Subject: Icky pooo!!

Written By: Rapture on 01/21/02 at 06:59 a.m.

Growing up in the 80's there was always that one vegetable your parents forced you eat that made you gag!   :P

Whenever my mom cooked brussels sprouts I knew I was going to spend 2 hours staring at my plate. My parents would say,  "Your are not getting away from the table until you eat all your vegetables"   :o

Strange, I like brussels sprouts now. ;)

What made you go, "Icky Poo" ?

I LOVE LIMA BEANS!  YUMMY!
My parents never forced us to eat anything.  They did encourage us to try new things but never forced us.

Any vegetable my mother cooked.  It always came out soggy, overcooked and gray. :-X :-X  Even the corn was soggy. :P

On the other hand, if dad was doing the cooking, I'd eat anything but spinach, broccoli, and brussels sprouts (those were the ones dad hated too!  ;D )

Cauliflower... I threw it up once and was never forced to eat it again.  I didn't care for lima beans, zucchini, or brussel sprouts either, though I never had that bad of a reaction with them.

My parents never forced me to eat anything, although they did encourage me, and even tried bribery, although that rarely worked.

I hate(d) squash, spinach, tomatoes, turnips and okra... anything else I'm fine with. ;)

My parents never forced me either......I refused to eat squash, okra, eggplant, or cauliflower (all of which I eventually tried as an adult and now eat regularly)

We either don't have them in England ( which i doubt), or its an Americanism for something which we call something else! It been bugging me ever since i heard them mentioned on some American tv show ages ago!

Kinda, sorta OT but do you make your kids eat food they don't like/want? ???

First, let me say that I totally disagree with this practice.  It doesn't do anything but create a miserable dining experience for everyone at the table.  To me it is just some power trip for the parents.  "Eat this or else!"  Or else what? :P  Gimme a break - choose your battles, right?  There are worse things than not eating your okra or liver...

Don't worry - I won't flame you if you inflict this horrible zealous act on your kid.  :-X Just curious to know if people ended up doing the same thing or opposite than their parents did.

I never forced my kids to eat anything they didn't like. And they always tried something new and if they didn't like then they never touched it again. I totally agree with you cs that it just makes for a horrid dining experience. And FYI my parent's never forced anything on us either...dinner at our house was an experience for my mom...5 kids and we all disliked different things and she always tried to accommodate us...musta been rough on her...what a trooper she is :D

Well, my daughter won't be a year old for a few more days, but I've never forced my son to eat anything. I've had him try different things, but if he didn't like it he didn't have to eat it. I tend to agree with you that it's sort of cruel, and there are other things more important.

Gosh no.  Just because you eat veggie's doesn't mean that you're not getting all you need.  My son's diet consists mostly of noodles or pasta of some kind, very little meat - he doesn't like red meat, which amazes me since we grew up on it!.  He takes a daily kids vitamin (like Flinstones or Bugs Bunny) and is a healthy kid.  He has only been sick once, ever and is in the 95th percentile!
I always offer whatever I make to him and once even got him to try a green bean.  He really just licked it but hey, that's a start!  My kids like apples, corn, potatoes, and my daughter likes raw cauliflower (UGH!).  So it's a give and take really.
The doctor said that it wasn't a good idea to push the food issue.  If the kids just play around with their food thinking they can just eat a bunch of snacks later, all I have to say is "There's no snacks tonight".  That gets them eating something and they don't eat a bunch of crap later.
I guess I'd rather have a peaceful evening than be the bad guy every night.  I know as they get older their tastes will change.  Until then I will make and offer and hope they give it a try.

Boy, what a list I have!!  I will eat celery, carrots, and green bell peppers as long as they're not cooked.  Tomatoes can't be cooked, either, unless they're pureed for spaghetti sauce.  I can't stand spinach or brussel sprouts!

I don't force my son to eat anything, but I ask him to try one bite before saying he doesn't like it.  If he doesn't like it, fine, that's why I buy peanut butter and jelly.  lol

My friend's two kids refuse to try anything new.  They are so hard to feed!!  I dread every time I have to babysit!  How can you like macaroni and cheese, but only if it's not shell noodles?  Hate spaghetti-o's until you find out it's the kind your mom sent for you to eat?  They drive me nuts....I'm tempted to let them starve..... ::)

I used to loathe brussel sprouts (and actually broke a pane of glass in our lounge french door trying to discreetly ditch one outside when Mum went into the kitchen...needlesstosay, the shite hit the fan that day)...LOL!
I really like brussel sprouts nowdays, but all that talk of OKRA has given me the heebie-jeebies...

As for other vegies, I used to only eat the stalks of broccoli and cauli as a kid...then I only ate the flowering head...then i couldn't remember which, and my Mum busted me and made me eat them all.

I think Okra is the only outstanding veg from my youth that i still cant stomach... I also hate capers tho'!

So much to say...

First, I don't hink it's cruel to be made to eat a few bites of food put in front of you . Especially, when it was put there by hard work.  If my parents didn't make us eat our vegetables I doubt I would ever have. :P

It's a disgrace that kids nowadays can dictate to parents what they will eat!  MY niece and nephew eat what is put in front of them of they go to bed hungry. Kids will not starve to death. ;)  When it comes to vegetables, we expect them to try them...maybe have a bite or two. They are not gonna die if they have to eat 4 green beans. (IMHO)  :)

I love lima beans! I even eat them sometimes by themselves. ;)

I hate tomatoes unless they are cooked in something.

80sTrivia, collard/mixed greens and cabbage are some of the best grub! ;)   My mom's husband can make some killer fried cabbage and noodles! :)  He also makes good zucchinni and fried green tomatoes!

Kat, soggy vegatables are sooo nasty! :P LOL

aphasia2000, "but all that talk of OKRA has given me the heebie-jeebies..."--ROTFLMAO!!

I agree, when my daughter doesn't eat she goes to bed without anything else.  She eats plenty at the babysitters so I don't worry about her going hungry.  She used to love green beans (especially in the green bean casserole) but now the only vegetable I can get her to eat are those baby carrots you buy in the store.  She won't eat a regular one, they have to come out of the bag.  I buy alot of those, she also likes apples and I give her vitamins.  She is incredibly healthy.

And, thank you, I have always felt that way about Okra.

No, it isn't cruel to make them taste it to see if they like it. But I'm not going to make mine eat something he doesn't like. He likes most veggies - carrots, corn, spinach, oddly enough, beans and the like - so he gets enough nutrition from them. I just don't see it as being necessary to make him eat the few that he doesn't like, especially when I wasn't made to do it, and I didn't stop growing until I was almost six and a half feet tall.  ;)

A lot of people just can't cook, IMHO. I can't always eat vegetables or anything else they cook.

I love lima beans too, (butterbeans in the South). I also love fried/boiled okra and most other vegetables, cooked or raw.

I also love venison (deer meat), but don't care for rabbit, dove, or most other game.

However, I can't stand fried green tomatoes, or raw red tomatoes, those are too soggy. I never got into liking potato salad either! :(

I also have a 6-year-old daughter and I know that if I left it up to her she would totally live on candy (and any other heavily-sugared foods)!  She is a skinny little girl (though tall for her age) and I have worried about whether or not she is getting the nutrition she needs.  She seems to accept raw vegetables (green beans, red bell peppers and snow peas, especially) better than those that are cooked.  It will be interesting to see which foods become her favorites as she grows older.

As for me, I've always hated eggplant...although I don't recall my parents ever trying to force me to eat it.  They did encourage me to eat my vegetables by saying that I wouldn't get any dessert if I didn't finish what was on my plate (essentially bribery, as WL was talking about)!  LOL!   ;D

I must admit - I am extremely greatful to my mum for never forcing me to eat something after I had stated "Ewwwww mum it smells disgusting !".  So luckily for me eggs, seafood, colliflower, brussel sprouts and pumpkin were never forced on me.

Having said that - I grew up thinking all mothers leapt out of the car after braking suddenly, sped into the bush, and came out carrying a snake or goanna, which she would later cook in coals wherever we ended up parking that night.  Seriously - I thought my friends were wierd cos they had only ever eaten chicken out of an oven !  I was 6 before I ever entered an actual house !

At junior school they used to make us sit until our plate was empty at dinner time until tthey realised some of the kids were doing it deliberatly to get out of afternoon lessons ! My Mum used to have battles with me about food I was and still am a very picky eater.Even she admits with hindsight it was not the right way to go about it as there are some foods I can't even bear to try now cos she made me sit  with them until I was near hysterical.

Lettuce
Tomato
Zucchini
Most seafood (love shrimp, scallops, and sushi!  YUM! :D )
Collards (excellent with hot pepper vinegar)

I still won't eat the following:

Eggplant
Creamed or Cooked Spinach (I like the raw stuff in salad)
Broccoli by itself
Cauliflower by itself
Cucumbers
Pickles
turnips
radishes
potato salad
mayonnaise (yuk!)  :-X
Sour cream (unless I don't know it's in there)

Alright, I think I've got all that... so if any of you come here for dinner, I won't be feeding you anything you don't like!

There isn't a single food I can think of that I won't eat; but since I do my own cooking, there are a few I would never bother making because I don't particularly enjoy them.  No vegetables I don't like, though.

I prefer to cater to whomever I'm cooking for, and I'll just eat whatever they want.

Then you're a better person than I am. Because I would invite people to dinner, then cook anything they don't like and say, "This isn't a Burger King" or not cook anything and reply, "You will have nothing and like it".(from "Caddyshack") :D ;D

My mom had a "Don't say you don't like it until you've tried it" policy.  I've carried that on to my kids.

I'm not much of a veggie eater.  I love corn, most any kind of bean, UNCOOKED carrots, and lettuce.  That's about it.  Onions make me gag if I bite into one.  The only way I would eat peas is covered in cheese.  Keep broccoli, spinach, califlower, etc, away from me!  :P

The only time we MAKE our kids eat is when they say the don't like something  and we know they do.  They like spaghetti, but the SAME sauce with different pasta suddenly tastes gross.  Yeah right.  ::)
