Subject: Favorite Arcade & Video Games
I'm sure his topic has been done before but I'll give it a shot. My favorite game of all time was "I ROBOT" -- one of the first truly 3D arcade games. It seemed to have endless levels and it even had a doodle mode for de-stressing. http://www.mameworld.net/shrines/irobot/irobot.html

Hi everyone! I'm looking for (and trying to remember the title of) a game from either the 80s or very early 90s. It was this computer game with a guy in a castle. The backdrop was Dark grey stones outlined in black, w/ brown vertical support beams. Among other things I can't really remember, you had to dodge purple slime (ooze) and dripping water. That's all I remember. (Very helpful, huh.) If anyone has ANY ideas, please post here or email me. I'd appreciate it very much! :) Thanks again!

I think the game you mean is Castlevania but I could be wrong.
Galaga, Definitely !!
Crazy Climber
Defender
Return of the Jedi
PHOENIX !!!!!
Joust
Ikari Bros
Vanguard
Moon Patrol
Anyone remember the old Tri-Star (I think) system? It was trianlge shaped, had a pistol, a steering wheel, and pong controllers. Thank God you can still find ROMs. I'm up to 600 now. Email requests filled here ! (MAME 32 v1.6)

Over here in England, Pole Position was voted something like the seventh best game of the last century. Having played it so many times, I have to agree with a) the good reception it got when it was released (I wasn't even born when it was released - 1982 - but I've got a copy of it) and b) the fact that it has clearly remained so popular for so many years.
Subject: Re: Favorite Arcade & Video Games
I had three favorites, but for the life of me, I cannot remember their real names. Sometimes it was the lighting in a particular arcade, other times it was just the fun of being with friends, but we always gave the games different names to describe what they meant to us. I'll describe them, so if anyone can help with the real names I'd really appreciate it.
Here goes:
1) We called it Dungeons & Dragons, but that was not it's name. Up to four players at one time on screen, new players could join in anytime. You were dictated a color by which set of controls you used, but you could choose to be a Valkyrie, an Elf, a Warrior, (or barbarian) or a Sorcerer. You had to get through the maze, killing all the monsters as you went, and pick up treasure, magic artifacts and food. In the early levels you got a warning "don't shoot the food!" if you accidentally destroyed it.
2) We called this the MinMay game because one of the characters looked like MinMay from Robotech. Again, up to four people could play at the same time. You had to shoot these insect-looking things, find a key, and use the key to get to the next level. The door was always guarded by a really large insect-thing called the "boss". Every level started out with a voice shouting "Destroy The Boss!"
3) I've played this one recently on-line and I think it's called Rolling Thunder. You are a secret-agent/spy and you have to shoot the enemy agents. Every so often there is a door where you can go in to get more ammo, or larger-caliber firearms. In the second or third level, you are jumping into and out of tire stacks.
Any one else remember these? I'd like to try to find them sometime, but without the right name I know I won't get anywhere.
P.S. I also liked Rampage! We called the characters Godzilla and King Kong. There was a third giant monster but I can'r remember what it was.

Donkey Kong/Jr./3
Punch-Out!!!
Pole Position I & II
Galaga
Tapper (mmm...beer...)
Centipede
Tempest
Space Ace
TRON

Xevious
Mouse Trap (saw a guy get a national high score on that one in '83)
720 degrees (the skateboard game)
Dig Dug
Kangaroo

I can't remember the name either, but that was hilarious! When you *did* accidentally shoot a food block, the game complained in a slightly insulted voice - "You shot a food!" ;D

Oh yes,I most definitely remember Rolling Thunder video game.every time you'd get it,your character would yell"AUGHHH,AUGHHH".Or was it the enemies that made that sound? On some occasions,it got stupid and goofy but a fantastic game I played during the 80's.And an olympic game I played as well.

I really miss those days of scrounging for quarters.
1. GORF
2. DEFENDER
3. VENTURE
4. BATTLEZONE
5. TRON
Please help me remember this game:
It was a space game back in 1983-84. This big alien head would come on the screen and say "prepare for battle". When you finished a level you could choose different parts to add on to your spaceship. I cant really remember much more and I cant find anyone who remembers it. AAAAAh! I played it all summer at my Grandparents in NM. The game never showed up down here in Alabama.
Subject: Re: Favorite Arcade & Video Games
I liked Paperboy and Centipede at the arcade. Those were really the only ones I played until we got an Intellivision at home. Then I liked a couple of games that were called Snafu and Burgertime. I'm not sure if those were all over video games or just Intellievision games. I wasn't a big video game nut.
But boy, the arcade in town (we only had one that lasted for any amount of time) was the only place to be on the weekends! Course, now that arcade is an H&R Block... ::) Talk about aging a person!!!! ;D

Wasn't that SINISTAR?

Nope....not sinistar, but I do like that game. The big 'sinistar-head' would chase you in space and kill you unless you had enough little bombs you mined from the asteroids. I had forgotten all about that game..

I love video games and Im happy to say that between me and my bro we have an NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, Playstation, N64, and an X-Box with tons of cartridges and we keep buying them for all systems. I put together an Atari system over a year ago with several peripherals and all my favorite games from my youth. I sold later on Ebay for $120.00 so I could buy MIB Woody and Buzz Lightyear on Ebay for my two daughters. I also had a Sega Master System back in the days when it first came out. Now I frequent www.smspower.speedhost.com for my SMS emulation needs. I also have hundreds of roms for Atari, Sega, and Nintendo systems. And I absolutely love MAME.
Now that I rambled, my favorites from the 80's were Tunnel Runner, Freeway, Infiltrate, Smurfs, among others for Atari.
Pic Axe Pete for Odyssey 2. (Too bad there is only one emulator and I cant run it on my pc.)
Gradius, Galaga, Scramble, Star Wars, Tron, Phoenix, Gorf, Yier of Kung Fu, and Frontline for Arcade.
I could go on and on about my favorite NES, SNES, Genesis, an SMS games but it would take too much space. By the way, Halo and John Madden football for X-Box are awesome games of the new stuff.
David.

Subject: Re: Favorite Arcade & Video Games
I remember playing Popeye in 1985 or 1986.
That was such a fun especially when I had Popeye eat the spinach and catching all the hearts at the same time and after that he'd punch Brutus away like a "WHOOOSH".remember that game??
Subject: Re: Favorite Arcade & Video Games
The Bluth games were good (Dragons Lair and Space Ace).
I loved Space Harrier because if you got through all 17 levels (finished the game) then it gave you another credit to play again with whatever lives you have left from the previous game. I also liked that fact that many versions of this game were "sit down" in a moving box.
Another game I liked was Mat Mania (wrestling). This was one game where I could play pretty much forever on a quarter (think the longest I played it on a single quarter was about 3 hours...) This was about the time I started getting in wrestling as well, so it was all good.
My favorite game though was called Cobra Command. It had really nice graphics (was built on a laser disc like Space Ace and Dragon's lair). You basically piloted a attack helicopter from the cockpit viewpoint and you would fly through numerous scenarios including New York, Easter Island, ice caves, desert, up a river, in the ocean (against destroyers/cruisers), and lots of other places.

I remember it JO. My buddy had it on his Coleco.
In an earlier post you mentioned an olympic game. Was it Track and Field? That game was cool. I preferred the buttons to the trackball for that one.
Anyone remember the videogame game show on TBS - Starcade? Parent & child teams would compete on the games to win prizes...
Subject: Re: Favorite Arcade & Video Games
I remember Starcade. I used to love that show. I also liked that show that was on Fox in the late 80's/early 90's. I dont remember the name exactly but it had this guy named Johnny Arcade on it. Kids would play nintendo games and the high scorer at the end would get to run through this area grabbing all the nintendo carts he or she could manage to carry or stick to their clothes. The carts had velcro on them or something. Then later Nickelodeon had a video game show and I believe they used mostly 16-bit system games.
I cant believe I forgot to mention Track n Field and Mat Mania earlier. Those are two games I play alot whenever I use my MAME emulator. We used to have this arcade in town that was also an ice cream parlor back in the 80's. That was when they had all these weird and neat flavors like Smurf and Superman. I miss those days.
Subject: Re: Favorite Arcade & Video Games
My favorite games included Frogger, Space Invaders, Millipede, and Galaga. :D
Subject: Re: Favorite Arcade & Video Games
My favorite arcade game was without a doubt Pac-Man. In fact, one of the first things I ever did when I first got online years ago was look for a way to play Pac-Man on my computer. That's how I found MAME. I still play it weekly (you'd think I'd be getting good at it by now, too. But no, I suck).
After Pac-Man would have to com Afterburner II. I loved that game, in the sit down form that actually swiveled up and down as you flew your fighter.
I also loved Ikari Warriors.
And Star Wars.
And Operation Wolf...
Subject: Re: Favorite Arcade & Video Games

My fave's were:
Pac-Man
Galaga (sp?)
Space Invaders
Donkey Kong
Tetris
centipede
and Tomb Raider (I know this one didn't come out in the 80's ::)) but I was really addicted to this game for a while
Subject: Re: Favorite Arcade & Video Games
My favorites were definitely PacMan, Ms. PacMan and the original Mario Brothers (where Mario & Luigi could team up or compete against each other).
But since we're on the topic, does anyone remember that arcade game where this guy is climbing a high-rise and he scoots from window to window while dodging pigeon poo? I remember playing that game but can't remember the name of it and everyone I ask thinks I'm making it up!
Also, did anyone ever play Journey on Coleco? I think you had to rescue the band members of Journey before they got abducted by a UFO or something. I remember there was a Journey song playing during the game. No one remembers this one either!

Subject: Re: Favorite Arcade & Video Games
I haven't, but as far as I can tell, you run the emulator program on your computer.
Then you find a file which is the image of the Read-Only-Memory (ROM) used to store the original game you want to play.
I presume the emulator will have some sort of option to "load" the rom file - and away you go! ;D

I remember one arcade game that was pretty cool which was about a tank and there were 2 joysticks, if you pulled the joystick(s) apart the tank would then elevate the gun to mimic an artillery piece! It also had some neet graphic capabilities that kinda resembled system seven mode for the SNES (spin the whole screen around hardware wise and not software) you fought on asteroid like "Islands", after completeing one you would hit the runway and "Take off" to the next one.. Anyone remember the name of this arcade game?

they even had a pitfall arcade game (and i don't mean the one for the atari 2600)
it was called pitfall II and it was in arcades! it rocked, had kickass graphics, compare to the atari 2600, though i liked that game too
the sequel to pitfall sucked...so did most of the atari games...those crap graphics
but some were fun
the atari 2600 pac man sucked!

OOOOOh youre thinking of "Dragons Lair" a revolutionary game ahead of its time. it was the first time laser disc was used in a game's format and it was also probabally oneof the first games to use cinematics! Great call.

Pac Man, of course. And then a later one... I can't remember the name of it, but it featured Dirk the Daring. Dragon Quest, maybe? ???

I don't can't remember these, but i will ask my husband later. He loves robotech, have got many full episodes from servers online. He might know.
I rarely played arcade machines or pinball in Brazil, but i had an atari, later i had an msx (gradiente brazilian, i still have it!), and then amiga. My husband had a hitbit and a commodore64, pluss an amiga that we still have here, 6 years ago he used his amiga to going on mirc and so on...
the greatest thing are all these emulators we can find online!

I had three favorites, but for the life of me, I cannot remember their real names. I'll describe them, so if anyone can help with the real names I'd really appreciate it.
2) We called this the MinMay game because one of the characters looked like MinMay from Robotech. Again, up to four people could play at the same time. You had to shoot these insect-looking things, find a key, and use the key to get to the next level. The door was always guarded by a really large insect-thing called the "boss". Every level started out with a voice shouting "Destroy The Boss!"End Quote

wow, why are you selling those?!!! i got so mad when my mom throwed away my atari. Her words "it was taking up space, didn't work anymore either". And i was like "but mom, is vintage"!!!
My plan is to get an atari videogame and an atari computer (it was great to make music, right?), first i need to rob a bank.

I just listed 30 Atari Cartridges on ebay....LOL

I'm sure his topic has been done before but I'll give it a shot. My favorite game of all time was "I ROBOT" -- one of the first truly 3D arcade games. It seemed to have endless levels and it even had a doodle mode for de-stressing. http://www.mameworld.net/shrines/irobot/irobot.html
