like a cool goth band name).
Subject: Re: That 80's show... SUX or NO
I haven't talked to anyone other than my roommate who has given the first show a good review...nonetheless, I thought a lot of the jokes/gags were funny. I loved the scene where the kids did shots to Dynasty. The show obviously needs to *not* rely on jokes about the decade, it must develop good/funny characters. But I've seen pilots that developed into successful series that were worse than what I saw last night.
Subject: Re: That 80's show... SUX or NO
It was ok. The laugh track was indeed overdone though. I will have to wait to pass judgement. I like "that 70's show" but if I remember correctly, the pilot episode did not impress me either. You never know though. I did like the Pat Benatar video and the Dynasty scene.
Subject: Re: That 80's show... SUX or NO
i know i was only 14 in 1984 but i don't recall coolers being around then. am i wrong? here where i live, the first coolers were big 2 liters called "california coolers" and then bartles and james...but those coolers looked like seagrams...am i wrong?
other than that and the tweed sports jacket that the father wears i am giving the show a chance
Subject: Re: That 80's show... SUX or NO
??? LIKE TOTALLY BUMMED, YA KNOW!! REALLY LIKE SUCKS!
Subject: Re: That 80's show... SUX or NO
I really haven't watched a lot of it past the first few episodes. When I saw the Valentine's Day one for the second time, I figured they were lacking for episodes. As such, I'm not even sure when it's on anymore. I will be watching the episode with John Taylor in it though...

Subject: Re: That 80's show... SUX or NO
The John Taylor episode might very well be the only episode of "That '80s Show" that I can actually sit through for more than five minutes.
Subject: Re: That 80's show... SUX or NO
Although it started of VERY badly...I think it's getting better each week.....I still like That 70's Show Much more though :)
Subject: Re: That 80's show... SUX or NO
Yeah, It was ok but it could be alot better then it is. Maybe that's why I always forget that it's on. ::)
Subject: Re: That 80's show... SUX or NO
:P Totally Bogus. But hopefully it will get better.

I haven't seen it yet, but from what I've heard, I haven't missed much. When does it come on? Which network carries it? I'm too lazy to go to tvguide.com to check on showtimes.

IMO, they just keep getting better :D Tonights episode was very good ;)
Subject: Re: That 80's show... SUX or NO
I have a tape in the VCR in my bedroom which is set to record That 80's Show weekly. As such, I have every episode that has aired. The tape is yet to be watched... but maybe someday I'll feel like watching the entire season. ;D
Subject: Re: That 80's show... SUX or NO
Last night's episode started off really strong, in my opinion....then seemed to go downhill from there. The car banter on the way to Star Search was lame. Then Katie's rationalizing for not wanting to go ahead with the performance "I just wanted to know that you loved me enough to do this..." was anticlimactic. Big buildup, lame letdown.
The storythread re: Margaret getting Pat Nebatar and her husband together was clever, though...
