Subject: Saturday morning cartoons

Saturday morning cartoons in the 80's.  THE BEST!  The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Show.  Spider Man and his Amazing Friends.  SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK!!  Hours and hours of cartoons.

I wouldn't give you 2 cents for the crap on today.  Kids just don't know what they missed.  Oh if I had a VCR back then...  ;)   But I blame the tv stations.  Cartoon Network rules but it just isn't the same.

I vaguely remember something a few years back about network television being required to spend a percentage of all scheduled "children's programming" on "educational" shows.  I didn't pay much attention at the time, as I didn't have either a child or a tv at the time.

It didn't really affect PBS, because almost all of their daytime shows are educational, and a good percentage of the night shows too.  I remember "Weird Al" Yancovic in an interview mentioning something about his Saturday morning show not being renewed because of this rule.

I wonder how Cartoon Network gets around this? Do they list themselves as a "nostalgia" network? And if so, how do they explain their newer shows being run in the daytime?

I loved the NBC shows before Saved By The Bell came along and wiped out their lineup. Kidd Video, Galaxy High, Hulk Hogan's Rock N' Wrestling, Lazer Tag Academy, and a lot more.

BTW, the educational rule has always been around, that's why there was always the educational (Knowing is half the battle!) scene at the end of G.I. Joe and other shows.

I love Captain Caveman.  What about the weekend specials?  Anyone remember them?  Actually, I just love the old cartoons.  Boomerang is the network to watch on Saturdays when they do flashbacks to 1971 etc.  I can watch Speedbuggy, Jabber Jaw, Josie and the Pussycats (not from outerspace, though), Scooby Doo, Yogi Bear...I could name tons.  Luckily I have a 4 year old so I still have an excuse to watch cartoons.  I don't know what I will say when she grows up.

8) I'm 34 and I still watch cartoons.  It's my escape from the world telling me that I have to take everything so seriously.

Good call guys on the Cpt. Caveman and Scooby Doo.
Tigger will always be my favorite character of all times.

I grew up near the Chicago area and I used to watch a show called "Gigglesnort Hotel". I am curious if anyone has ever heard of it. It was a very different kids show. Bizarre, very bizarre.

Yep - "Star Blazers" is the correct name. It's the English-language edit of the Japanese anime series "Space Battleship Yamato".

I watch these too, when I have time. And you don't need an excuse to watch them, either!  ;)

I was a big-time Smurf-aholic. I made my parents take me to Hardees every weekend to get a new Smurfs collectors glass. I loved the show so much that I bought a Smurfs lunch box in 6th grade and I didn't realize that nobody thought it was cool for a guy to have a Smurfs lunch box in 6th grade. I got ridiculed heavily and I went home and scraped the sticker off the lunchbox as best I could. Oh well, I'm still a "closet Smurf fan". Except for the last episodes when they started bringing in the "smurf brats" and those guys from the palace. I dont remember their names. I liked most of the cartoons that were based on video games like Pac Man and Frogger, and Rubik. I vaguely remember Wonder Bug and Dr Shrinker. But I guess that is more 70'ish. My favorite non-cartoon was Land of the Lost. Me and my brother also used to wake up before dawn to watch Ultra Man (another non-cartoon, foreign I believe).
Does anybody remember Space Giants? That was a cool show.

The only ones I really remember are the Smurfs.  I feel so ashamed admitting that I only remember one cartoon, but in my defnese, I DID tend to sleep late and then head right outside...

Anybody out there remember Astroboy?
I grew up in the days of Bugs Bunny, Rocky & Bullwinkle, Space Ghost, Underdog and Johnny Quest.
Then again a lot of these cartoons you can still see today. However, when I grew up they still had Speedy Gonzales on the Bugs Bunny cartoons.
I miss Speedy and his buddy Slopoke Rodriquez. :'(

This wasn't a cartoon, but I always loved Kids, Inc.  I wanted to be on the show, but I couldn't sing...

I don't know if this was late 70's or early 80's, but does anyone remember the New Zoo Revue with the singing animals?

I remember the name, it sounds very familiar and I know I watched it but remember absolutely nothing about the actual show.
And I remember the New Zoo Review, I think I had seen it on tv as recently as 5 years ago. I don't know if they were just re-running old episodes or if they had made a new version but I remember flipping through channels and coming across it. I just about fell out of my chair!

I agree with you there, I still love cartoons! I wish I could see Laugholympics again, remember that one? There were three teams and the Really Rottens was one team. I watch the toons with my kids now as much as I watched as a child. My favorite one is Spongebob. My kids love Arthur and Dragontales best. I like the Cartoon network's Johnny Bravo too. ;D

I'm not from Illinois but I remember "Gigglesnort Hotel". It must have played on WGN which was carried by my local cable company.

I wish there was a box-set of all of their songs. That would be great!
Columbia House now has "Fat Albert" in their list of TV shows you can get different episodes of per month.
